[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow is a delight to my ears, Ken Caryl Valley, JeffCo

2023-04-28 Thread David Suddjian
My yard has been hosting a lovely and confiding White-throated Sparrow
since late on 4/25 through today. He sings each morning in the front yard,
and today he began at 5:43 a.m. and went for a long time. I attached a
couple of recordings on this eBird checklist
He seemed to be in a fuller voice
now, but the first couple of days he was singing *sotto voce. *

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & Ravens - Arapahoe

2023-03-05 Thread Jared Del Rosso
A White-throated Sparrow continues to visit (and then disappear from) my
Centennial yard. This morning, the White-throated chased off Dark-eyed
Juncos around the piles of seed I scattered. This is a reversal of the
mid-winter dynamics. Then, the junco flocks were 2-3 times larger and the
White-throated Sparrow skulked a bit more.

Also in Centennial: Yesterday, I saw a Common Raven on the nest over the
now abandoned Macy's at Streets of Southglenn in Centennial. From my
vantage, I couldn't tell if the Raven was adding to or adjusting the nest
-- or beginning any other sort of nesting activity in it.

Last year, I'm not sure that the nesting was successful, and I was left
wondering if the removal of the Macy's signs (which are right below the
nests) during the spring contributed. In previous years, there have been
mixed results. One year, Rosanne Juergens found a dead Raven stuck in the
building front below the nest. Other years, I've seen fairly large families
of Ravens by summer. Let's hope for that!

Given that there's construction planned for Southglenn, including at the
Macy's building -- but at some unknown date in the future -- it might be
valuable for local birders to occasionally visit the Ravens to take stock,
document activities (corvid and hominin alike), etc. I don't think there's
anything imminent, thankfully, and I heard that the Sears building is the
first to go. (There was a Say's Phoebe nest near the Sear's building last
year.)

Apropos of commercial nestings: One year, Brewer's Blackbirds nested at
Southglenn. I haven't noticed them there regularly, though. They were
divebombing passerby and, so, were hard to miss.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Merlin, Towhees (Arapahoe)

2022-12-17 Thread Jared Del Rosso
Since at least 12/9, a White-throated Sparrow has been joining the other
sparrows to scratch birdseed out of the chokecherries and viburnum that
line my Centennial yard. The White-throated has been fairly vocal, calling
in the morning from conspicuous perches. (Note for Merlin users: the app
identified the call of the White-throated as that of the White-crowned
Sparrow, even as I watched the former give its call.)

This afternoon, while driving, I encountered a small falcon that perched on
one of the transmission towers that run through my neighborhood. I stopped
to look, but didn't have binoculars. The falcon struck me as too darkly
colored to be a Kestrel and perhaps darkly colored enough to be a Taiga
Merlin. By the time I returned home, the bird had flown on. So who knows.
(But in 2017, a Taiga Merlin indeed perched on these towers. In the past,
Peregrines have as well.)

Finally, the number of Spotted Towhees visiting my yard to also scratch for
seed has been impressive. This afternoon, I counted up to seven along one
edge of the yard. A few weeks ago, six were together, ornamenting a bare
chokecherry. This isn't entirely unusual. eBird reminds me that the winter
of 2017-18 brought a similar number through my yard. And I suspect it's
just an outcome of me more consistently tossing seed around my yard,
attracting the neighborhood's many towhees. (I use the waste free type so I
don't end up with patches of millet and safflower.)

No Cassin's Finches yet, though I seem to be surrounded by reports of them.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow at Ken Caryl

2022-09-28 Thread David Suddjian
It was fun to see a hatch year White-throated Sparrow in the front yard today,
with my little White-crowned flock. This is my earliest of several fall records
over 9 seasons. I’m still enjoying several Broad-tailed Hummers in the yard. A
friend and I were noting how these late season hummers shift to less frequent
use of feeders in these last days.

