What worked well for me was a heat gun,

Then Bahco carbide scrapers, I have the 2” and 1” triangle that Jim Watts
turned me onto several years ago, this gets you right down to the quick, then
the orbital sander hooked up to the shop vac. I removed them to the shop, it
was probably worth the re-bunging to be able to work comfortably at hip level
and do a good job without nicking every upright surface around the edges. Note,
the 1” triangle scraper is to be used only by adults.

Did you strip right down to bare wood? If so what method did you use for
stripping? Chemical, sanding, scraper?

The video on Jamestown distributor says he scrapes and believes that keeping
the scraper sharp, maybe 4 passes before resharpening, is the best and cleanest
method. Very little dust, very little wood removed.

I recently installed new stair treads at home - replacing the old
carpet stairs with new oak hardwood.
But with kids at home I was concerned about traction with kids at
  home.
I went to Home Depot and bought a small package of "paint grit" -
only a couple $. White powdery substance. I was worried that it
might stay white looking - but not at all.
I mixed a bunch straight into my Polyurethane (MinWax) then rolled
it onto the steps with my second coat.
You can clearly see the grit as bumps in the surface - but the
wood grain looks great and tons of traction (even in socks) with
  no colour change.

I did the floors on Paradigm with 3 encapsulation coats of WEST System,
followed with5 or 6 coats of Epifanes gloss. They looked great and lasted
beautifully. This time around I'd be tempted to use Varathane Semi-gloss
solvent-based over the epoxy, it's a much faster build and extremely
durable.

Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish

2014-10-23 Thread dwight via CnC-List
Danny

So you put Spar Varnish on top of epoxy, I am wondering why? Does it give a
better shine or is it more abraison resistant or something else? The
polyurethane floor finish that I used on some oak flooring in my home has a
lasting shine and stands up to normal indoor/outdoor shoe traffic very
well.actually that part is the most heavily travlled flooring in the house

I took my old teak and holy cabin sole to bare wood with chemical paint
stripper and a scraper followed by a light sanding and solvent wash and
applied 1 coat of Sikkens marine cetol and that last 8 years very well and
it saw a lot of use. This past season before launch I stripped a few bad
spots that had developed near the nav station again with paint stripper,
then a light spot sanding, solvent wash and 1 coat of cetol on the bare
spots only and then a couple days later solvent washed the entire sole and
applied 1 coat of the Sikkens cetol on all of it , this time the same cetol
that I used on my cedar home (seems like just about the same stuff as the
marine cetol but again 1/3 the cost and besides I had left over from doing
my house.I am very pleased.not high gloss, sort of satin finish but all the
rest of the teak, and there is quite a lot of teak on a 35MKII is oiled, so
the satin finsih on the sole matches the bulkheads and other interior teak
quite well, not overly slippery and pretty darn good appearance for a cabin
sole that is now 40 years old. Not that much work to do and not that much
work to maintain and not much cost either.can't imagine doing 8 coats!!!

 Listers,

Seeking recommendations for a varnish to use on the interior
 floorboards on the Enterprise.

Of course, I want something that is easy to apply, takes a
coat or two to have a award-winning appearance, is durable and something
that will last for a decade or more. And since that produce doesn’t exist,
I’d like to know what would be the best compromise.

The boat's up for the winter, so I’d like to get brushing
 over the next few weekends.

 All the best,

 Edd

Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish

2014-10-23 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I do not.

It is certainly not as slippery as several years ago, when I put some armor all
on the floor. Looked great, cleaned up great, and the kids could slide from one
end to the other in their socks.

I have the polyurethane on my steps as well, but I also have 4 1” wide strips
per step of a 3M product,

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2159

The clear version, you can kind of see the wood through it.

Bill

Bill,

do you know how slippery it is when wet?

I need to refinish the steps down the companionway.

On the recommendation of our local Shipwright, I used Minwax Fast drying
Polyurethane. Satin.

Looks beautiful. Wears like iron.

For exterior application, I think I may try some stuff from these guys,

They got an excellent write-up in Soundings.

Did new floor boards for my 36 last winter. West epoxy then 8 coats minwax
helmsman. I have used many, and this is as good as any. I used gloss, not
slippery if you are wearing shoes.

Re: Stus-List Interior Floor Varnish

2014-10-23 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Did you strip right down to bare wood?  If so what method did you use for
stripping?  Chemical, sanding, scraper?

The video on Jamestown distributor says he scrapes and believes that keeping
the scraper sharp, maybe 4 passes before resharpening, is the best and cleanest
method.  Very little dust, very little wood removed.
