[cobirds] Red Crossbills, Loveland, Larimer

2018-02-21 Thread Elaine Coley
Just had about a dozen Red Crossbills (2 adult males, rest females or
immature) picking at the cones of an Austrian Pine behind my nook window.
First time (in 21 years) I've ever seen them around here.

Lincoln's Sparrow is still here -- 2 months to the day since I first
noticed it.

2018-02-14 Thread Elaine Coley
24 Common Mergansers basking in Yard Waste Pond this afternoon.

American Dipper has been on the Big Thompson River here behind my house for
the past 2 weeks or so. First Dipper we have seen since the 2013 flood, so
very welcome. Hope this means the river is recovering after flood and all
the mitigation work last winter.

[cobirds] Goshawk, Loveland, Larimer County

2016-08-20 Thread Elaine Coley
Hi All,

I had (for the first time here) a Northern Goshawk yesterday just before the
rain. It was perched on a branch overlooking the wetlands behind the house for
quite some time. If it wasn't a Goshawk, it was the biggest baddest Cooper's
Hawk that I've ever seen. Had very noticeable supercillium, wide alert eyes,
with a bill exactly like my Sibley's Juvenile Northern Goshawk, and it was
huge. It was brownish, not gray like the adult. And it was very interested in
the bird activity, which quickly stopped. As soon as the thunderstorm started
it darted into cover and I couldn't find it again.

I'm posting this in hopes someone else may have seen it.

Elaine Coley, Loveland, off Rec. Trail halfway between Taft and Wilson (now
called Cottonwood Run by powers that be)

Another male and female Lazuli were also nearby lower bopping around shrubs but
no singing from them.

[cobirds] Yellow Warbler becomes Lazuli Bunting, Larimer County

2016-07-18 Thread Elaine Coley
Hi All,

Birding this morning I heard a Yellow Warbler singing and stopped to see if I
could find it. Finally found the singer perched prominently at the tip of a
dead branch on top of a cottonwood -- a beautiful male Lazuli Bunting. In all
my experiences with Lazulis, both on the West Slope and Front Range, I never
heard one sing like this. I know they have various ways of singing their song,
usually more complicated than this "Sweet Sweet Sweet Sweetdeedeedee. Have
heard many Yellow Warblers, both on W and E slope, and was so sure that's what
I was hearing. Surprise surprise! Isn't birding great!

Anyone else heard a Lazuli sing this song?

Hi All,
Don't know if this is worthwhile or not, but I've had 2 Lincoln's Sparrows off

dogwood bush. It's been a while since I've had them around here -- actually
since the 2013 flood on the Big Thompson. They are pretty and dainty for
sparrows.

[cobirds] Townsend's Warblers,Loveland,Larimer Cnty

2015-09-14 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
Between 8:30--9:30 this morning had a beautiful male Townsend's Warbler on the Loveland Rec. Trail between Taft & Wilson just West of Marker 2 (north side of Recycle Center Pond).  Later the female Townsend's joined him.  Also seen:Osprey, lots of Wilson's Warblers, several Yellow-rumped Warblers, few Orange-crowned Warblers, House Wren, Western Wood-peewee, Swainson's Thrush.
By way of info.  This area on ebirds seems to be called Loveland Recycle Center Pond.  BUT our local newspaper advises the area of the trail between Taft and Wilson has now been named Cottonwood Run.  So, the question is what name shall I use???
Also, last few days many Turkey Vultures have been circling above the pond.  Today not one TV was seen.

[cobirds] Indigo Bunting +, Loveland,Larimer

Hi All,
Rare for me was a beautiful male Indigo Bunting and what looked like a female Lazuli Bunting in a dogwood bush and under it where I feed seed on North side of my house a little bit ago. Also around were lots of flycatchers, the only one of which I could identify well was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. Think one was a Cordilleran. Bird song all this morning was fantastic.

