[cobirds] Canon City Winter/Pacific Wrens
Having observed this bird with Brandon on 12/21 my thoughts are leaning more towards Pacific Wren than Winter and call was definitely Pacific Wren. I didn't get a good look at the throat, but it didn't appear to be whitish. In 40+ years of off and on birding I've seen several Winter Wrens and this bird was noticeably darker/distinct from these. Brandon's photo (taken in overcast conditions) seems to show a lighter throat on this bird, but certainly not a lighter "bib" blending into light brown like many Winter Wrens. This bird's breast seemed darker than Winter Wren. Now, comparing Brandon's 12/21 photos with Ebird photos could lead one to believe there's a Winter Wren "grandparent" in this bird's ancestry. And, with Brandon also questioning the bird, I moved my report on Ebird into the "Pacific/Winter Wren" catagory just to err on the safe side. There was a discussion about this time a year ago of a similar bird that was observed at Walden Ponds. I believe it was decided by most the bird was a Winter Wren. I believe also someone theorized the existence of a "tweener" population of Rocky Mountain individuals with characteristics of both Pacific and Winter which sounds plausible. Unlike the Walden Ponds observations, the Canon City observations are complicated by at least two other Stub-tailed Wrens in the immediate area. Comments? [cobirds] Rosy-Finches - Golden - Don't know
Birders, I've been in New Mexico for the last week and when I got home this afternoon the elk had dismantled the feeding stations so I don't have any idea if the finches were here today. I will check tomorrow and post yea or nay. them -- Ira Sanders Golden, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Rosy-Finches, Eastern Fremont Co.
This morning I was walking along CR 120 south of Penrose when a flock of four or five dozen Rosy-Finches landed on the limestone bluff next to the road. All of the ones I could identify were Gray-crowned Rosy-finches. Later on at home, looking over some group photos of the flock, I only found Gray-crowns. The flock stayed along the road for about 20 mins., then took off south toward the river. My location was on CR 120 about two miles west of the Pueblo Co. line, just west of the bridge over "Ranger Creek". [cobirds] Pine Warber/Denver West Office Park (Jeffco)
This afternoon (3pm) I was finally able to locate the sneaky Pine Warbler at Denver West. The bird was associating with a mixed flock of Bushtits and others in the center of the trapezoid formed by buildings 18, 19, 6 and 7. After a pair fruitless attempts, I somehow managed to find the bird within a minute of my arrival. A trend of either seeing the bird quickly or not at all seems to be establishing itself. A Prairie Falcon was on a lightpost just outside of the complex. South Platte Reservoir had continuing Thayer's, Herring, Ring-billed, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, but I was unable to pull a Glock, Mew, or anything else from the flock. Photos of the PiWa (not as good as Chavez's) have been posted to my Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/106200063@N05/16095649958/in/photostream/ Alec Hopping Littleton, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
