[cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes and other Carbondale area birds (mainly Garfield County)
Hi folks A summary of the highlights of the past week, all Garfield County except where noted. Red-naped Sapsucker – Centennial Park – Carbondale. (Sub-adult male?) This bird has taken up residence in the “Yellow-bellied Sapsucker tree”. I have great photos of both birds. Have not seen the Yellow-bellied on any recent visits, whereas the Red-naped is seemingly there “continuously throughout the warmer hours of the day” this week, up to and including today. Barrow’s Goldeneye – 115 (+-5) private ponds, Coryell Ranch – Wed 15th at 5.30pm; 1 fem Tucker’s private pond 19th; upto 15 Roaring Fork River, just downstream of Catherine Store Rd bridge most days Rough-legged Hawk – males all – 1 Carbondale Nature Park daily, a different bird Carbondale Blue Heron Lane Jan 20, a presumed 3rd bird CR103, c2miles N.of Hwy82, Jan19. Merlin – Jan 17 on the power poles on hillside just north of Blue Lake, El Jebel, Eagle County Prairie Falcon 1 as Merlin, Jan 18th, 1 most days Carbondale Nature Park Northern Harrier – 2+ Carbondale Nature Park Golden Eagles 2-3 – all of them mature adults – Missouri Heights/Coulter Creek area (Eagle/Garfield Counties) Bald Eagle 2+ seem to be fewer and fewer in recent winters, despite the river having not much ice American Dipper – all along the Roaring Fork, not singing yet, even on ‘warm’ afternoons Wilson’s Snipe – several locations, Eagle and Garfield Counties – seemingly commoner when there is less ice, like this winter Pinyon Jay – up to 50, occasional in our backyard Lesser Goldfinch – up to 6 in our backyard Rosy-Finches – Snowmass Ski area, Pitkin County, at the on-hill Bird Feeders – up to 50, all Browncaps and Gray-crowned No sign of the 4+ Rusty Blackbirds in Carbondale Nature Park since Christmas Good birding all Best regards Dick Filby Carbondale, Garfield County -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes on the Platte
This morning there were at least six Barrow's Goldeneyes on the Platte River at 88th Ave in Thornton. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes at 88th and the Platte
This afternoon I counted 6 Barrow's Goldeneyes on the Platte River at 88th Ave in Thornton. They were spread out along the river for about a mile south of the 88th Ave bridge. I walked along the dirt path between the river and the reservoir to its east, crossed the railroad bridge, and then returned to the parking lot via the paved bike path on the west side of the river. Other good birds include a single California Gull standing on the frozen reservoir with some Ring-billeds, a raft of Ruddy Ducks on the reservoir, and all three merganser species. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes on Summit and Grand County waters
Yesterday, five observers on a Denver Field Ornithologists field trip (Paul Slingsby, leader) visited the Silverthorne Water Treatment ponds and four Grand County lakes as part of the annual Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Barrow’s Goldeneye count. Barrow’s were found on four of the five bodies of water in nice numbers. At Silverthorne, as reported yesterday, the goldeneyes were not on the front pond of the treatment plant. From behind the treatment plant, they were visible on a private lake north of the treatment plant property. There was nice plumage variation among the 20 birds seen. Along with 10 adult males and 8 adult females, there was one male in eclipse or partial eclipse plumage and one juvenal plumage bird. A stop at Glory Hole Cafe in Hot Sulphur Springs produced no rosy-finches. Windy Gap Reservoir had 10 Barrow’s Goldeneyes, including 5 adult males and 5 birds that appeared to be juveniles/immatures, but may have been females. The light angle was unfavorable; the bills appeared dark but may have had some yellow. On Grand Lake, we had 10 Common Goldeneyes, but no Barrow’s. Shadow Mountain Res had at least 12 Barrow’s, 8 males, 3 females and one juvenile/immature. There were at least 12 Common Goldeneyes as well. The birds were widespread across the lake making distant birds difficult to count. Among the Canada Geese, there were two possible hybrids or partial albinos. The birds were the size of the Canadas with most plumage like the Canada Geese. Exceptions were the necks and heads. On one of the birds, the neck and head were extensively white with traces of black or gray. On the second, the neck was more predominantly black or gray with some white, while the head was predominantly white with some black or gray. Lake Granby yielded the motherload. There was a large raft of Barrow’s Goldeneyes with a few scattered stragglers. We counted 25 males and 24 females, though there may have been more. The birds in the raft were frequently diving almost in unison. With clear skies and no wind, it was our best goldeneye count in many years on this route. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes - Gunnison County
