Re: Stus-List Geared folding props

2018-02-20 Thread Charles Nelson via CnC-List
I 2nd the Gori 2 blade geared folding prop:

Lowest drag of ANY prop by experiments reported in Yachting a few years ago.

Detailed recommendation of pitch and diameter after boat owner supplied info on
engine, trains ratio and boat displacement.

Cost was comparable to other props with experimentally measured higher drag,
even if only marginally higher.

Geoff at AB Marine very knowledgeable and helpful in prop selection--he is a
New Zealander so don't say he has an English or Australian accent!

Issues in reverse same as other geared, folding props.

Enough forward force to drive my boat at hull speed.

I service it at yearly haul-outs (inspect, clean, lubricate) and, like the
Energizer bunny, it keeps on going and going, etc.

No connection with company but a very satisfied customer.

Stus-List Geared folding props

2018-02-20 Thread SEAN CONNER via CnC-List
I had a Martec folding prop on my 34 and upgraded to a flex-o-fold when I
repowered to a 3GM30. Originally intended to go with a 2 blade folding
Flex-o-Fold, but after doing some research and talking with locals owners, I
went with the 3 blade feathering and LOVE IT. Tons of grab in reverse, tons
of torque and oomph in a headwind or sea, and in my local fleet what ever I'm
losing in speed just doesn't make a difference. I use a "shaft shark" on the
prop shaft and have never had any issues with catching debris or seaweed, etc;
The prop seems to open and close smoothly without any issues all season long
here in new england. I do not use any paint or oils.. just burnish it every
season.

Re: Stus-List Geared folding props

2018-02-19 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
No. But my boat is only in the water (fresh water at that) for seven months at
a time.

However one calm day last summer I eased her into a shallow cove so I could
clean her bottom while standing on the lake bottom. I realized too late I was
in an area of grasses / algae / vegetation. When I went to motor back to the
marina, the prop was fouled and wouldn’t open all the way. Once I was finally
back in my slip after a very inefficient half hour of motoring, I dove the boat
to unfoul the prop. No fishing line or anything involved, just a bunch of
vegetation wrapped around it and stuck in the gears.

I have a Gori folding prop (geared). I grease the gear teeth with marine
grease every launch.

Cheers,
Randy

I have a Gori 2 blade and no, no issues. Fresh water boat though we (though
not i, yet) do get zebra mussels and algae etc.
Happy with it, forward and reverse.

Flex-o-fold, no issues opening in forward, a quick shot of power opens fine in
reverse, less prop walk than the fixed 2 blades it replaced.

OK, you all know I have a Martec on Touche' and, for the most part, am
satisfied with it. However, if I did change, my inclination would be to
replace it with a geared 2 blade folder. Especially since I think Martec

I have a SPECIFIC question for those who have a geared 2 blade folder.

With your geared 2 blade folder, have any of you noticed a failure to fully

Flex-o-fold, and no. However: a) I’ve only had mine on for one season; b) I
noticed at the end of the season that it did not open and close as smoothly as
it did when first installed (although it appeared to be working fine); and c)
I’m on Lake Erie, so my marine growth is not the same as yours.