2022-04-30 Thread Guillaume Stordeur
Hi all,
I thought some of you might like to know there's a White-throated Sparrow
hanging around with a group of White-Crowned Sparrows at Barr Lake.
I found them on one of the big white logs on the side of the trail, not far
north from the visitor center bridge, around 1pm today.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow - SW Denver

2022-01-21 Thread Doug Ward
Returned to Denver this week after spending the holidays in North Idaho and
was pleasantly surprised that the adult WHITE-THROATED SPARROW which was
present throughout November and early December is still around today (Fri.,
21 Jan.’22) at our place in southwest Denver (Athmar Park neighborhood,
Denver Co.). We headed north in mid-December, so after six (6) weeks of
empty feeders wasn’t expecting it to be around, and it took a couple of days
for activity to pick up, but seems like we are now back to normal - again, a
very nice surprise. This is a similar experience to the one we had last
Winter with a young Harris’s Sparrow, and as such suspect the White-throat
will stick around through March/April (hope I didn’t just jinks things), so
if you’d like to try for the sparrow for your year list, …, just let me know
separately.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & Paired Swainson's Hawks - Arapahoe

2020-04-21 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This afternoon, while running along the High Line Canal in Centennial, I
heard a singing White-throated Sparrow in the brush. Never saw it, but it
was nearly the complete song...

This evening, while walking my dogs in the neighborhood in Centennial, a
pair of Swainson's Hawks spent time together flying and perched on a
transmission tower. I first noticed a Swainson's in the neighborhood on
Sunday, so was surprised to see a pair so quickly paired.

First of year Brown-headed Cowbirds and a Broad-tailed Hummingbird (male)
on Sunday as well. Local Say's Phoebe calling madly and flying over the

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & siskins - Arapahoe

2019-01-12 Thread Jared Del Rosso
Today (1/12/2019), at deKoevend Park (Arapahoe) were many sledders and dogs
enjoying the snow. Also, at a residential feeder, along the High Line Canal
(east and north of the park) were a duo of Pine Siskin, a Lesser Goldfinch,
and many House Finches. This is the first winter of the three I've spent in
Centennial (small sample, obviously) during which siskin have been
regulars. I've had them in my neighborhood a few times and on both Denver
CBCs.

Also along the trail, but now on the western side of deKoevend, was a
White-throated Sparrow with a flock of juncos. All were near the deKoevend
"Tot Lot," where a drainage ditch brought runoff into the canal. This was
my first White-throated at deKoevend and also my non-towhee/junco/Song-type
sparrow of 2019. A third siskin called from this area, as well.

I took my dogs for a walk through Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in

Lots of robins in the cemetery today. A few Townsend's Solitaires, too.
Nearby, Cedar Waxwings were going for an orange-berried shrub in a yard.
Back home, lots of Dark-eyed Juncos around my feeders (a few blocks away

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow - Centennial (Arapahoe)

2017-10-08 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This afternoon, I spent some time in the back of my yard, looking for a
small song bird that I'd earlier seen up in the trees. That was probably a
House Finch, but the leaf litter below those trees was busy. Moving in
after a Spotted Towhee was a White-throated Sparrow, both scratching around
for bird seed. This was a new yard bird for me. And it's an especially
gratifying one, as the White-throated Sparrow is among my favorite birds
for all the singing it does in the woods around my wife's hometown in
northern Minnesota.

Around the yard: My first yard junco of the season stopped by this morning
and a scrub jay has been visiting, along with the magpies and Blue Jays, my
platform feeder for in-shell peanuts. (The scrub jay is now noisily
attacking the cruddy PetSmart suet that I recently purchased and that the
woodpeckers seem to be avoiding.) At one point, it seemed to me that a
magpie was dampening a peanut in my bird bath. At a minimum, it flew from
the platform feeder to the bird bath, put the peanut down in the bath, took
a few drinks, retrieved its food, then flew off. So perhaps it was only at
the water for a drink. I couldn't tell. I've seen crows soften food in
water, but not yet magpies.

[cobirds] white-throated sparrow, Centennial/Arapahoe

2017-04-16 Thread Karl Stecher Jr.
I've had a white-thoated sparrow in my yard since last fall, but have only
seen him about 6 times. Even when the white-crowneds (not many visits from
them...I just don't have a sparrow habitat) eat on the ground, out in the
open, under the feeders, the white-throated will usually hide at the edge
of the yard under shrubs; he will seldom come to the yard center.

After not having seen him for three weeks, I saw him perched on a bush at
yard edge this afternoon. I have watched his tan crown striping progress
to white.

Two bushtits come to the suet feeder about once a week, so they are likely
nesting nearby.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & late Green-tailed Towhee - Marjorie Perry NP (Arapahoe)

2016-11-14 Thread Jared Del Rosso
At the very end of my walk this at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve (Arapahoe
Co.) this afternoon, I heard then briefly saw a White-throated Sparrow
along the High Line Canal on the eastern edge of the preserve. This is the
first of this sparrow that I've seen in my three-mile home circle in the
west Centennial area.