Saturday (Nov 21st) we had a good group of birders search Blue Mesa Reservoir for Barrow's Goldeneyes. There were at least 30 Barrow's found just east of the Hwy 149 bridge. Interestingly, there were only 3 females and the rest were males. Other highlights were many species of ducks, 1 Horned Grebe, 3 Eared Grebes, at least 100 Western Grebes, 3 Wilson's Snipe, 1 Killdeer, and the most gulls I have ever seen on the west slope (California only identified but many were too far to id). Oddest bird was a moose high on a cliff above pretending to be a bighorn sheep where we viewed the Barrow's Goldeneyes! -- Jason Beason Paonia - Delta County -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes Summit County
Visited a few of the Mountain Lakes today. Found lakes near Georgetown, Empire, and Idaho Springs almost completely frozen. Went up to Summit County and found lots of open water. In the Silverthorne area most of the ponds near the Blue River were open. One one of the ponds I was able to locate about 100 American Wigeon, 10 Mallards, 55 Ring-necked Ducks, 30 Lesser Scaup, 20 Gadwall, and 45 Green-winged Teal. The prize was 4 Barrow's Goldeneyes (2 males and 2 females). Most of the male ducks are in, or nearly in, breeding plumage, making the identifications much easier than a month ago. At the Silverthorne Waste Water Treatment Plant, diversity was a bit lower and numbers were modest. However, a "tardy" flock of about 30 Yellow-rumped Warblers was a bit of a surprise. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes - Echo Lake, Clear Creek
Urling and I went up to Echo Lake yesterday (7/27) and found the family of goldeneyes, now down to five ducklings. The conformation of the female's head seems to fit Barrow's fairly well -- at least most of the time but not after she spent some time diving -- so I guess we can't try to claim a first Colorado breeding for the other goldeneye. We also heard and saw some breeders -- Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, Lincoln's & White-crowned sparrows -- and some wanderers: Lark Sparrow, Green-tailed Towhee, and Pygmy Nuthatch, none of which I would expect to breed in that habitat. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes - Parker, Douglas
Andy Spellman, on Jan. 30, discovered a pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes at Twenty-Mile Pond in Parker. I went there today, and the pair persists, even through this cold weather. The ducks occupy a small puddle immediately below the dike, right next to the parking lot -- they offer a fabulous opportunity for close-up views and comparison with Common Goldeneyes (9) and Ring-necked Ducks (2). I noticed that all three species have the same head shape -- the males anyway, even if Mr. Barrow's should not. Mrs. Barrow's has an orangey bill, as she should, and a roundish head, as she should. One of the Commons (if a Common) seems stuck in its molt -- brown head with black and white on the back and sides. Photographers: an opportunity for close-up pictures -- providing we don't scare away the ducks. If you go there, to see or to photograph, I'd suggest walking up to the chain gate and looking from there WITHOUT GOING CLOSER -- without climbing over the chain. They'll fill your field of view from there. Twenty Mile Pond directions: From the main intersection in Parker, go west toward Cherry Creek on Parker Mainstreet; at Twenty-Mile Road, just before Cherry Creek, turn left, and then right into the parking lot. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes, Eagle Co
Hi all, Home from driving 3017 miles round the state... so took a quick visit to Spring Park reservoir this evening.. Water levels have risen very quickly in the past few days and the shorebird habitat will very soon disappear. There were lots of ducks today, including at least 40 Barrow's Goldeneyes, and a lone Western Grebe, 2 Franklin's Gulls and at least 3 Ring-billed Gulls but the only shorebirds I could find were 2 Killdeer. An adult Bald Eagle flew over as I left, scattering the ducks. A reminder: The reservoir has no public access and is only viewable distantly from the road, so a telescope is essential. Back home an Osprey flew over the Roaring Fork river just downvalley of the house. Let's see what the winter storm brings.. [cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneyes at Platte & 88th Ave
Hi folks, Saturday morning there were three Barrow's Goldeneyes present on the Platte, about a half mile south of where it is crossed by 88th Ave in Thornton. I found two hens and one drake. The drake seemed paired up with one hen, as they swam, fed, and dove together. They were feeding immediately next to the two yellow-red-and-white "Danger" signs on the east side of the river, a few hundred yards south of the parking lot. Best views were from the east side of the river, but I also saw them from the west side. You can make a nice walking loop by parking in the lot, walking to the 88th overpass, crossing the river, walking south on the east side of the river, crossing the river by the railroad crossing (not for the dizzy or those afraid of heights, although it's safe), and then walking back to the parking lot along the west side of the river.
