[cobirds] Noethern Parula still present, Adams County

2020-12-10 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
The Northern Parula is still present as of 9:30 am at 78th avenue on the S.
Platte River. It is exactly where Patrick O'Driscoll reported it yesterday,
flying between the line of trees near the North Water & Sewer plant and the
trees along the river, south of the parking lot. It is with a small flock of
Black-capped Chickadees and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and it stays high in the
trees.

[cobirds] Swan at Barr Lake, Adams County

2020-12-02 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
.

Today Tim and I braved the 23 degree temperature & scoped Barr Lake at about
8:30 am. Sorry for the late post. Near the flock of 45 Pelicans across the lake
to the west was a swan, swimming alone. It had a small yellow area on its face
in front of the eye, with a black bill, but U vs. V shape could not be
determined at this distance. Probably the yellow area makes it a Tundra Swan,
but I hope others can confirm this. Also of note were at least 24 Bald Eagles,
clustered near one another on the ice in the center.

[cobirds] Massive waves of white-cheeked geese at Barr Lake, Adams county

2020-10-30 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at 10:50 am, about 12 waves of white-cheeked geese came into Barr Lake
from the south. We had previously seen only about 125 Canada Geese on the
reservoir. Each wave was 80 to 100 geese. One lonely Snow Goose was mixed in.
Since the lines were very wavy and disorganized and not v-shaped, we are
suspecting Cackling Geese. Welcome back!

[cobirds] Sandhill crane flyover at Barr Lake, Adams County

2020-02-23 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.

Yesterday Feb. 22 at 8am, three Sandhill Cranes flew over Barr Lake, making

on Feb. 2, but none since then. I wonder if they are the same cranes or just a
coincidence?

[cobirds] Large black-mantled gull at Pelican Point, CCSP, Denver

2019-09-19 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Reply to Steve Rash. Yes, it does look like a Kelp Gull. My husband and I
spent 20 minutes staring at a very dark black-mantled gull through our scope
yesterday around 1pm.He was standing in shallow water, but we saw yellowish
legs when he finally scratched his head. We reported it as a Lesser
Black-backed Gull, but we were very troubled by the complete lack of streaking
on the head and neck and by the very black mantle. It had a pure white head.
Also, the size was about 50% larger than the nearby Ring-billed Gulls, which is
not consistent with a Lesser Black-backed Gull at 21 inches. Sadly, no photos.
Some gull expert needs to go to Pelican Point.

2019-08-13 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
This morning there was a congregation of shorebirds on a mudflat in an almost
empty reservoir between 96th and 104th Avenue on McKay Rd. Many Pelicans,
Cormorants, Avocets, Snowy Egrets, and 2 Great Egrets. Smaller numbers of
Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, and Western
Sandpipers. A Peregrine Falcon was sitting on the western shore watching the
action. An adult Redtail with 2 juveniles was hiding in the grass on the north
shore. To see this, park at Elaine Valente Park and walk east to the bike
path, then south about 1/3 mile on the bike trail along the western shore of
the Platte.

[cobirds] Ross's geese at Frederick Rec Center, Weld County

2018-02-26 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Tim & I visited the reservoir in Frederick at 11:40 am today after reading the
2/24 posting by Bill Kaempfer & were astounded by the number of white-cheeked
geese. We estimated about 8000, and then another 1 or 2000 flew in. They were
on the ice & also in a small area of open water. One Snow Goose was sitting on
the ice when we arrived, and then 2 Ross's geese and 2 Snow Geese(white morph)
flew in with the white-cheeks and stayed near each other. We were sure of the
ID because we could see the grin patch on the larger Snow Geese when all 4 were
in the same binocular field. Quite a spectacle.

[cobirds] Burrowing Owls and security guards, Adams county

2017-03-31 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at 10 am my husband and I got out of our car on 96th Avenue near DIA and
briefly saw 2 Burrowing Owls. We used our spotting scope & we noticed a couple
of oil company trucks not too far away from the burrows. We drove on &
returned about 20 minutes later. At the same spot was a HSS security vehicle,
which pulled up next to us & told us we had to move on. We protested that we
were only birdwatchers, but the woman officer kept yelling until we closed our
windows. She then harassed another car driven by a birder with binocs across
the road. Just a warning! I don't think they have any jurisdiction over the
public highway, but I remain open to education.

[cobirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull at Arsenal, Commerce City

2017-03-02 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
For the first time in a long while, a Lesser Black-backed Gull honored us with
his presence at Lake Ladora on Rocky Mt. Arsenal NWR. It is on the eastern
shore among about 120 Ring-billed Gulls and 3 Herring Gull. On the same lake
are the 2 previously reported Cinnamon Teal.

[cobirds] Cedar Waxwings in south Park Hill, Denver County

2017-02-14 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at 8 am we had the first look at Cedar Waxwings in our yard near Monaco
Blvd & 23rd Avenue. Twelve birds landed in the top of our Siberian Elm and
sunned themselves for about 5 minutes. We have never seen them anywhere in
Park Hill previously, although others may have seen them.

2016-05-18 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
I did not post these yesterday May 17 because I failed to realize how uncommon
these are until I checked on eBirds. There were 9 Black Terns flying over the
lake on the entrance road to St. Vrain SP at about 11am. This is the lake at
the intersection of 119 and Weld CR7.

