Re: Stus-List C 33 mark 2 (1985)

2015-12-14 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
I have the full keel version, in Whitby. As with the others, I would have
no reservations about this engine in this boat. The 33ii is a very easily
driven hull, it does not take much power at all. Going into a chop is not
something you will not want to do for hours - its a light boat, and flat
bottomed forward. A rough ride. I have done it and the engine was
adequate but in the worst I slowed to 4.5kts. (if memory serves)
Props matter a lot. I have experimented with 3 different props in Windstar
and have found a huge difference. First the original which was a very
tired folding Martec, not great. A new folding Gori made all the
difference. I would have your friend confirm what's on the boat and that
it is the correct diameter and pitch.

A good friend is interested in making an offer on a 33 mark 2 centerboard
version. The boat has a Yanmar 2GM20 with a 2 blade feathering prop - 16
Hp. This is the basically the same engine that I have in my 29 mk 2. It
would seem that the boat would be underpowered with this engine. Does
anyone have information that might help to answer this question. Did C
offer an option of the 2GM or 3GM engine in this boat?

We have a 1985 C 33 MkII with the 2gm20f engine, bought it late last fall on
Lake Michigan and sailed/mostly motored back around through Mac to Sarnia this
spring (430NM) in some not so nice weather. You're not going to tow any skiers
but I wouldn't call it short of power.

That is the OEM standard for that boat.
The 2GM20 is also rated at 20 Hp, depending on what reference you are using.
On that basis the boat would meet the rule of thumb of 2 rated Hp per 1000
pounds of displacement.

Stus-List C 33 mark 2 (1985)

2015-12-13 Thread robert via CnC-List
Most, if not all, of the C 33 MKII's that I have been aboard have had
the 2 cylinder Yanmar as the factory install. A long time ago, we
motored one from Halifax to Marbleheadthe 2 cylinder got us there.

My 1984 C 32 has a similar displacement as the 33 MKII and has a
Yanmar 2GMF which is rated, I think, at 13 hp.

No question these boats are probably under hp'd but they are first and
foremost, sail boats.

Like another lister said, I wouldn't let that stop me from owning one.

Ours has OEM 3GM30 = 24 hp with folding 2 blade Martec prop. Works well in all
conditions. Know some owners of sisterships with 2GM that advise works well
until get into chop or wind then is underpowered

Don't let the engine size deter you- our 33-ll k/CB had the 2gm when we bought
her. Always got us where we were going.

I did upsize when I repowered to a Beta 25. Which just fit in the space.

I bought a C 33 MK II with this engine last fall.
I had a larger engine in my Mirage 29 & thought it may be under powered.
The Yanmar 2 GM 20 moves Enterprise (the 33) along nicely.
