Ok, being the frugal *ahem* I am, I can think of  a number of solutions
including cutting your own leather, cutting thick but flexible highly UV

white ribbed hose like West Marine sells for through hulls and waste hose.  And
of course the fire hose is yet another example.Perhaps I'm showing my dislike

I don't know what brand you are considering.  Last year I had Torreson Marine in Muskegon install new boots.  They used Taylor Made, part numbers Tay 960027 and Tay 960026, large and medium.  Medium for uppers, large for mowers.  About 45 per pair.

Re: Stus-List Spreader Boots

2016-06-01 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I expect that I'll hear quite a bit of push back but, I don't have spreader
boots and it has never caused me a problem. The sails have spreader
patches to prevent chaff. I resist spreader boots since they hold moisture
and can contribute to corrosion. They also prevent the rain from rinsing
out the spreader tips and the interface with the stays. Of course they
also contribute to windage aloft.

Tom,

I bought a bunch of leather at the boat show a couple years ago. I cut it
and sew my own spreader boots. I had the mast down two years ago and
installed them. No problems since. No one can see the workmanship, as
they're 20' in the air. Problem solved! Money saved!

Especially if you intend to pull the rig, Jim, sewing elkhide boots on is
remarkably easy. I did that last year with mine and even though I though I made
a hash of the job, you wouldn't know it from the deck! Mind you, I did start
with the top set of spreaders first. It's a quick enough job that it can be
done from a bosun's chair without earring yourself out.

I'm having a rigger come out next week to have a look at our standing
rigging and mast, it's all original so I'm sure we'll end up with yet
another horrific bill. I'm seriously considering going to wire instead of
rod, but I'll get quotes on both

Andrew, you're right, I want to pull the mast so I can take the collar off
the deck, fix some voids, and rebed it, plus change all the fixtures and
the wiring, and add spreader boots. Elkhide sounds good, I'll have to see
if I can find some. I have cowhide and deerhide (I think) in storage
somewhere.

That brings up another thought, I'll start a separate thread for that.

I just did the rigging on Peregrine. The riggers were able to re-head all but
the V2/D3, which had to be replaced because of aligning the top spreaders with
the bend in the rod. The cost was about $5k for literally the best guys in the

Edson elkhide spreader boots are available at West Marine for about $70 per
pair, which is about twice the price of the Taylor Made nylon boots. The boots
on my lower spreaders (where there is contact with the headsail) are elk hide.
The boots on the uppers (which are above the leach of the 135) are nylon.

The elk hide boots last forever – or so it seems. The Nylon ones are much more
durable than the rubber boots you see most commonly.

Rick,

I bought a big hunk of elk hide at the boat show many years ago. I make my own
spreader covers. So far, I’ve only made one set and they have been on the boat
for five years and are looking good still. It doesn’t take a lot of skill,
just a pattern, a pair of scissors, and a leather punch. It was actually a fun
little project.

I put mine on when the mast was down, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be done
with the mast up.

Re: Stus-List Spreader boots 1984 C&C 35-3

2017-10-27 Thread DON JONSSON via CnC-List
Hi Jim

I had Blackline do mine in 2010. I replaced the rod with wire. They also
installed radar on the mast, replaced corroded spreader tips, etc. Cost was
close to $6,800 minus taxes.

Cheap compared to the cost of the new motor I'm in the process of putting in.

By the way, we followed your model more or less on the installation of our
windlass. That was a great help to see your installation. Didn't use it a lot
this summer but it always worked well. Such a joy.

Finally got a quote from Blackline. Initial estimate was $5K, full quote was
$10K.
I'm not sure what Plan B is at this point, that's double what I have heard from
others who have done the switch from rod to wire.

I just did the rigging on Peregrine. The riggers were able to re-head all but
the V2/D3, which had to be replaced because of aligning the top spreaders with
the bend in the rod. The cost was about $5k for literally the best guys in the
world to do it all.

I'm having a rigger come out next week to have a look at our standing rigging
and mast, it's all original so I'm sure we'll end up with yet another horrific
bill. I'm seriously considering going to wire instead of rod, but I'll get
quotes on both

Andrew, you're right, I want to pull the mast so I can take the collar off the
deck, fix some voids, and rebed it, plus change all the fixtures and the
wiring, and add spreader boots. Elkhide sounds good, I'll have to see if I can
find some. I have cowhide and deerhide (I think) in storage somewhere.

That brings up another thought, I'll start a separate thread for that.

2017-10-27 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
FWIW, I signed on to having all the rod replaced on our 37’. I received a
quote, and I’m guestimating the labor costs because we are doing everything
rigging/lifeline related, that came in at around $9,000.00 to $9,500.00.

Hope that’s a good reference.