A male Blackpoll Warbler is feeding in the small trees just west of the new
airport transit line, where a small wetland exists, as of 8:30 am today. Thanks

Plumbeous Vireos, a Common Yellowthroat, and numerous Yellow Warblers in this

[cobirds] Red-necked Phalarope at CR 59 Pond, Weld County

2016-05-10 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at Weld CR 59 pond there were 3 Wilson's Phalaropes accompanied by a
slightly smaller bird with a red neck extending down onto the breast & a
distinct white throat patch and black cap, which we think was a Red-necked
Phalarope. As many as 150 of these were reported from this pond several years
ago by Bill Schmoker, so one may not be so unusual! There were also 3 Marbled
Godwits, Black-necked Stilts, Avocets, Long-billed Dowitchers, and
Yellow-headed Blackbirds.

[cobirds] Pawnee Grasslands; Weld County

2016-04-25 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Amazing weather for a drive on the prairie. At Crow Valley Campground we found
the previously reported Red-bellied Woodpecker excavating a tree. A lone
Orange-crowned Warbler was nearby. On the Birder's Route we almost ran over 5
McCown's Longspurs sitting on the road, then 3 Chestnut-collared Longspurs out
beyond Stop 4. 3 Burrowing Owls were in the prairie dog colony near Stop 4. On
our way up we had more "birds in the road" at Lower Latham where 2 Sandhill
Cranes were courting in the road and vocalizing. There was no other car on the
grassland besides ours, so a birder's dream.

[cobirds] Why did the pine grosbeak eat in the road? Larimer County

2015-07-27 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Yesterday we drove up Fall River Rd. in RMNP, and near the top where the road
levels out we saw 2 male and 1 female pine grosbeak eating something in the
dirt roadbed. (We also saw a male female at Lake Irene, in a tree). Then
returning to our cabin in Allenspark at 8700 ft. elevation we saw 2 females
who were also eating in the middle of a dirt road. This location is where we
have seen a bird in the road in July of the last 2 years, so possibly breeding
nearby. Can anyone suggest what they find to eat? We considered crushed
pinecones, but there are none on the tundra.

[cobirds] Rock wren and Swainson's thrush at Rocky Mt.Arsenal, Adams County

2015-05-10 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at 8 am the birds were warming up on the roads at the Arsenal. At the 90
degree turn of the road inside the bison enclosure was a concrete barrier with
a rock wren sitting on/beside it. Just before the tree with the owlets near the
exit was a Swainson's thrush. Several Say's phoebes and western kingbirds were
present and 4 species of swallows on wires near Lake Ladora. Countless sparrows.

2015-02-17 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at 11 am at Rocky Mt. Arsenal NWR, the nest near the eastern boundary in

them. Also a large flock of redheads and another of canvasbacks are present on

[cobirds] Harris's sparrows at Chatfield Arb, Jefferson County

2014-12-13 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.

[cobirds] Light morph red-tailed hawk at RM Arsenal, Adams County

2014-10-07 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
A few minutes ago Tim I spotted a red-tailed hawk sitting on a pole, then
soaring, at 64th Havana Street on the Rocky Mt. Arsenal NWR. The tail was
quite red, but there was no visible belly band, and its back was extensively
streaked with white. Its head was pale, and the patagial bar was barely
visible. Krider's morph? The rest of the Arsenal had few ducks, but one hooded
merganser has arrived. There were over 30 meadowlarks.

[cobirds] Golden eagle, Rocky Mt Arsenal,Adams County

2014-05-16 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Today at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR we saw an adult golden eagle harassing a
flock of over 300 ring-billed gulls near the Havana Ponds area. He made a
couple passes and then flew away when chased by a brave Swainson's hawk. In the
same vicinity we saw a peregrine falcon fly over the fields, and I am told the
Kingerys also saw him on Wednesday. There are 19 white-faced ibis on the
wetland, but only a couple avocets and 3 spotted sandpipers remain.

[cobirds] Fallout at Rocky Mt. Arsenal NWR

2014-05-12 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
One hour after the snow stopped this morning we drove around the bison loop and
saw uncountable flocks of sparrows and blackbirds. Estimates are 150 chipping
sparrows, 50 vesper, 150 lark sparrows, 100 lark buntings, 15 white-crowned,
and about 3 clay-colored. At least 60 mourning doves were on the ground lining
a dirt road. There were 30 female yellow-headed blackbirds mixed in with about
25 Brewer's blackbirds near the entrance gate. On a small tree near the gate
was a juvenile great horned owl. Quite a spectacle!

Our first time at this location, which has sketchy parking. However, 3 adult and
3 immature bald eagles were perched in a tree about 1/2 mile south on the
trail. Also 30 common goldeneye and two Barrow's. The usual ducks were well
represented,plus 8 ruddy ducks on a distant lake. 2 American pipits,3 killdeer,
a harrier, a double-crested cormorant, and 2 blue herons. We will return!

Among the usual suspects was a lone cinnamon teal male, just north of the
bridge over the S. Platte on 88th.

[cobirds] Correction to Jumbo Reservoir entry yesterday

2012-02-20 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Sorry to make an error in my first-ever posting, but we definitely did not see
a broad-winged hawk at Jumbo reservoir yesterday, just rough-legged hawks.
Don't waste gasoline to see a rarity that is only an error.

[cobirds] Jumbo and Prewitt Reservoirs

2012-02-19 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
My husband Tim and I drove up to see the snow geese that Joey Kellner reported
on Feb.5, and yes, there were uncountable snow and Ross's geese, which he
estimated at 9000. On Red Lion SWA there were several hundred white-faced
geese, with 13 greater white-fronted geese mixed in and 10 snow geese. No
tundra swans were found, but they could be huddled in the middle of 9000 snow
geese! Few gulls out too far to identify with any accuracy. 2 bald eagles
sitting on the ice at Jumbo, and one golden eagle on I-76 approach. Prewitt is
fully frozen, but 2 blue heron flew up, so must have some open water we couldn't
see. Several harriers, ferruginous, and broad-winged hawks were seen around the
Reservoir area.
