Re: Stus-List Stus list Soft shackle
I have had reasonable success preventing the jib sheets snagging on the baby stay by running the baby stay through a piece of 1-1/8” ID PVC tubing about 4’ long. The cap from a Davis Instruments PVC Turnbuckle Boot (about $6.00) was used at the top. I happened to have the tubing, but if I did it again, a longer tube would be better. Last season I passed bitter end through the cringle and then through the spliced loop. That is cleaner than the soft shackle but makes sail changes more complex. Re: Stus-List Stus list Soft shackle
When I got Mistress 4 years ago it was my first sail boat, and when I stood the mast and rigged the boat for the first time, it was a lot of firsts all at once for me. Having taken lessons before I bought a boat I was expecting 2 separate jib sheets, to be tied with bowlines, but found only one sheet while rigging up. Not knowing any better I attached it exactly like this method. It is a bit tough to get loose at the end of the season, but I have never had it catch anything and will continue to use it as I don’t race and rarely if ever change the sail. If your spreaders are in-line (not angled aft), its use is primarily to keep the non-telephone pole mast from pumping in serious seas or chop. Disconnect it unless there is usually lots of chop where you race. My 1995 C 36 XL/ckb had an adjustable baby stay with in-line spreaders and my former sailmaker recommended I remove it for my use in local waters (NC sounds). I have been keeping it on board but I have now removed the track for it so its going in the shed! My 155% jenny likes it better that way! Agree with Bill. Guess it's the racer in me. I want separate sheets so I can change sails on the fly. Don't want to go bald or have a set of sheets for each headsail. Soft shackles are the way to go. Re: Stus-List Stus list Soft shackle
Francis, I will give you that is simple, but with two sheets each attached by soft shackle you can remove lazy sheet and attach to a different sail prior to hoist if need be. I have a luggage tag on a snap shackle to make sail changes faster. I was concerned about slippage, so I put a couple of stiches in with whipping thread. If you're looking for the simplest / lightest / most snagfree (And coolest in my book) way to attach your jib sheets to your jib forget about the soft shackle / 2 lines jib sheet with big bowline knots or splices to snag the spinnaker pole car / track / etc on its way across on a tack.