[cobirds] Broad-winged Hawks, Loveland, Larimer

2015-05-11 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
Have had Broad-winged Hawks now and then for several years overhead here. However, yesterday around 1 p.m. had 2 soaring above (not going from point A to point B).They both are dark morph adults. Today had 2 soaring above and one that looked like a juvenile (maybe 1st year) perched in a tree near the wetlands back of my house underneath the soaring adults at 8:30 a.m.
This may not be of interest, but after reading my CO Breeding Bird Atlas it looks like they haven't been confirmed as breeding here of late. So I'm posting in case it is of interest. They can probably best be seen around Marker No. 3 on the Loveland Big Thompson River trail, west of Taft. The underpass under Taft is closed due to high water.
If further info. is needed, feel free to call 970-635-9095.

Have a White-throated Sparrow ground feeding with regulars in my yard this afternoon. This one, for a change, is NOT the tan form but a lovely white and black striped with yellow lores not shy of eating alongside a squirrel.

[cobirds] E. Phoebe, Larimer County, has his Sweetheart

2014-04-11 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
The Eastern Phoebe by the diversion dam on the Loveland Rec. Trail has company now! We're so glad to see them back. Same as last year, the 2nd to arrive has a belly a bit more yellowish. Also on the trail this morning were a pair of Common Mergansers preening and resting at the base of a new (since the flood) stump on the Yard Waste Pond just SW of Marker 2.
Last evening I had a Swamp Sparrow under the dogwood bush on the North side of my house. This is only the 2nd Swamp Sparrow I've seen along here in 17 years.
The White-throated Sparrow is still here since mid November and, much to my disappointment, hasn't been singing.

Hi All,
AFTER THE FLOOD and drastic change of habitat we worried if the birds would come. Well, we've had a White-throated Sparrow (tan type) ground feeding with the juncos for about aweek.
Today had what appeared to be a female 1st winter Rose-breasted Grosbeak (pale bill, bright wingbars) looking around the feeding area and hanging peanut feeder. What a surprise!
NOTE: Haven't seen a Song Sparrow since the flood, and regularly used to have them all year.

[cobirds] Grosbeak misidentification

2013-11-22 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
I may have misidentified that Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Got a picture of a Grosbeak that looked different and came later. The later one Nick Komar kindly ID'd from a picture as a female Evening Grosbeak. Thanks, Nick! This is a first-time in my backyard.

[cobirds] FOS White-crowned SP OR Junco

2013-10-02 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
After the flood (75' from house and major change of Big Thompson River area habitat) we were happy to see about 5 White-crowned Sparrows and 1 Oregon Junco feeding on the ground with our House Finches and Sparrows this morning. We had been worried about the lack of bird activity around here lately.

[cobirds] Rec Trail East of Wilson Ave., Loveland, Larimer County

2013-04-18 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
Between 3 and 5 this afternoon Rec Trail was very active. Seems to be good right after bad weather. Heard but couldn't find SANDHILL CRANES. Saw lots of loud Crows, Ravens, Gulls (lots of Franklin's and some I couldn't ID), MOUNTAIN and WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, 2 WHITE-FACED IBIS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, SONG SPARROWS, pair of COMMON MERGANSERS.Four bull elk meandering around. All the other usual suspects were there. It was noisy, active and wonderful!

[cobirds] Redpolls @ Discovery Museum, Larimer

2012-12-28 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
As of yesterday morning there were Redpolls coming to the Discovery Museum's backyard feeders in Ft. Collins. They can be viewed from INSIDE the back glass doors or windows. While Jim Thompson and I were there a Brown Creeper flew erratically into the back door and took quite a few minutes to revive itself on the cement outside the door and did finally fly off.
FYI, Wildbirds Unlimited in Ft. Collins supplied the feeders and food and Discovery gal takes care of them. Above and Beyond...!

[cobirds] Steller's Jay, Loveland, Larimer

2012-10-19 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi all,
Had a Steller's Jay (Interior West type with white marks) on the ground with White-crowned Sparrows and Juncos eating mixed seed beside my house today at midday. An Eurasian-collared Dove dove in and chased him off after a good while of good looks. This is only the second time I've had one down here between Wilson and Taft south of the rec. trail. The Dipper is back under the Taft bridge -- a bit early this year. Also a couple of Mountain Chickadees have been around for a while.

A large flock of Sandhill Cranes just flew over my house in SW Loveland near the Big Thompson River trail between Wilson andTaft, flying due south and craakling as they were flying. What a sight and sound -- something I've missed since we moved here from Montrose!

