2020-10-28 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
If you have a LOT of patience it might not be a bad trip. You can possibly be
trapped for days or maybe even a week or two at various stops along the way. Do
keep in mind it is a lot of lee shore with harbors that have tremendously
dangerous bars across them, so ducking in when it gets bad is not an option. I
read about a trip from Baja that followed an old clipper route. They had
something like a Caliber LRC 40 with good tankage and went about 2/3s of the
way out to Hawaii in a big arc from Baja to Seattle.
Going to or near Hawaii avoids a lot of rocks and hard stuff.

For what it’s worth, a 44 foot boat is a lot of boat to truck.
I’m not suggesting it can’t be done, but there can be complications with a boat
that big. My 42 was shipped by truck approximately 45 miles when I purchased
her. She needed a “double drop” trailer (or some comparable name) due to the
height. Although it was shipped on its winter cradle, an area of the hull
where it sat on the forward cradle piece was damaged in transit (the other
glass skin was cracked). I had it repaired no problem, but it happened. The
trucking company had no issues on main highways but almost didn’t get through
the tunnel on the yacht club road (we had to remove the stanchions). I would
not ship my boat by truck unless the alternatives are daunting.

Thanks all for the notes on the ideas to move Alethea from LA to Seattle. From
what I understand of the history of this boat it is a SORC champion, and has
been on long extended cruises offshore. I am comfortable with my skills to sail
her offshore and she is currently suited for a 3-4 week trip in blue water. And
I have folks that can help crew for an extended period to move her by sailing
her to Seattle from LA. I have been studying various seasonal patterns and
July/August seems to be the most favorable for a deep water cruise sailing 1000
miles or so WNW then back to the ENE to the straits of Juan de Fuca… however
this means waiting till next summer. I have had a lot of people “wave me off”
of sailing north along the coast… everyone says it’s horrible and the trip
takes 4-5 weeks usually… sailing south is fine (Seattle/LA), but the other
direction, not so much.

On the other hand I have only seen two companies that would be able to give me
a quote for moving boat and mast ( approx. 60’ of mast and 44’+ of boat) via
truck… I am contacting the trucking companies that you all fine people have
recommended on the list. This would let me get her up here sooner and start
refitting for world cruising…(Yes I’d take a C on a world cruise )

Still would appreciate other ideas on sailing vs. trucking , contacts for
trucking, and I appreciate all the input so far. This is one of the best owners
list there is…

I’ll send another vote of support for trucking the boat and for Andrews
Trucking. I’ve used them twice and found the cost to be competitive and the
expertise well worth it. Their organizational skills may not be the best but
their boat handling is. We used them this summer to have a boat shipped from
Rhode Island to Ontario and there were no issues. As Tom B says they were the
original factory shippers so know the boats and when we were talking to the
driver this summer he said he had just been to California recently so they go
all over North America and will likely try to fit it in with some other
shipments. In our case this summer we got fit in last minute because they were
dropping another boat off close to R.I so they slipped down and picked it up.

Cheers,

I used Andrews as well to move our 27 to North Carolina and to bring our 33

Call Glen at Andrews Trucking and get his advice. (aka ATL Trucking).
He moved a friends new purchase from Sodus NY to Buffalo last month.
The rig was returning from a delivery to Ohio so you never know when
they can optimize the sked to give you a schedule.  If your boat is a
C it's probably not the first time they hauled it.

Stus-List Re: decision help on moving a boat

2020-10-26 Thread Marek Dziedzic
Not sure if it is help, but..

There is a reasonable report on SBO from a guy who sailed his boat (I think it
was a Catalina 34) from San Francisco to Vancouver Island. If I recall, about
two years ago. It took him more than a month. He hopped along the coast,
sailing only during the day and staying overnight in various harbours along the
coast. He did it two-handed. As it turned out, he motored most of the way. You
may want to check his report (e.g. here:

Hi All,

I am considering moving my recent purcahse from So Cal to Washington State. I
have two options… 1) move it from So Cal next summer when the weather windows
are more predictable and the weather milder by sailing it up (two weeks – NW
route out of So Cal for a Week, then a NE course to Washington for about a
week…LONG TACK)  OR

2) Move it by truck now and do some work during the winter…

So – If I choose 1) any thoughts on that and if 2) anyone know of a good
trucking company that is reasonably priced

Thanks
