[cobirds] Re: Jaegers Chatfield SP

2018-09-12 Thread Santi Tabares Erices
Refound all 3 jaegers today at 7:00 pm. Watched them for about 15 minutes
from the North Boat Launch area. When first found, two were in water
together with the third somewhat nearby and were later seen all flying
together for quite some time.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/12/18

2018-09-12 Thread Meredith . McBurney
This is the first time I can remember when hot temperatures did not seem to
have much impact on bird numbers - even with an early close of many nets
(those most in the sun) we managed to catch 65 new birds. Wilson's
Warblers, not surprisingly, continue to dominate:

Downy Woodpecker 2
Western Wood-pewee 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 4
Townsend's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 43
Western Tanager 1
Spotted Towhee 1 (FOS, and a very young bird)
Chipping Sparrow 3
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

We are open 6 days a week (closed Monday), weather permitting through
October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the
station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30, earlier this week
because of the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The
best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and
Sundays.

Come visit!

Re: [cobirds] Kinney Trail in Golden

2018-09-12 Thread Joe Roller
JoAnn,
The eBird hotspot named "Kinney Run Trail" is indeed an important birding
area in Golden,
with 96 species of birds seen there in the past few years, since records
have been kept.
This represents a great many sightings of individual birds and is a
reflection of the rich
avifauna of the area.
To close this to pedestrian traffic would be a shame from that point of
view.
However, safety first and if the hikers and birders are in danger from
speeding mountain bikes,
it might be reasonable. The other solution would be to close it to cyclists!

I would encourage birders to try this trail and submit checklists to eBird
before it's too late.

Please let me know if I can help in any way. Gerald Baines has been the
most active birder there
and knows the area well.
Thanks for your interest, JoAnn, on behalf of Evergreen Audubon.

[cobirds] Chatfield Jaeger behavior

2018-09-12 Thread Robert Raker
Thanks to the heads up from Myron Gerhard's sighting on Sept 8th, I had the
opportunity to get pics from the water on Sept 9th of the three juvenile
Jaegers. See pics in my ebird report below.

I was surprised to see the Parasitic and Long-tailed Jaegers hanging out
together in such close proximity for such an extended time. They appeared
quite comfortable and unperturbed by each others presence. Their behavior
was more typical of a family unit than separate species!

I'm wondering if anyone with more experience can elucidate on the group
behavior of these two bird species and whether this is typical or unusual.

Thanks! Rob

Is anyone familiar with birding on Kinney Run Trail and Open Space in Golden?
It is listed as an e-bird hotspot. Apparently the city of Golden wants to turn
it into a mountain biking park and trail. Some birders have contacted me to
help protest it on behalf of Evergreen Audubon. Please let us know if you
consider this an "important " birding area.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report Chico Basin Ranch - 9/12/18

2018-09-12 Thread Kim Geissler
I had to close nets a little early today because of high winds, so I caught
a few less birds than usual. I banded 37 birds of 8 species, including the
season's first Golden-crowned Kinglet, which is not a very common capture
at the station. I also had 2 recaptured birds, a Brown Thrasher and a
Spotted Towhee.

Here is the summary of newly banded birds for the day:
Wilson's Warbler: 23
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 3
Orange-crowned Warbler: 4
Golden-crowned Kinglet: 1
Chipping Sparrow: 1
Lincoln's Sparrow: 1
Gray Catbird: 2
Brown Thrasher: 2

You are welcome to visit the banding station. I'll be banding through the
first week of October and nets will be open 6 days a week (Monday through
Saturday). This week I am opening nets at 6:40 and banding until 11:40,
weather permitting.