Just a bit further east, I heard some movement in the marsh along the
Greenwood Gulch Trail. I figured it was a mouse or vole that would stay
invisible under the cover of brush and reeds. Or maybe a Song Sparrow. But
I got a few glimpses of a late Green-tailed Towhee instead.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, and yard birds, Jefferson County, CO

2016-10-11 Thread Tina Jones
Had a nice surprise on 10/9 & 10/10, with a Tan-striped, White-throated
Sparrow, showing up with White-crowned Sparrows in my yard. The White-crowned
Sparrows were really aggressive towards the White-throated. I did not see the
White-throated today in my yard.

A couple of days ago I saw some behavior which I thought was interesting. I had
around 5 American Robins arrive in my yard a couple of days ago. They were
bathing and checking the yard out and decided to check the Pyracantha bush out,
for it's berries. I have had nesting Spotted Towhees in my yard this summer.
When the Robins started to feed on the Pyracantha berries, 3 of my permanent
residing Towhees, flew at the Robins, which were in the bush, and the Towhees
continued to fly at and fly after the Robins until they were out of my yard. I
assumed Towhees were not this aggressive. Never assume, right.

Berry shrubs in my yard are really full of fruits this fall, and attracting
Waxwings, Townsend's Solitaire, and American Robin, and Spotted Towhee.

An Orange-crowned Warbler was in my bird bath yesterday and an 'Eastern' Downy
Woodpecker has been hanging around.

Happy Birding !

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow and Broad-winged Hawk - Crow Valley (Weld)

2016-04-27 Thread Jason Beason
Rob Sparks and I birded at Crow Valley campground this morning. A few
migrants were found on this very chilly morning. An impressive number of
Lincoln's Sparrow and Spotted Towhee were present (estimating between
50-100 of each). One adult light-morph Broad-winged Hawk and one
White-throated Sparrow (white striped) were other highlights. For warblers
a few Yellow-rumped (Myrtle and Audubon's) and Orange-crowned were all we
could find. Along Weld county road 65 near Hwy 14 we saw a few Vesper
Sparrows and many McCown's Longspurs.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow,Carbondale; Rosy-Finches, Snowmass etc

2016-01-30 Thread Dick Filby
Hi all

An update from the Roaring Fork Valley as the 'Pineapple Express' knocks on
the door. It's mid 40's F here this morning - a massive change from the
usual single digits (or negative single digits) that we have been waking up
to all month. Rain later today, then three days off/on snow. We'll see.

Today:

Garfield Cty: The White-throated Sparrow is here again today in our
backyard. A Raccoon is out and about - last night it pried open the feed
bin.. Still plenty of Dark-eyed Juncos - of all four expected forms.. no
White-wingeds here!

Eagle Cty: Lewis's Woodpeckers continue to use the poles on the hill behind
the house this morning - present throughout the day most days it seems

Yesterday:

Garfield Cty: A single female Cassin's Finch visited briefly, FOY. In recent
winters they have been very scarce here-about until spring migration

Thursday:

Pitkin Cty: About 100 Rosy-Finches at Snowmass Ski-area at my Sam's Knob
free bird talk.. all three species (one Black), many Gray-crowned, including
Hepburns and many Brown-capped

Also 4 Pine Grosbeaks, several Mountain and a single Black-capped Chickadee,
Steller's Jays, Red-breasted Nuthatch

Higher up we then went in search of White-tailed Ptarmigan - but without
success. We'll try again next Thursday. My wife Denise has seen them twice
recently whilst teaching skiing, and the ski-patrol are seeing them
regularly too.

Wednesday:

Was thrilled to host Dave Leatherman for a few hours birding and then to
hear his talk "What birds eat" at the jointly hosted Roaring Fork Audubon
evening in Carbondale

Pitkin County: In Snowmass we saw plenty of Rosy-Finches (alas no Black),
Evening Grosbeaks, mountain form Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers

Eagle County: Frying Pan river (Basalt to Ruedi) 1 Barrow's Goldeneye male,
1 Common Goldeneye female, several American Dippers, several Bald Eagles.
We missed spotting 5 Bighorn Sheep that were close to town. Lewis's
Woodpecker 1 along the Frying Pan, and another on the power poles behind our
house. Prairie Falcon immature female frequenting the same poles.

Good birding all

Drive safe (if at all !)

