[cobirds] Re: Kentucky Warbler at DeWeese Res., Custer Co. (still present 4/28)

2009-04-28 Thread Brandon Percival
The female Kentucky Warbler that Rich Miller found yesterday (4/27) was still
present this morning, seen at 10:15am or so.  Thanks to Rich for reporting this
great bird!!

I spent today birding in Custer Co. and had my first multiple warbler species
day (six) of the year.  The highlight was a KENTUCKY WARBLER found in the
willow thicket below the dam at DeWeese Res.  This thicket is almost
impenetrable but I was able to see birds moving around in it by looking down
from the cliff above it.  Besides the KEWA, there were a dozen or so
Yellow-rumps, a couple of Wilson Warblers and a FOY C. Yellowthoat here.  This
spot has produced several real gems in the past few years and it's a good place
to check out during warbler migration.

The reservoir is full and there is little exposed shoreline.  Shorebirdwise
there was a Spotted Sandpiper, an Avocet and several Wilson Phalaropes.
Hundreds of ducks but nothing unusual.

[cobirds] Loggerhead Shrike and Sparrows - BCLP - Jefferson Co.

2009-04-28 Thread hawkhen

Fellow birders:

At Bear Creeek Lake Park this morning I saw 4 Loggerhead Shrikes
between the Visitor Center and Pelican Point. Also saw FOS Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher.

Variety of sparrows in BCLP right now. In the area around Fitness
Station #1, I observed a mixed flock with Brewer's(FOS), Chipping,
Vesper and White-crowned plus a Green-tailed Towhee.
Throw in the breeding Song and Spotted Towhee and you have 7 species.
There was also a Sage Thrasher in this same general area.

The pair of Swainson's Hawks are back and looking to build a nest
(south of the Stables).

[cobirds] Summer Tanager, Fremont Co.

2009-04-28 Thread millerrichj
This morning I saw a stunning male Summer Tanager in a cottonwood tree at
near the eastern end of the Arkansas Riverwalk in Canon City. Also, many
Western Tanagers were out and about along the riverwalk.

The riverwalk was teeming with Yellow-rumped Warblers this morning. I
counted over 100 and I know I missed many more. The caddis fly hatch is in
progress and this is attracting scores of swallows and warblers.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding, Tuesday

2009-04-28 Thread Steven Brown

Hi COBirders,

Nancy Gobris, RMBO, banded at CBR today, 7am-2pm. Unlike in town, it
was not wet, and the low ceiling kept birds active all morning.
Mostly small birds today.

Banding Highlights: GC Kinglet, RC Kinglet, BG Gnatcatcher, FOY
Wilson's Warbler, FOY GT Towhee, Say's Phoebe, SP Towhee, Hermit
Thrush, male Audubon's Y-R Warbler, Blue Jays, Am Robins, House Wren,
and DE Junco (still around). A RB Nuthatch spent the morning close-by
the banding station chasing moths, and eluding the nets! Total of 15
new birds banded.

Plans are to be open all week, weather permitting.

[cobirds] Denver (the Birdy City) Report: Eastern Phoebe

2009-04-28 Thread Charles Thornton-Kolbe
At least briefly, Denver County was pretty birdy between about 2:40 PM and 3:25
this PM (Tuesday, April 28).

Walking on the east side of the Platte River from Evans and towards Florida
Avenue, I found an Eastern Phoebe, Bushtits and then a House Wren and the usual
crowd.  Also, two different Yellow-rumped Warbler flocks.

Phoebe was right on rivers' edge working two perches and moving the tail.  This
bird was about 150 to 250 yards from Evans (again walking heading north towards
Florida Avenue).   I did not refind the bird on the flip trip from Florida
Avenue.

Good Birding: Charles Thornton-Kolbe

P.S.  The Warbler flock on the north side of Florida along the pond there by
the bike trail had some sort of smaller (and different looking) Warbler along
with the Yellow-rumps...I dunno about the ID on that bird.

[cobirds] Highland Lake Report

2009-04-28 Thread Polly S
Took a slow walk around the southern and western shores of Highland Lake (Weld
County Roads 5 and 34 3/4).

About 15 or 16 Killdeer, appeared that several were courting the ladies.

I, Chukar (There is a hunt club up the road on WCR 5 that raises both Chukars
and Ring Necked Pheasants, so they are rather plentiful around here).

6 pairs - maybe more of what appear to be Western Grebes. Long slender necks
with white down the face and front. Black running from the top of the head down
the back of the neck. Body is grayish/brownish with more under the water than
above. Also a very long, slender neck, and fairly long, slender, yellow bill.

3 pairs of Mallards, and one pair of what at first looked like Mallards but are
larger than the others and marked somewhat differently. Couldn't zoom in close
enough with my binoculars to get good detail.

There is a very large nest at the top of an old cottonwood tree just west of
the inlet ditch. I could see a large bird, whether is is a hawk or owl, I
couldn't tell, as it was too far away from my vantage point. I'll have to head
over to that side of the lake tomorrow and see if I can get a closer look.

2, Great Blue Herons (although there are four currently here right now, I only
saw two).

My big thrill was:

5, Double-Crested Cormorants. These were perched on semi-sunken logs and a
little ways into the trees on the northwest shore of the lake, west of the
inlet ditch. While most of the shore line around the lake is easily accessible,
this area is difficult to get to as this is where the underground springs come
up and it is marshy with lots of trees and thick underbrush, and is bounded on
the east side by the inlet ditch to the lake - which is running full right now.
I was able to get to within 200 feet of them and see them clearly with the
binoculars. One was quite a bit darker than the others, although since it had
its back to me and the others were more side views, it is possible that it was
only an illusion. Their orange beaks were clearly visible as they were
preening. There was a Great Blue Heron just a few feet north of the
northernmost of them, so it was easy to compare size as well. Almost as tall as
the Great Blue, much heavier in body. They stood still like statues.

Highland Lake is a private lake, but is free and open to the public between
dawn and dusk. If you want to rent a boat or fish, there is a small charge. I
don't recommend you come to see birds here on the weekends starting about now
as the fishing season is starting and there is just too much activity. But at
least until June, weekdays are usually pretty quiet.

[cobirds] Summer Tanager in Pueblo 4/28

2009-04-28 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

I walked around Rock Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir dam late this afternoon and
early this evening fro, 430-630pm.  The highlight was a molting male SUMMER
TANAGER.  It was south east of the large fishing pond in Rock Canyon, between
the pond and the river.  Other highlights were a singing Yellow-breasted Chat
and a singing Cassin's Kingbird.  Both species breed at this location in small
numbers.  There were lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers everywhere in Rock Canyon,
that I went, some of singing.  The only other warbler I could pick out was an
Orange-crowned Warbler.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival

This morning (April 28, 2009) my mom and I were leaving for work and school
at about 6:30 AM when I saw a light-morph Broad-winged Hawk fly overhead
being mobbed by 4 or 5 Common Grackles. I ran back into the house to get the
camera. We drove a couple of houses down and parked across the street from
the hawk to take some photos. A few minutes later it took flight, again
being mobbed by the grackles.

After seeing Joey's post I decided to run down to Chatfield. Just as I left my
neighborhood I had a Broad-winged Hawk on a wire along Morrison road just east
of C-470. I got to watch and photograph him for a couple of minutes before he
flew into Bear Creek State Park. Once I reached Chatfield I was able to find
the 18+ Willets and 2 Marbled Godwits on the tires at the marina. Anyone
interested in the Willet and Godwit photos let me know.
