Re: [cobirds] Bird ID help request

2023-08-28 Thread Bill Kosar

I'd like to hear other comments on Mary Kay's observations. I think this
bird is too small to be a western tanager, it is only about 5.5 inches
long. It's bill is actually relatively dark but appears light due to the
bright sun on it. I stared at the pics for a while and still think it is a
lesser goldfinch based on its bill shape and the location of its right eye
relative to the bill. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of its back.

2023-08-26 Thread Bill Kosar
Thanks for all of the replies on my bird ID question. The results were:

Bird #1 5 people thought it was an orchard oriole, 2 a goldfinch and 1 a
female western tanager. Another picture that I did not post shows the wing
stripes of the oriole so I think this ID is correct.
Bird #2 Everyone agreed it is a pine siskin
Bird #3 Everyone (except me initially!) agreed it was a rufous
hummingbird, probably juvenile. After a little more research I also agree
with this ID

Thanks for all of the responses!

[cobirds] Interesting El paso county birds (BCNH and ibis)

2023-04-30 Thread Bill Kosar
I did some looking around Fountain today and in addition the many
regulars I saw some ibis in the southeast corner of the Kane and Link road
intersection. Flood irrigation of the surrounding fields seems to be just
getting started so they should be around for a couple of days. I suspect
most or all of them were white-faced, they were too far away to see well.

There was a Black crowned night heron on the east side of the large
Rice's pond at Fountain creek nature center. Also a pair of pelicans.

[cobirds] Location of winter wren in Colorado Springs (El Paso county)

2022-03-01 Thread Bill Kosar
I tried to find the winter wren today based on the GPS coordinates reported
in ebird and the comments about it being near a culvert. The published GPS
coordinates point to spot in the middle of the BMX track that is under
construction in Rampart Park so I don't think that is where people have
been seeing/hearing the wren. I looked at several culvert locations around
the area but I am not sure I looked at the right spot but I saw and heard
nothing.

I would appreciate it if someone could provide some more explicit details
about where they saw the wren (maybe some better GPS info)

Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak possible injury (Huerfano Co)

2021-05-31 Thread Bill Kosar
>From a forensic perspective I took pictures off the bird at 12:19 PM today
(I cross-checked my camera's clock to be sure this time is exactly correct)
and there was no evidence of this blood (?) at that time. I cannot tell
what time Carolyn's pictures were actually taken at based on the .jpg info
I can see in her posted shots, we only know when she posted them. So
something happened early this afternoon.

[cobirds] Common or Chihuahuan Raven?

2009-12-14 Thread BILL KOSAR

I have debated about this bird for a week. I saw it in an open prairie region
east of Big Johnson reservoir in Colorado Springs. Please send me your opinion.

[cobirds] Pacific or common loons (?)

2009-11-23 Thread BILL KOSAR

I saw these loons at Big Johnson Reservoir today and I think they are Pacific
loons.

Thanks in advance for any comments clarifying whether they are Pacific or
common loons
