This is the old out-of-gas trick ROFLMAO
(A long time ago we took some damage in a hurricane and it took a few days to
get the boat going again. My friend’s girlfriend was on here first sailing trip
and over the barely readable radio connection it sounded like her parents
suspected similar. The girl in question had no idea this wasn’t a routine event

After discussing this with my wife, her take on it was that the blond enticed
the other woman (non sailor) into taking the voyage with the notion of a
romantic escape. When it turned out to be somewhat different than all fun and
relaxation, the communication devices went inoperative and the boat became
mysteriously un-sailable (rigging damage, etc). So in effect, a kidnapping.
I think when authorities start interviewing both parties separately, the
non-sailor may not have the same enthusiasm about returning to sea with Ms.
Appel in the future. And as with most everything, my wife’s intuition about
being trapped on a boat would be spot on. She’s certainly felt that way on our
boat before (seasick, 3 months pregnant, in 4-6’ quartering seas..”It’s OK
honey, it will just be for a couple more hours..”).

Indeed. I was at the dentist today and when I mentioned I'm into sailing, the
dental hygienist asked if I had heard of the two lost sailors. And that
apparently they had some electronic gizmo ("epirb" I said).

When your dental hygienist has heard of them but probably never heard of
Clipper, America's Cup, or Slocum, it's definitely a bit ridiculous (how easily
manipulated the media and public attention are).

Actually it's been quite a learning experience from the listers comments.First
I don't have to read all the articles, just get the synopsis from the
list.Second, pointing out the discontinuities is a very thought provoking
process and definitely the mistakes remind us of things not to do and
qualifications to achieve before taking on such an endeavor.Maybe not
specifically C, but related since it's about sailing, especially long
distances and away from shore.RonWild CheriC 30-1STL

Indeed. I was at the dentist today and when I mentioned I'm into sailing,
the dental hygienist asked if I had heard of the two lost sailors. And that
apparently they had some electronic gizmo ("epirb" I said).

When your dental hygienist has heard of them but probably never heard of
Clipper, America's Cup, or Slocum, it's definitely a bit ridiculous (how
easily manipulated the media and public attention are).

Yes, but the
report in the UK Mail says that they had a mast problem, and
could sail at 4-5 knots. I don’t see why that is a

4 knots in 30 days is 2880 nmiles. Could reach civilization from most places
in the Pacific

Yes, but the
report in the UK Mail says that they had a mast problem, and
could sail at 4-5 knots. I don’t see why that is a
problem. The real question is now they got “lost”.
Did they have no navigational capability? No solar or
wind power? Also, they lost their cell phone overboard the
first day. What use is a cell phone in the Pacific Ocean?
Lots more to hear on this one. Dave

Ok, wtf? Story on

news tonight about a sailboat that was stranded in the
Pacific for 5months after their engine broke down on an
otherwise functional boat. Apparently the crew survived as
they had a water maker and a year’s supply of oatmeal.
Something not add up here? And who really has a 1 year
supply of oatmeal for two people and a dog?

Gotta be more coming on this

one...
