Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 143, Issue 99

2017-12-29 Thread andrew rothweiler via CnC-List
Hello Tim,
Here is a follow up question regarding the Monte Carlo scenarios- is the Monte
Carlo calculation reset and/or updated periodically (annually?)  to incorporate
actual return results of prior years?  In other words, the scenario generates
random annual return projections going forward, but are actual known past
return numbers inserted for the random number that was used in the prior year?
So in 2016, the scenario had any number of random return possibilities for the
year 2017.  For 2018 going forward, is the actual return number for 2017 (and
all prior years for that matter) programmed/updated  into the calculation for
future years?
Many thanks,
Andy Rothweiler

Stus-List 1974 C 30-1 keel

2015-12-15 Thread andrew rothweiler via CnC-List
Looking at a '74 30-1 for sale, and have a question about the keel depth. The
ad says the keel is 4'7".Ads for other  30-1s say the keel is 5'.Sailboat data
says the keel is 5' , but the profile drawing of the boat on the site shows a
dotted line along the keel that looks like it is showing an alternate shoal
keel.
Can someone confirm there were two keel options on the 1974 30-1?  What are the
accurate keel depths?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Stus-List questions from potential buyer

2015-01-13 Thread andrew rothweiler via CnC-List
Hello all,
I've found a mid 70s CC 33-1 that I'm interested in buying. One thing the
survey indicated was elevated moisture levels, into the yellow on the meter, in
the bottom. The owner had the bottom epoxy barrier coated about 8 years ago,
and the bottom paint was new last year. There were no blisters present at the
survey, and the owner has said there have never been any- he has owned the boat
for 30+ years. The boat has been on the Great Lakes from new, and based on the
condition of the boat, especially compared to all the boats I have looked at,
I would say the boat has had an attentive, conscientious owner.

My question is whether elevated moisture in several areas of the bottom of a
solid fiberglass hull should be a deal breaker or a matter of concern.
The surveyor told me that he would not be concerned, and that if I was I should
buy a new boat (hah! not happening).
Do you agree with the surveyor's lack of concern about some level of moisture
in the bottom of a solid glass hull of a 40 year old boat?

Many thanks in advance for advice. My search for a boat has lasted a couple of
years now, has included a big learning curve, and has focused on CCs, in large
part because of the valuable information and assistance available on this site
from the members. Thanks again.___

Stus-List (no subject)

2014-04-24 Thread andrew rothweiler
Hello all,
Just returned from the trip to look at a CC 35-2.  I only saw two things that
concerned me (I'm no expert of course and I'd have a thorough survey),  and I'm
writing too ask people's opinions on these two issues.
First, at the keel to hull joint, directly under the mast, there was water
weeping through the joint onto both sides of the keel.  Also, if not mistaken,
I believe that the forward keel bolt, which is under the mast and can't be seen
unless the mast is removed, is in this location on a vertical plane.  Is this
weeping at the hull/keel joint a serious concern? (i.e. is it enough not to
waste money on a survey?) Is it likely that there is water running from the
bilge or through the mast, past the keel bolt under the mast (hence a
potentially comprised/rusty keel bolt under the mast?) and coming out through
the joint?  1) the owner has had the boat shrink wrapped and on the hard for
the last three years, and told me that winds this winter have blown the shrink
wrap off the boat, and this spring is the first time the weeping has occurred.
2)  The entire hull keel joint looked to me to be very good or excellent, no
smile visible, and the bottom looked
pretty smooth with a near perfect coat of fresh bottom paint.
Second,  the washer on the center (lowest in the bilge?) keel bolt was
extremely rusty. The other visible keel bolts and washers looked very good. I
don't remember if the center keel bolt itself was rusty. Also,  the gelcoat
surface of the bottom of the keel was spider cracked pretty thoroughly, I
thought at the time that this was superficial and cosmetic. Are the rusty keel
bolt washer and the spider cracked surface of the bilge potential areas of
concern?
Thank you in advance for any guidance here.

Stus-List CC 35-2 questions

2014-04-19 Thread andrew rothweiler
Hello all,  need some advice please.

There's a 35-2 for sale that I'll be looking at this week. The boat seems to be
a base model without many options; no teak holly sole, no hot pressure water
(does have cold water system), no genoa tracks.
So my questions are:
1) Can anyone give a ballpark idea of how much it would cost to have hot
pressure water added (by a yard shop, since I don't have the knowledge/tools
etc to tackle such a job)?  Is resale value of this boat diminished much by not
having hot pressure water/shower?
Is the resale value and desirability of this model increased very much by
adding  the hot pressure water/shower feature?

