A lot of new boat construction now uses similar composite materials for core material rather than the traditional balsa for this reason. Normally for a bulkhead I would use marine plywood since it is less work and will outlast me but I was asked to use this which will outlast the boat. Since Persistence has been structurally very sound since we purchased her I have not had much chance to do glass work or other similar projects. Used to do a lot on our former J27 Nut Case so thought I would lend a hand by taking on this project. Is fun in a weird sadistic kind of way. I will have to admit that I have not spent much time updating Persistence web site with information from the past two years. Maybe one day sooner rather than later. There is however a lot of information on the J27 Nut Case site about projects such as replacing deck core, installing garboard drains, building boat trailers and various other tasks. Richard, It is a synthetic material that is strong not doesn’t absorb moisture and doesn’t rot. A lot, if not most, use it I’m making boats these days instead of balsa wood. Nice, I'm using some coosa board to replace the small bulkhead in my chain-locker this week. The headstay chainplate will be bolted to this also. I was advised to use some heavy fiberglass on each side of the coosa board - it's the glass that will hold the chainplates ultimately, but the coosa seems very strong.