Best wishes

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow in Brighton, Adams County

2016-01-04 Thread Douglas Kibbe

Those who remained for the compilation of the Barr Lake CBC know that a
White-throated Sparrow was reported from Brighton.Details on the location were
sketchy, however, as the area was adjacent to an active construction site and
road nomenclature unclear. The bird was first heard by Pablo Quezada, (proving
again that younger ears are better ears) as the team walked west along the new
road alignment for E. Southern Street which will connect Tower Road with S.
Telluride Street. The bird remained concealed in a dense hedgerow on the south
side of the new road alignment approximately 200 yards west of the junction of
Southern St. and Tower Road. We believe the bird (and dozens of house sparrows
and finches) is probably frequenting feeders along La Plata CT. on the north
side of the new alignment. These private feeders can be partially viewed from
the new road alignment but are screened by fencing on the north.Anyone visiting
the site would be advised to use caution in parking and walking since it is an
active highway construction area.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow - Denver Botanic Gardens - Denver

2015-10-16 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, I briefly observed a White-throated Sparrow at Denver Botanic
Gardens. The bird emerged out of the "Birds & Bees Trail" before
disappearing into the center of the Gardens. This was my first sighting of
this bird at the Gardens.

Though by no means rare, I was surprised to see a Belted Kingfisher flying
over the Gardens' several, small bodies of water. A Say's Phoebe was also
around. Dark-eyed Junco & Townsend's Solitaire have been around for several
weeks now. I'm still waiting for a Mountain Chickadee to join them.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, CSR, El Paso Co, Sun.

2015-10-11 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

Banding at Clear Spring Ranch was interesting for about 20 minutes at dawn, but
pretty slow after that. Hoping for some new arrivals with cooler air tomorrow.
In the birds caught early there was a flock of White-crowned Sparrows (all
adult Gambell's), with a hatch-year White-throated Sparrow following along. I
usually band a couple of these every fall at CSR, but this was the first one
for this year. Also of note was an adult female Orange-crowned Warbler of the
more yellow-colored lutescens subspecies, from the Pacific Coast.

Good birding,

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Estes Park yard, Larimer Co., 5/26

2015-05-26 Thread Jim Nelson
As I was getting my second bowl of cereal this morning at our vacation home on
the west side of Estes Park, I glanced out the kitchen door at the back yard
area where we have our bird feeders. I saw a bright bird feeding on the
ground. Realizing it was something different, I grabbed my binoculars and
focused on a very bright White-throated Sparrow. At home in Maryland in late
fall, winter, and early spring, we have lots of them in our back yard. But I
know it is very unusual in Colorado and especially up here. I managed one
documentary photo before it flew off. It has not returned since.

I checked eBird and found only one other record in the Estes Park area, at the
YMCA Camp in October 2010. There is also an eBird report a bit south in
Allenspark, Boulder Co., in November 2012.

It is always nice to get a new state bird in our own back yard.

Another fun observation was a male Hairy Woodpecker that managed to hold on to
a perch on our hummingbird feeder and extract sugar water using its long tongue.

We also have been seeing a melanistic Mountain Chickadee which is fairly dark
gray in the areas that would normally be white.

Hi All,
Have a White-throated Sparrow ground feeding with regulars in my yard this afternoon. This one, for a change, is NOT the tan form but a lovely white and black striped with yellow lores & not shy of eating alongside a squirrel.
A FOS Bullock's Oriole male has been on the river trail for a couple of days along with lots of House Wrens and a few Yellow-rumped Warblers.
If the White-throat sticks around, I'll post tomorrow and anyone who wants to list one is welcome.  Just give us a call first at 970-635-9095.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & Merlin - GJWA - Mesa County

2014-10-28 Thread Mike Henwood
Had a good morning of birding at the Grand Junction Wildlife Area (GJWA),
which is near the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in Grand
Junction.

Lots of sparrows including an adult White-striped White-throated Sparrow, 6
Lincoln's Sparrows, about 20 Chipping Sparrows(down in numbers from several
days ago), plus numerous Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows,
and Dark-eyed Juncos (mostly Pink-sided & Oregon). Spotted Towhees (8)
made the 7th sparrow species.

Also had a Merlin hunting from a perch and on the wing. Observed a young
Cooper's Hawk carrying a junco in his talons.

Also observed an unusual Red-tailed Hawk which I think is a dark morph
Western Red-tailed. Saw the bird circling and the body was uniform black
with a light rufous red tail.
Looked like a Harlan's Hawk with a red tail, so I'm not positive of the ID.

