Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak possible injury (Huerfano Co)
I was fortunate to see the yellow grosbeak at around 5:30pm today. He flew in for a few minutes to eat some seed put out on the ground to the left of the deck below the feeder. He limped when he needed to adjust his position, and often kept his right foot off of the ground. It does indeed appear to be injured. I wonder if this would normally prevent him from mating? [cobirds] Continuing saga: Black-capped chickadee and red-breasted nuthatch; Littleton
Today the black-capped chickadee appeared an hour later (12 noon instead of 11), and worked on the limb cavity for about 6 minutes. You could see it taking out pieces of tree and dropping it to the ground. No nuthatches showed up but when a male house finch flew into the tree about 10 feet away and started singing, the black-capped chickadee left. The house finch has done quite a lot of singing from this tree since then on and off and as of an hour later, the chickadee hasn't returned. Maybe tomorrow? *DuWayne Worthington* *Science Teaching Faculty* *Valor Christian High School* *Influence through Excellence* *3775 Grace Blvd.* *Highlands Ranch, CO 80126* *303-471-3000 x 3278* *www.govalor.com <http://www.govalor.com/>* -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Chickadees and nuthatches; Littleton
One of the chickadees looked like it was trying to excavate a cavity on the back of a broken branch in a large tree by the house. It was working on it for about 5 minutes. I could see pieces of tree falling to the ground. The mate was nearby hunting food. Then two nuthatches came flying into the same tree and immediately went over to the cavity. The chickadee flew to a neighboring branch and watched the nuthatch while it was investigating the area the chickadee was working on. After a few seconds, the nuthatch flew to another part of the tree and worked the trunk and branches for the next 5-10 minutes. The chickadee that was working on excavating a cavity then turned and flew away across the street. I'm wondering if it gave up on that location for a nest or if it will be back. *DuWayne Worthington* *Science Teaching Faculty* *Valor Christian High School* *Influence through Excellence* *3775 Grace Blvd.* *Highlands Ranch, CO 80126* *303-471-3000 x 3278* *www.govalor.com <http://www.govalor.com/>* -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] A goose trifecta - Akron -Washington County

Re: [cobirds] Common Redpoll at feeder, Boulder County. Birders welcome.
Common redpoll spotted this morning at 10:15am in the same backyard as before. It hopped onto the long feeder on the left, then flew up to the high fence around the jacuzzi. I went to get another birder who had just left, but when we got back, it was gone. I waited for another 15-20 minutes but didn't see it again. There is another big feeder next door to the east that the birds go back and forth between soit could be spending time over there as well. There is a large flock of american goldfinches of about 30-40 birds as well as oregon juncos and house finches going back and forth. *DuWayne Worthington* *Science Teaching Faculty* *Valor Christian High School* *Influence through Excellence* *3775 Grace Blvd.* *Highlands Ranch, CO 80126* *303-471-3000 x 3278* *www.govalor.com <http://www.govalor.com/>* On Fri, Dec 11, 2020 at 10:30 AM Megan Jones Patterson wrote: > We've had a Common Redpoll coming to our feeder on and off for about the > last 40 minutes. The common black hawk is still present at lake Manitou outside of Woodland Park as of 5:30 pm today (Thursday). [cobirds] Tucker Gulch- 9 warblers
The gulch that keeps on giving! Warblers galore! This morning produced yellow-rumped warblers (of course), Northern waterthrush, prothonotory warbler, golden-winged warbler, female hooded warbler and nashville warbler, as well as black-headed and rose-breasted Grosbeaks, western tanagers, brown thrasher and lazuli bunting. A very birdy day! If you add warblers from a few days ago, you can include black poll warbler warbler, macgillvray Warbler, and magnolia warbler. Nine amazing warblers from one gulch in half a week! After coming back from an essential service trip, stopped off to look for the widgeon with no luck. There was already a white truck there (hunters?) that may have scared it away. At another pond further west, though, ran into a flock of greater white-fronted geese! I counted 112 of them. Re: [cobirds] Red-throated Loon still around (Adams)
The red throated loon is still in the same place right now. (10:50am) It is on the western third of the pond across the street from Elaine T Valente open space on 104th. It has its bill on its back and is napping. Thanks Chris! [cobirds] Pueblo birds continuing
This morning between 8:30 am and 9:00, I spotted the red bellied woodpecker by the pavilion next to the coyote grill. It was visiting a bench with bird seed on it at the base of a tree next to the walkway. I also saw two trumpeter swans swimming side by side in the far east Valco pond at 9:00am this morning. I first spotted them while driving down the hill from town just before getting to the pond. Beautiful! All black bill with no concavity in it, with the white forehead forming a V. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] Arapahoe Co.: Mew Gull—South Platte Reservoir
I am heading out to the south platte reservoir tonight at 4:30 to look for the Iceland gull that has been seen there. Gulls are very difficult for me to tell the difference between, so I would love some help in finding it as well as the mew gull. Thanks! These would both be lifers for me! *DuWayne Worthington* *Science Teaching Faculty* *Valor Christian High School* *Influence through Excellence* *3775 Grace Blvd.* *Highlands Ranch, CO 80126* *303-471-3000 x 3278* *www.govalor.com <http://www.govalor.com/>* On Mon, Feb 11, 2019 at 6:04 PM Michael Lester wrote: > Hi all, > > Around 5:30pm, just as light was really starting to go, I found an Adult > Mew Gull bathing in the open water.