[cobirds] Good Mixed Flocks Larimer

2012-09-26 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
I couldn't find Rachel Hopper's Yellow-throated Warbler, but I've had a few real good mixed flocks along the trail between Taft and Wilson in Loveland the last couple of days. The Woodbine (Virginia Creeper) has good berries and so do the Russian Olives.
Here's a list of what I've seen: Quite a few immature and adult White-crowned Sparrows, several Spotted Towhees, a few Mountain Chickadees (early), 2 different flycatchers (unable to ID), Brown Creeper, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, more than one Plumbeous Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Wilson's, Orange-crowned, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Western Wood-Peewee, Bushtits, Song Sparrows, Cedar Waxwings, White-breasted Nuthatch, and first-time I've seen on the trail a Fox Sparrow (altivagans type). the Fox SP was very large and perched quite near a Song SP, so difference was easy to see. Regulars were also quite showy -- Blue Jays, gobs of Robins, Common Grackles, Red-wing Blackbirds, Starlings, Flickers, Black-capped Chickadees, etc.
Also, has anyone else seen a Blue Jay hawking insects?
And there was a raptor being chased by Red-wing Blackbirds - - it flew like a kite or falcon, mostly dark, but had very bright broad white along the outer edges of tail, seemed a bit stubbier than a Peregrine -- any ideas?

[cobirds] Summer Tanager, Larimer County

2011-08-09 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
There was a Summer Tanager (not adult male) on the Big Thompson Rec. Trail in Loveland East of Wilson Ave.. First time I've seen one on this trail. I tried to make it a Western Tanager (common here in spring and late summer), but the big light-colored bill and general look and coloring wouldn't match up.
For those of you who know the trail spots, this was on the WSW side of "seis", just W of "Lone Cottonwood" and the trash barrel about 9:30 a.m.

[cobirds] Loveland Rec. Trail, Larimer County

2011-05-05 Thread Elaine Coley

 Hi All,
Blue-headed Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Perigrine Falcon soaring with Red-tail Hawk, 1 Junco still, few White-crowned Sparrows still, groups of Yellow-rumped Warblers, couple Orange-crowned Warblers and a couple of House Wrens between Taft and Wilson.
More water in river above diversion dam so the 2 Solitary Sandpipers moved on. Osprey flyby almost every morning.
Otherwise, except for Robins, Mourning Doves and Meadowlarks singing, fairly quiet and just the regulars.

[cobirds] E. Phoebe, Loveland, Larimer

2010-04-28 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
An (the) Eastern Phoebe was at the diversion dam this morning calling beautifully. Hadn't seen it for several days since the pair of Barn Swallows returned there.
This morning the Barn Swallows were swooping the Phoebe, but it stood its place on the dam fence and finally swooped after them.
A few years ago when the Black Phoebe and hybrid E/Black were around, they left after the Barn Swallows returned. We'll see if this one can "win" the area this time.

[cobirds] Lincoln's SP Yellow-rumps

Hi All,
First of season Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Lincoln's Sparrow on Big Thompson river trail between Wilson and Taft this morning. Also 1 Double-crested Cormorant in the usual Cottonwood trees, even after all that house-building cleared out the really good trees (for those of you bemoaning the take-out of the trees on the North side of the river for one house, like me).
Good birding,

[cobirds] Winter Wren, Loveland, Larimer

2010-04-08 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
Had a pretty Winter Wren (NOT Pacific) on the Big Thompson River trail this morning bobbing around some old downed logs about a chip shot away from the river itself. Gave very good looks and sang (not the angry chatter) when I wasn't in its sight.
It's a new trail-list bird for me. I went back 1 1/4 hr. later and couldn't refind or hear it.
If anyone wants specific directions, contact me directly, as it's a little complicated to explain simply. Between marker 2 and 3, though. Lots of other spring-singing birds around, but nothing else of real note.

[cobirds] Harris-hunting Sharpies

Hi Cobirders,

My granddaughter and I heard loud chirping and hollering this evening, and she
looked up and we saw a young raptor and were able to identify it by an adult
flying nearby. It was a very young Osprey.

I've been seeing Ospreys around wilson Ave.  the Big Thompson River often;
however, no one seems to know where the nest might be.

Does anyone know of an Osprey nest in this area? (Nick?) (Cole?)