This morning, I had a White-throated Sparrow(tan morph) show up in the
backyard pre-front. He has been here all day eating underneath the niger in
suburban Lakewood. This year it looks like we have an irruption of Pine
Siskens and Red-breasted Nuthatches along the Front Range.
On Friday, I went to see if our Golden-crowned Sparrow has returned again.
The area was totally void of seed so I spread lots of millet and sunflower. It
didn't take long for White-crowns, juncos, towhees and others to show. No
Golden-crowned yet!!

and heard a *White-throated Sparrow* along the shore of Waneka Lake,
Boulder County. The bird was just northwest of the playground. The
White-throated Sparrow exhibits a balanced chromosomal polymorphism; the
bird we observed was of the black-and-white ("bright" or dominant) morph.
In the past week, White-throated Sparrows have been putting on a good show
just to our north; a week ago, Andrew and I (and others) saw at least 4
just outside Cheyenne, Laramie County, and a few days later, birders in
Casper, Natrona County, found at least 12.

Here is a recording of the flight call of the White-throated Sparrow at
Waneka Lake:

http://www.xeno-canto.org/197803

Spectrographically, the flight call of the White-throated Sparrow is
unique, being double-banded, high-pitched, descending, and wavering or
trilled toward the end. This is what the Waneka Lake bird "looked" like:

In the immediate vicinity were Orange-crowned, Wilson's, and Audubon's
warblers. Also, surround-sound Allard's ground crickets. No Sandhill Cranes
for us yet, but we have ears cocked to the sky...

To our surprise, we had a late singing White-throated Sparrow this morning

of usual suspects for this habitat and time of year, including Lazuli

Hi All,

This afternoon, Joel and I found a White-throated Sparrow (tan-striped)
associating with a large junco flock on the northwest edge of the Lyons

Towhees and Western Scrub-Jays in the area.

On CR71N (take Hwy 36 west out of town, turn north at the arched bridge),
we saw a single Pinyon Jay about a half mile from the county line (on the

Hi All,
AFTER THE FLOOD and drastic change of habitat we worried if the birds would come. Well, we've had a White-throated Sparrow (tan type) ground feeding with the juncos for about a week.
Today had what appeared to be a female 1st winter Rose-breasted Grosbeak (pale bill, bright wingbars) looking around the feeding area and hanging peanut feeder.  What a surprise!
NOTE:  Haven't seen a Song Sparrow since the flood, and regularly used to have them all year.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Boulder County, 10/20

2013-10-20 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

This evening, Sunday, Oct. 20, while Andrew and I were out looking for rocks at
Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, we came upon a flock of Zonotrichia
sparrows: mainly White-crowned Sparrows of course, but also a White-throated
Sparrow. The flock was moving around a bit, but the birds were in the general
vicinity of the southwestern corner of Greenlee Preserve, which is the same as
the northwestern corner of Waneka Lake.

I'm guessing they'll spend the night. Or maybe, with the weather letting up as
it is right now, they're already on nocturnal migration.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow still on Canon City Riverwalk

I refound the White-throated Sparrow again this morning several hundred
yards west of the McKenzie parking area for the Canon City Riverwalk. I
finally got a photo of this bird as it scratched through the leaf litter.
I have uploaded the photo to my Birds and Nature

Birding was much slower today as many migrants clearly moved on last
night. No sign of MacGillivray's or Northern Waterthrush I had in that
area yesterday. I did have 2 Virginia's Warblers in that area for a
change (and no Nashvilles).I didn't bird the bluff trail east of Sell's
parking area but did stop briefly at Sell's Lake which was very slow for
land birds also.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, poss. hybrid phoebe & Harlan's Hawk in Canon City area

2012-10-31 Thread SeEtta Moss
Yesterday I enjoyed assemblage of birds on private property in the Canon
City area including a pretty rare for this area White-throated Sparrow, and
I believe a tan-striped form at that. A few hundred feet away was a
Northern Shrike.

One large old cottonwood tree just a hundred yards from the sparrow hosted
an unusually diverse group of birds--2 Eastern Bluebirds (feeding on
insects), 2 Townsend's Solitaires (not common in this deciduous riparian
area), 2 Downy Woodpeckers, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 Lewis' Woodpecker (also
feeding on ? in tree), 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 4 American Goldfinch and
an unusually pugnacious possible hybrid Black X Eastern Phoebe. As large
as the tree was, the phoebe was not interested in sharing the location. I
observed it engage in hostile interactions with at least one of the
bluebirds, both of the solitaires, the poor small nuthatch and a
goldfinch. This is unusual behavior for a phoebe in my experience.

