[cobirds] late report/documentation/hawks+wind Sunday10/11 Arapahoe

2020-10-13 Thread Karl Stecher Jr.

During the wind blasting front on Sunday 10/11, my daughter was driving
north on Parker Road. Just past the Douglas/Arapahoe county line she spied
a ferruginous hawk on a telephone pole. Then more hawks...nine in all.
...besides the ferruginous, there was one Swainson's and two red-tails. At
that time (2PM) she saw a large swirling wind over Cherry Creek reservoir.
I couldn't go until 4. As I drove south on Parker, to the county line, I
saw nothing but starlings. However, on the way northbound, a peregrine
flew left to right just in front of my car. altitude about three feet
higher than the car.

[cobirds] Red Phalarope, Lagerman Res., Boulder Cty, 10/13

2020-10-13 Thread Thomas Heinrich
Cobirders,
This afternoon I found a couple of phalaropes at Lagerman, one Red-necked and
the other looking a lot like a Red.

Side by side comparisons were especially useful in analyzing the markings to
support the ID of the Red Phalarope, as were discussions with friends and
fellow birders. Of note were the distinctly different bills (one needle thin,
and sharp pointed, the other thick and blunt, like a straw), streaked colorful
back vs. a plain solid gray back, overall size —the RN being smaller, daintier,
thinner & slightly longer-necked, the Red bulkier, shorter neck, and visibly
larger.

It was also interesting to observe the differences in movement and feeding, the
Red-necked generally more active, almost hyper, more spinning, riding fairly
low in the water, whereas the Red was slower, more deliberate in feeding, and
riding higher, seemingly more buoyant in the water.

Photos and many reports have been submitted to eBIrd.

I hope the two stick around for others to enjoy the side by side comparison.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy fall fundraiser

2020-10-13 Thread Nathan Pieplow
Hello all,

I imagine most of you are familiar with the Bird Conservancy of the
Rockies. Based in Colorado, it's the region's largest homegrown
bird-focused nonprofit. Here are some of the many things that the Bird
Conservancy does:

   - runs some of the largest and most rigorous bird monitoring efforts in
the nation, now throughout the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin regions and
   from the Northern Great Plains to northern Mexico;
   - works closely with private landowners, especially agricultural
producers, to make sure that those landowners can meet their economic needs
   while benefiting birds and the environment in general;
   - spearheads on-the-ground conservation of North American grassland
   birds, our most threatened cohort of species;
   - runs banding stations where young children get to see birds up close
   and personal, often for the first time in their lives;
   - runs summer camps where young people can grow and share their love of
   birds and nature.

As you know, 2020 has been a difficult year in the non-profit sector, and
the Bird Conservancy is hoping for a strong fall fundraising drive in order
to make up the difference. Thus, I'd like to invite everyone to the online
fall fundraiser this Friday evening at 6:00 PM. Details at this link:

https://birdconservancy.org/vision2020

This year has been rough for many people; let's create a bright spot.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 10/12-13

2020-10-13 Thread Brandon
Yesterday, I saw a "Western" Palm Warbler in the eastern part of the Osprey
Picnic Area, on the north side of the Arkansas River, below Pueblo
Reservoir dam. I went back there this morning, and there were two
"Western" Palm Warblers and a Blue-headed Vireo. Other highlights
yesterday along the river, White-throated Sparrow, a Townsend's Warbler,
and a Virginia's Warbler.

Pueblo Reservoir scoping out from Sailboard launching area yesterday,
breeding plumage Red-throated Loon, 2 winter plumage Common Loons, and 2
juvenile Sabine's Gull. Today, when I scope from this location I saw one
Sabine's Gull, I didn't pick out any loons.

Looking forward to the Wednesday night's cold front, hopefully Thursday's
drop in temperatures and NE winds will bring a lot of interesting birds.

I've also noticed that eBird's location pages have been more than 24 hours
out of date for several weeks now. They're often more than 40 hours out of
date. It's made my morning perusal of eBird far less useful. I used to
check Boulder County's eBird page every morning to see what was being
seen. I hope eBird can get back to updating faster.

BTW, the delay seems to be the same for eBird pages for all US areas. I've
tried viewing several counties and states, and they all seem to be 30-40
hours out of date.

I'm able to access every portion of eBird.org I just tried (online/app

[cobirds] Re: Trouble with eBird?

2020-10-13 Thread Caleb A
Hi Susan!
It appears that the ebird.org site is down across the United States. I'm
not entirely sure if they're doing site maintenance, or if there's a bigger
issue that they're trying to sort out at the moment. I guess we'll have to
sit tight and see what happens.

[cobirds] Here are the Rules of the Road for posting to COBirds, including photos:

2020-10-13 Thread Jane B
 https://cobirds.org/CFO.aspx?id=25

Here's part of it:
COBirds does not allow any file including pictures to be attached to your
message because viruses are spread through attachments.

If you add photos to your eBird posting, you can add the link to your post
on your email to COBirds.

[cobirds] Another New Yard (Mountain) Bird and American Pipit/Weld

2020-10-13 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

We had two Steller's Jay #139 drop in the yard on Saturday morning. They
were mobbing our neighborhood Cooper's Hawk with five Blue Jay. Cooper's
flew off. All jays stuck around most of the morning.

Sunday, I had 16 American Pipit at the Weld CR 84 marsh (south of Crom
Lake). Also, Horned Grebe (2) at Crom Lake. Two dozen Long-billed Dowitcher
at Weld CR 61/74 ponds. Three Mute Swans F Street gravel ponds in Greeley
(east of 35th Ave).

Photos up later this morning at below address.

Re: [cobirds] Sharing Photos

Diana, are you possibly one of the managers or owners of this Google
group? It does appear that the settings of the new Google groups allows
for "owners", "managers", and "members" of groups to have different
permission levels for the attaching of files (such as photos.) I wonder if
this is why I (and probably others) are not able to currently include a
photo in our posts since we are at the "member" level?

[cobirds] Posting photos?

2020-10-13 Thread Carl Bendorf
Following up on another recent post, I'm having a problem in trying to
include a photo here to the group. As I type this, there is not a "photo"
attachment option down at the bottom where the other formatting options
show up. I just checked another Google group to which I belong and there
is a photo button but here in COBIRDS, it's missing.

Is this perhaps an option that can be set by the administrators of this
group--to include the photo attachment button? It's not a problem with my
browser because, as I said, it's present in my other Google groups using
this same browser, etc.

Thanks,

Carl Bendorf
