Geese a plenty,

Thank you, Tina Jones, I went over to Ft Logan Cemetery (Denver,Colorado)
today 11/17/13 and I must say the goose variety was represented properly. 2
Greater White-fronted joined the crowd, 2 Ross's (adults) were still
present, a single Snow Goose (white-morph) replaced the blue-morph, and a
couple of hybrids... Snow x Canada Goose and Ross's x Cackling
Goose. Photos.

[cobirds] Boulder Warblers

2013-11-17 Thread markchavez
There were a lot of birders enjoying the show at Center Green Drive in Boulder
today in the sun and wind. The Pine and Northern Parula ate non-stop in the
aphid tree while the Bay-breasted would take breaks for an hour and disappear.
It's surprising that warblers are the only birds taking advantage of this food
supply. Looking at my photos I noticed this Pine Warbler has a huge beak.
Photos of the warblers from today can be seen below:

I should also mention for anyone that is thinking about trying to find this
bird that Banner Lakes SWA is only open on Saturdays through Monday and
closed Tues-Fri.. It is a hunting area, so you may encounter hunters. And
the Rangers are more than happy to give tickets if they find you there when
it is closed.

Better directions - From the parking lot walk due East across the field and
you will see a grove of Russian Olive Trees. The bird was to the south,
toward the road, in the Russian Olives (along with MANY robins). A map of

[cobirds] Pine Warbler...when did it arrive in the tree?

2013-11-17 Thread Paula Hansley
I went to Center Green Dr. a little over a week ago and observed the
Bay-breasted Warbler in the pine at the same time as Peter Gent and Peter
Burke were there. On Saturday, I came back with Bill Kaempfer and John
Vanderpoel's trip to look at the warbler. We joined a group from the WBC
led by Steve Frye that was already there.

I distinctly remember looking at a warbler with a yellow face and chin,
which was foraging near the end of a branch on the south side of the tree.
Two people who were standing by me and also looking at the yellowish
warbler said to me, "are there two birds in the tree?" One also said, "is
that a goldfinch?" I said "no, it has a warbler bill". At that time, most
of the birders were on the east side of the pine looking at the
Bay-breasted Warbler and mentioning various field marks. I don't think
they could have been looking at "our warbler" because too many branches
were in the way.

I think that both the Pine and Bay-breasted Warblers were present at that
time. I also remember one photographer's picture from that week showing
the yellow chin and yellow face. In most photos, the bird looked like a
Bay-breasted.

I know it would be extremely unlikely, and I am hesitant to say, but at one
point it sounded like I had two Eastern Towhees calling back and forth
from different bushes!! I only saw one bird (though saw it three different
times with a break inbetween, so am only assuming it was hte same bird each
time), so most likely only one... but if anyone sees two let me know!!

[cobirds] Pine Warbler joins Northern Parula, Boulder

2013-11-17 Thread Todd Deininger
Yes, the exact same tree that has hosted the Bay-breasted Warbler on
Center Green Dr. since 11/7.

When I arrived to see the parula a little before 10am, it was pointed out
to me that a Pine Warbler was also being seen. All three warbler species
were being observed at the same time. I left around 11am and the BBWA was
not seen for a while.

If there is no crowd when you get there, the Pine Warbler would stay still
for awhile, then go back to feeding mostly in the top of the tree.

So I wonder what the record is for the most warbler species in one tree in
the month of move?

[cobirds] Slate-colored Fox Sparrow - Red Rocks - Jeffco

2013-11-17 Thread Michael Henwood
On my way out of Red Rocks this morning, I stopped at a spot on W. Alameda
Parkway (there is a sign Fountain Formation) and in the thick scrub I spotted a
Slate-colored Fox Sparrow. Later on at the private feeder next to this spot, I
had a great look at the Fox Sparrow again.

The location is off the W. Alameda Pkwy entrance to Red Rocks. After you pass
the last house on the right hand side of the road (north side), there is a
thick brushy area underneath some red cliffs. There is a small sign that reads
"Fountain Formation". Just north of this brushy area is a house with bird
feeders. I first spotted the Slate-colored Fox Sparrow in the brushy area
described above.

In the past we have had Slate-colored Fox Sparrows visit the feeders at the Red
Rocks Trading Post, so they must migrate along the foothills and use the Red
Rocks area as a stop-over.

Re: [cobirds] Re: November Warbler Summary Update

2013-11-17 Thread Joe Roller
This is an interesting thread. Brandon is correct in answering David
Leatherman's question, of "what's next?"
with the reply, "pretty much anything."
And there are specific, evidence-based answers to David's intriguing
question:

First, *Pine Warbler* is not our only "winter warbler."

That status also applies to *Cape May Warbler*, with multiple "after
Halloween" records.
It has been found at bird feeders in winter and visited both Jane Axtell's
and Alex Cruz's feeders daily for a week or more.
(Keep that suet feeder filled, and find a source for overnight Fed-Ex
delivery of meal worms).

Another winter warbler is *Painted Redstart*. Two of Colorado's first four
Painted Redstart records were
from late fall:
Oct 25 through November 8 in El Paso County and
November 16 through 22, Larimer County.

And I recall, possibly correctly, that Peter Gent explored a southeast
Colorado woodlot
in December, a long time ago, and the only bird present was a hardy
*Connecticut
Warbler*.

This ancient information is from "Bob and Bob," where else?

[cobirds] Canada Goose Cross ID Help

I saw a couple of very unusual Canada Geese Crosses at City Park in Denver

I submitted via Bird Log NA on Saturday, but now looking at the images I
see more orange on the legs and feet than I would expect. Is this perhaps
a cross with a domestic goose. If someone smarter than I has a minute,

The starred warblers have also been seen in December in the Pueblo Area.

Fremont County November warblers, that haven't been seen in Pueblo in Nov:
21. American Redstart
22. Worm-eating

Pueblo also had the following three species, in extreme late October.
Chestnut-sided
Black-throated Blue
Hooded

So, to answer Dave Leatherman's question, on what is next this November, well
pretty much anything.  Pueblo has been a good warbler location over the years
in the Nov and Dec.