At dusk I spotted a Harlan's Hawk perched in a tree on top of the bluff
above the Arkansas River. So now that I knew the bird was still around
town I went looking today for the Harlan's and found one perched several
hundred feet away-it flew and I got a few photos as it flew past then I
followed it until it disappeared on the prison property.

I have uploaded photos of the phoebe and the White-throated Sparrow
onto my Birds
and Nature blog . I will add photos of
the Harlan's tomorrow.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow - S Platte & 88th, Adams

Nothing much to report from a quick morning of birding at Prospect Park in
Wheat Ridge and also the South Platte by 88th Ave.
I just wanted to note that I had my 7th White-crowned Sparrow in the past
17 days, spanning 4 locations in 3 different counties. This one was in a
flock of White-crowned Sparrows and Song Sparrows just to the southeast of
the parking lot (88th and Colorado). I'm hoping this, along with all the
Harris's Sparrows being seen, bodes well for the upcoming winter season.

At Prospect, I was very excited to see the new boardwalk behind Bass Lake.
Years ago that was a great place to go during spring migration. I can't
wait to visit it then. In fact, I think I'll make a few trips back there
in winter. There are a lot of berries on those bushes and it has always
been a good spot for waxwings.

Hi All,

Today Urling Kingery and I took a Beginning Birder group to Red Rocks
and Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP). Highlights included seeing a White-
throated Sparrow (adult, white-striped morph) among a small flock of
American Tree Sparrows (10-15) along with one 1st year White-crowned
Sparrow. The American Tree Sparrows were the first I have seen this
fall. The sparrows were in the shrubby willows between the parking
lot and lake at the Boat Launch area in BCLP. At Pelican Point in
BCLP we had glimpses of a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. At Red Rocks the
group was able to get good looks at a Prairie Falcon on the backside
of Ship Rock (Upper South Parking Lot) and a Canyon Wren in the small
canyon just south and below the Trading Post feeders.

Nothing out of the ordinary at the feeders behind the Red Rocks
Trading Post - Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow,
juncos, Western Scrub Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, House Finch, &
House Sparrow. Good numbers of Townsend's Solitaires in Red Rocks

I am currently seeing a White-throated Sparrow, a tan-striped adult, in my yard
in Pueblo West. I'm getting very good looks at it from 12-15 feet away through
a window, and was able for a short time to compare it to an immature
White-crowned Sparrow.

Cheers,
Margie Joy

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Dixon Reservoir, Larimer County

2011-09-26 Thread Brad Biggerstaff
There was a White-throated Sparrow (1st winter) at Dixon Reservoir/
Pine Ridge Natural Area in Fort Collins this morning. Although there
was a small flock of White-crowned Sparrows there, too, the White-
throated Sparrow was moving with a pair of Spotted Towhees when I saw
it on the brushy hill on the west side of the natural area at about
9:30.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Louisville, Boulder Co.

2011-04-26 Thread Paula Hansley
Along with all of my White-crowned Sparrows, I just noticed a lovely
White-throated Sparrow! They in my front yard eating millet with a few
doves. Another group of only White-crowned Sparrows is in the back.

[cobirds] white-throated sparrow persists in Paonia, Delta County

2011-01-27 Thread Dennis Garrison

The tan-striped white-throated sparrow that has been at the feeder at the
Forest Service office in Paonia (403 N Rio Grande) for the last couple of weeks
put in two appearances today, both times when I did not have the camera on the
tripod and pointed out the window. It remains very furtive, with appearances
widely scattered and of short duration. However, if anyone wants to see it,
they are welcome to stop by and give it a try. Still trying for a photo...

[cobirds] White-throated sparrow

2010-12-19 Thread Anil Antony
I birded Rocky Mountain Arsenal this morning with my wife and father-
in-law. We had a first winter White-throated Sparrow on the northern
peak of Lake Ladora among a mixed flock of White-crowned and American
Tree Sparrows. The frozen lake kept the majority of waterfowl away,
with the exception of Mallards, a female Common Goldeneye, and two
male Hooded Mergansers. Two Ferruginous Hawks were a highlight for
me, as an eastern-U.S. resident.

Happy birding,