2) Is there any indication on the deck or inside the liner of the proper
factory mounting location for genoa tracks, which I would add? I've seen a boat
of a different brand that doesn't have the tracks, but you can see the
pre-molded location in the deck, and there are access panels in the cabin to
reach the mounting bolts from underneath without having to cut holes in the
liner.  Does the CC 35-2 have any similar indicators of the genoa track
location?

A week or so ago some folks were commenting on the value of this forum and the
contributions of the members, especially as it relates to the enhanced value
and desirability of CCs.  As a prospective CC owner, I can affirm that
sentiment wholeheartedly. I've been on the hunt for my first full sized
sailboat for a couple of years, and subscribing to this forum has greatly
contributed to my sailboat education, and to the process of figuring out what
would be the right boat for me. Of the makes of boats that I've considered,
imo the CC forum is by far the most active and educational  source to help a
prospective owner navigate the variables of sailboat buying.  This forum offers
great reassurance to a newcomer like myself  that there is knowledgeable advice
available when issues inevitably come up related to ownership and maintenance.
Thanks again to everyone for their advice and assistance.

Stus-List 35-2 traveler question

2014-01-23 Thread andrew rothweiler
There's a 35-2 that I'm looking at buying, and my question  is whether it would
be possible to move the traveler from the bridge deck to just forward of the
helm (the way it is on the 35-1). I haven't been able to find just  the right
picture that will show if there is enough room ahead of the helm pedestal and
behind the lazerettes to install a bridge or some kind of support to mount the
traveler.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.___

Stus-List Comparing boats for purchase

2014-01-10 Thread andrew rothweiler
Hello All,
Requesting some advice about interpreting data/stats on 2 boats I'm considering
for purchase.  Having a boat that has the traveler and genoa winches easy to
reach from behind the helm is a key factor for me so that  control/single
handing will be easier.
Also, I'm using PHRF numbers to help determine which boat might be more
competitive in  club races.
So the two boats are a CC 35-2 and a CS 36T.

The stats I'm using are from the PHRF site and SailboataData.com:  (don't know
how this chart will come out on the forum)

  LOA  LWL  B D
 SA DISP  SA/DISP   DISP/LWL   FORE/MAIN SAIL AREAS

CC 35-2  PHRF 123-139-126    35' 30.77  10.58   5.58   629sf    13,800
 17.56 224.34  352.5/276.75

CS    36T   PHRF 123-135-126    36.5   29.92  11.5 6.35   640sf    15,500
   16.53  258.34 367.5/272.53

My main question is how can the CS36 have a nearly identical PHRF to the CC
when the CS 1) weighs almost 2,000lbs more and 2) doesn't compensate for the
weight with a lot more sail area, the total sail areas being almost the same?
What other factors must be considered in understanding why a similar size boat
with almost the same waterline and sail area but weighs a ton more has the same
PHRF? What am I missing?   Which of the two boats would do better in club races
and around the marks?

Thanks in advance for your help in understanding this.___

Stus-List 33tep rebuild

2013-07-24 Thread andrew rothweiler
Thank you for the responses and info about the 33-2 potential mast step
rebuild.  A previous contributer was mentioned, who described his first hand
experience with this issue, and the related cost.
Is there a way to search older posts to try to locate this post?

Do you think that if a boat does not exihibit this mast step problem right now
(if that what the survey shows when it's done in the next week or so),  that
the problem could still occur in the future? Or is it a case in which if the
problem hasn't shown up by now, this particular boat will likely not have the
problem later?

Thank you again for your help and courtesy.___

Stus-List (no subject)

2013-07-22 Thread andrew rothweiler
Hello,
It's really helpful and informative to read the posts on this list, thanks to
all who contribute.

I'm have  a 33-2 under contract, but have heard about a potential keel/mast
step issue with this model, having to do with a collapsing grid. I've tried to
research this on the CC site on Sailnet, but there's little info going back to
2008 posts. Guess I'll find out more from the survey.

Can anyone guide me to a source of info about this?  Should such a problem
eliminate a specific boat from consideration? Is the proper repair very
expensive? Sounds like it would be.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.___
