[cobirds] least tern -yes- Cherry Crk SP; other sightings
Knowing that birds like to eat at dawn and dusk, I saw the least tern from 7:45 to 8:05 PM. It flew over the Cottonwood Creek pond south of the park road, just next to the Belleview/Peoria turn (tern?), then settled on a small sand or mud bar in the middle of this pond. When it finally flew, it headed east...but I believe it will remain in this area until tomorrow. This pond has been created by one of the best examples of habitat enginering I have seen. Cottonwood Creek, northbound next to Peoria, has its channel made serpentine, with this pond as the largest part. It is shallow and has been a good spot for shorebirds and ibis and egrets all spring. On the north side of the road is the Cottonwood Creek pond across the road from the model airplane field...with the recent rains, the water level is high and not shorebird-friendly, unless you are an avocet. This habitat is excellent for some terns...somewhat the same as water near Safety Lagoon for Aleutian terns south of Nome. This small tern can patrol not only the small pond, but further upstream. It is difficult to see because: it is tiny, about half as bulky as the numerous killdeer, and not quite as long; it rests flat on sand bars or the sides of the creek, and is difficult to detect...and may be totally out of view if it is upstream behind vegetation; it is best detected when flying, which is infrequent. The bird life changes minute by minute at the pond...around noon there were two kingfishers copulating on a telephone wire (would Joe Roller call the female a queenfisher?), two avocets and the nesting loud killdeer were present...soon two snowy egrets, four blue-w teal, and four wh-f ibis joined them. Tonight a third avocet was there, and I believe will nest...three years ago they nested in the north pond. Also tonight... four spotted sandpipers, a cormorant, and five pelicans; peep and the two Wilson's phalaropes of last week have moved on. [cobirds] Black-headed Grosbeaks in Weld County
Hello Co-birders: When I returned from the CFO Conference in Alamosa, May 31, I was thrilled to see a Black-headed Grosbeak (male) working on my empty suet feeder. I put a small amount of berry treat in it and it came in again shortly thereafter with another male perched in a tree nearby. Also waiting to use the suet feeder while the Grosbeaks fed from it (one at a time), were a Black-capped Chickadee and a Downy Woodpecker. [cobirds] White-eyed Vireo
Today (Sunday) an adult White-eyed Vireo was banded at the Chatfield banding station (east of the Audubon Society of Greater Denver's Nature Center) by Meredith McBurney. This eastern visitor was clearly the bird of the week at the station. I photographed the bird. Bill Eden Denver **We found the real ‘Hotel California’ and the ‘Seinfeld’ diner. What will you find? [cobirds] Least Tern - Cherry Creek SP, Douglas Co.
The Least Tern was flying laps around the pond at the SW corner of CCSP this morning at 6:25am, after which it flew off toward the main reservoir at about 6:35am. There were also 2 Snowy Egrets and 2 Spotted Sandpipers on the pond, as well as pelicans, Killdeers, misc. common waterfowl, and many swallows overhead. I could not relocate the Least Tern over the reservoir, but with its diminutive size, it could easily have been out there somewhere. [cobirds] Dillon, Summit Co. backyard bird (a first)
Either an Indigo Bunting OR Lazuli Bunting in backyard as I type. entire head is blue no white ring on wing In the book I'm using, 1st spring adult female Indigo. I've got pictures; have to load them. Have never seen one before; it's with a pair of Western Tanagers, to the extent that when I see the Tanagers, I know the Bunting isn't far behind. [cobirds] Crow Valley, Prewitt, and Bebee Draw - 5/25
Hello Cobirds, Sol Miller and I birded Crow Valley, Prewitt, and Bebee Draw today (5/25). Our first stop was Crow Valley (Weld County), which for the most part was fairly slow. Some of the interesting birds we saw were a calling Alder Flycatcher, an adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler, and a western Veery. Prewitt Reservoir (Washington County) on the other hand was very birdy. The interesting birds that we had below the dam was an adult male Blackburnian Warbler (singing), an adult male Northern Parula (singing), 3 American Redstarts (2 young males (singing) and a female), a Red-eyed Vireo, a male Baltimore Oriole (singing), and a female Summer Tanager. There wasn't anything of note on the reservoir. Then we went to the inlet canal. The most interesting birds were 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher, 1 Great Crested Flycatcher, and an interesting warbler singing a high pitched song (either Bay-breasted, Cape May, or Blackburnian). We looked for a while trying to find the bird, but we couldn't find it. Then our final stop was Bebee Draw area (Weld County). While watching an American Bittern singing on County Road 48 we noticed an interesting cormorant flying towards us from the north which we were quickly able to turn into a Neotropic, this is presumably the same bird found at Lower Latham on the 19th. [cobirds] Red-throated Loon, Fremont Co.
Apparently undisturbed by the crowd of fishermen, the RED-THROATED LOON was still present at Brush Hollow Reservoir this morning. Other waterfowl present were Canada Geese, Coots and Western Grebes - species which seem to be tolerant of the human activity. Rich Miller Canon City **A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above.
