Great information….I’m working through my mast this Fall. Thinking about the
paint system as well.

I just got done painting one side of my mast, I used to use PPG Concept, the
fellow at the paint store (this is a car paint store, BTW) recommended Matrix.
It is a little confusing, it is all under the umbrella of Sherman Williams,
but on the can it sais AIC, (Advanced Industrial Coatings.) This stuff is
tougher than nails. Only 75 bucks for a gallon, but the hardener and reducer is
another story. Concept had gotten over a few hundred a gallon. Simple mix, 1
part Hardener, 2 parts reducer, and 8 parts Paint. I love the White – ok, it’s
white, but it looks great. I sprayed the boom, which went nicely, but I
painted the mast outside, and didn’t want to deal with compressors and hoses
and such, so I used a brush. For the most part, it looks glossy and sprayed. I
started out with slow reducer and hardener, but then bought extra slow
hardener. I wouldn’t mind extra super slow hardener, but a little less breeze,
or a cooler day would help immensely. Have pix of the Can and color formula if
needed.

Number on the can is K1-5469864 A

One other thing – forget about the roll and tip, if you are working horizontal.
Maybe even vertical – I threw away the roller, and used some 16 oz dispensers,
like a mustard dispenser. (available in a six-pack, at Scam’s Club) Just
stream a ziz-zag along in front of the brush, MUCH faster and nicer.

I used Brightside on mine.

Rolled and tipped. 3 coats.

Sanded the original anodised mast right down to full metal. Etched with WEST 2
part etc (No longer available) then primed with Zinc Chromate (No longer
available)

All of the “No longer available” I happened to find old stock around, with
folks who didn’t know it has been banned.

Looks amazing and has been up for 3 years with no problem.

Brightside is not hard like the epoxy paint that Akzo Nobel sell, but It was
straightforward to apply, once I learned to really, really thin it, and keep a
wet edge.

A few dings, of course, with the yellow chromate showing through till I touch
it up.

Awl grip is easy to bush on with great results. You may want to have a helper
painting the other side of the mast at the same time, but that's true of any
paint. I would certainly use Awl Grip. Just make sure you're in a a non dusty
part of the yard. Not that it really matters, all you're going to see is the
bottom 8 feet of the mast.

Not enough detail. Are you doing it yourself? Awlcraft 2000 is what my
yard used. They had a spray gun and paint shed so it was a co trolled,
professional application. It may not be a good choice for a DIY.

For the task you describe, you'll benefit from one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-85035-35-MicroDriver-Set/dp/B0062FSAVI

or the Lowes Kobalt equivalent:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-35-Piece-Standard-SAE-and-Metric-Mechanic-s-Tool-Set-with-Hard-Case/3387640

Working from a bosun chair using a regular screwdriver over your head sucks
if the fastener is stuck. Chances are you'll booger up the head of the
fastener if it's stuck.

With a microdriver you can get more torque while applying downward
pressure. Trust me, my microdriver set goes aloft with me anytime I'm
working with fasteners.

I have a set for the house and a set on the boat. It's truly a "go to"
tool.

Tony,

My 1986 mast appears to be a one part enamel of some kind. I've used
Brightside enamel for touch ups.

My masthead sheaves are accessed by taking the cap off the top of the mast.
The cap is held on with a couple of Philips screws (on the top). The axles
are captive in a recess in the mast. If the halyards are out, you can just
lift up the axle. You can remove the cap with the mast up. I've done it
from a bosun's chair. You need to have a line to hold the halyards up while
you remove the axles. Note: if you are using the genoa halyard, only the
main axle will be able to be removed. I went up on the main halyard to
service the genoa halyard sheaves. Zephyr Works makes some nice sheaves to
your specs. Garhauer is also another good supplier.

a one component (enamel) or two component (urethane) paint. Ours is a C&C 41
with a Cinkel mast.

On another topic, the masthead sheeves need to be replaced. Does anyone have
