[cobirds] large flock of Crows near Florence, Fremont Co.

2010-12-08 Thread Patrick Gould

This afternoon I had a tight knit flock of 200+ American Crows
descend on my yard. Many were sitting in trees, or my fence, while others were
picking things from the grond. My resident flock numbers about 15. 200+ is
the
largest group of crows that i have ever seen in this area in the 5 or so years
that
I have lived here.

[cobirds] I.D.? probable Juv. Rufous-crowned Sparrow 8mssw Florence, Freemont co

2011-09-15 Thread Patrick Gould

Just had what i think was a juv. Rufous-crowned Sparrow in my hand. crown was
solid streakschin white but throat rich brownish, thick line over eye buffy,
belly white, light wing bars not too'noticable. single thin, whisker mark .
line from behind curving down and around brownish, not red. some indication of
streaking on brown throat but not at all distinct. a little larger than
youngchipping sparrows it was with/near. Anything distinctive I should have
looked for to be positive aboutid? I have never found this species in this
area, and I have never seen a very young bird up close. Pat Gould8 mi ssw

[cobirds] 5 nest Say's Phoebes (fremont Co)

2009-04-14 Thread Patrick Gould

hi

Last years 5 nest phoebes have just begun building in the same location
(beneath our back porch roof). They have started two nests about 1 foot apart,
one nest each in the locations of last years nest #4 and last years nest #5.
The successful nest last year was number 1, and the failed nest was, I think,
number 3. This years nests are very near our back door so they may start other
nests farther away before finishing one.

2009-04-20 Thread Patrick Gould

Hi

A female Black-chinned Hummingbird briefly visited my feeder (Pinyon - Juniper
- Blue Grama Grass habitat) this afternoon (4/20/09). My previous early date
is 19 April for a bird that was apparently just moving through. Black-chinned
Hummers that stick around here usually arrive in the last week in April.

Mountain Bluebirds and Say's Phoebes are nest building.

[cobirds] Bewick's Wren nesting in pinyon-juniper of se Fremont Co

2009-05-10 Thread Patrick Gould

Hi

I checked a nest box today that I had not looked into since 4/15 when it was
absolutely bare (used by Juniper Titmouse in '06 and '07, not used in '08).

BIG SURPRISE = It contained a Bewick's Wren sitting on a beautiful nest with 4
eggs!

This appears to be an uncommon find according to the Breeding Bird Atlas.

Also, at least 5 pairs of Mountain Bluebirds are incubating eggs in nest boxes
on my property at this time.

Could someone please tell me what atlas block this location is in (see below)?

[cobirds] Available Banding Equipment

2009-09-01 Thread Patrick Gould

Hi

I can no longer band birds because of my health -

I would like to donate all of my nets (many all sizes including demo nets) and
banding equipment (pretty much everything a bander needs including pliers for
steel bands) to, preferably, a university or college ornithology (or zoology)
department that has ornithology grad students (can be used for bat studies
also). Failing this I could give them to a young ornithologist actively
studying birds (and publishing).

It would be nice if this equipment is used for Colorado Bird Studies.

It might take me a while to pack and ship the stuff or if your in the Florence
(Fremont CO) area you could stop by and pick them up.

The individual who gets the stuff must have valid state and federal banding
permits!

[cobirds] Florence, Fremont Co., Field Sparrow

2009-09-25 Thread Patrick Gould

HI

earlier I had a Field Sparrow visit the food I put on the ground. I got a very
good look with the bird almost filling my scope. It was with Chipping Sparrows
for a good comaprison of bills. About 15 min later two Wild Turkeys moved in
and spent a lot of time cleaning up all the food I put out as well as scaring
off every other bird.

I have had Clay-colored and Brewer's Sparrows as well as Green-tailed Towhees
visiting among the regulars. The Junipers are alive with American Robins.

[cobirds] 5-nest phoebes of Florence

2010-04-24 Thread Patrick Gould

This year the Say's Phoebe pair at my house are busy working on eight (8)
nests! All are in a row along the underside of the roof of my back porch.
Four are fairly substantial while the other four are not too far along. Both
birds appear to be building. One of the substantial nests is in the same spot
that has been used in past years.

[cobirds] 5-8 nest Say's Phoebe Update

2010-05-07 Thread Patrick Gould

well eight is the final number of nests begun by what i think is the male all
by himself. I never saw two birds building at the same time. Nests 1, 7, and
8 are the biggest. Nests 2-6 are about half size. Only nest 8 received a
completed lining. Nest 1 is at the site used last year for this pairs first
nesting.

I checked the nests this morning and: Nest two (no lining) has one egg. Nest
8 has 3 eggs and is probably the nest of final choice.
