The most accurate method would be to do a rubbing with crayon, i.e. like an elementary school gravestone rubbing, and scanned at full scale. The gentleman on the list with CAD/CAM capabilities could trace this in Adobe Illustrator or CAD and used as a base file for CAM. Just remember to get the depth of the letters measured and thickness of the plate with calipers. Re: Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates
I'm with Edd, I'd like the polished with recessed letters. I only posted the pictures of the originals to give perspective and an idea of what it looked like from the factory. Ken Heaton is the man for more pictures and specs. Those polished pictures are from his boat. I envision this plate completely covering the original area plus some margin. I would mount it with 2 studs welded to the back that could be bedded like any other deck hardware right through deck. Of course we would have to figure out how to remove the original. Or maybe just grind it down flush so the plate would sit on top. It appears those letters were glued on but now we can 3D model and machine this as one piece. Depending on what material they are made from it may not be cheap but they would certainly be durable. The other style shown while not photographed straight on could also be made easily but it is not clear from the photos how deep the letters go, i.e. all the way through like a water jet would produce. From the pictures the raised version looks recessed into the fiberglass like an aluminum window frame. The flush version appears to be attached with screws and proud of the boat surface. To my eye the raised version looks to be aluminum and the flush version is stainless or perhaps just polished. Are these design plans available or would someone be able to provide a sample. Josh, The original comes off pretty easily. That’s what started this whole thing for me :-) They were glued in — nothing through the deck. I would probably want to do the same with the new ones. I would love a flat stainless version that I could use to put vinyl letters on like “ENTERPRISE” or “NCC-1701-B”. All the best, Edd Edd M. Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates
David, I can draw up some specs for you. You’re correct, the originals had the letters and “CC sword” glued on. I, for one, would love a couple of blank stainless plates to go there, but some listers may want “CC 37+” or “CC 37XL”, etc on them. I’m not sure, but the 34+, XL and R may have/nee the same size. I’ll do some measuring on Wednesday and get back to you. All the best, Edd Edd M. Re: Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates
Hello David, As the Stainless Steel name plates shown are on my boat I can tell you the following: The other style shown while not photographed straight on could also be made easily but it is not clear from the photos how deep the letters go, i.e. all the way through like a water jet would produce. The letters are only about 1/32 deep and are paint filled. The flush version appears to be attached with screws and proud of the boat surface. On my deck the recesses have been filled as part of a previous deck repair and repaint so the plates are flush and attached with screws as you have noted. The boat is about a two hour drive away right now. I'll take a good photo of the plate when I get to her next. Fair winds. Re: Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates
I think the original nameplates on our boats were fiberglass cutouts made by CC and glued on. I did find plastic raised letters in an auto store that would look nice glued in place into the OEM base, but I just never got around to installing them. cost was $10 or $15. The letters I found are black on silver grey, but could be painted a different color. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bell-Custom-Personalized-License-Plate-Frame-Tag-Holder-Customized-Text-Vanity-/391054753780?hash=item5b0cadfff4vxp=mtr - Original Message - From: Josh Muckley via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com To: CC List cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Josh Muckley muckl...@gmail.com Sent: Sunday, June 7, 2015 12:36:26 AM Subject: Re: Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates I too am looking for these metal plaques. I'm looking to replace the broken plates that are on the sides of the cabin. They are long, rectangular, with curved corners and they had a raised CC 37+ on it. I seem to remember someone getting a steel version somewhere. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. All the best, Edd --- Edd M. Re: Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates
I have the stainless steel ones but was not able to learn where they came from. They were on the boat when I bought it. I did ask one of the former owners but they were put on after his time. I suspect someone with a CNC mill in a machine shop made them. I too am looking for these metal plaques. I've been canvasing the internet for a manufacture. Unfortunately it looks like cheap and easy are out of the question.
