Andy ... you go boy!!

Publisher Sybex has sent me a bunch of their new releases
for door prizes. I just got the box tonight and will be bringing
them to the meeting.

The two titles I can remember are ... XSLT programming and
Programming SOAP with Java.

I can provide a detailed list tomorrow if anyone is interested.
If not .. just show up .. draw a number and win one of
the hottest titles on the shelves these days.

Good luck to all.

Andy and I are planning a two part presentation on Cocoon 2 in October
but will introduce it at the July Tri JUG meeting.

Re: Cocoon book reviewers wanted

2002-05-22 Thread Conrad F. D';Cruz

Marco,

I disagree very strongly with your philosophy. Open source software
needs as much advertisement and sponsorship from outside the the developer
community. A technology will gain acceptance if it is documented and
placed within easy access of as big a community outside the immediate
developer community. Often times the developers are too busy creating
the system which means user documentation are done at a later time. Most book
projects are started during a period when there is interest in the project
and the documentation is not yet ready.

In addition to the documentation, it helps to have tutorials and regular
textbooks that make it easy for those who are outside the circle
of developers/contributors/testers to come up to speed and adopt the
new technology.

There are not many publishers who would get involved in the opensource
movement if there were no financial rewards in it for them. If there was
that restriction, opensource projects would be the worlds best kept secret!!

It is also true that the authors do not become rich writing the book(s),
so in a way they are contributing to the success of the project too. I am quite

sure there are publishers who in turn make contributions to the ASF in order
to sponsor the movement. Anybody have information on which publishers
sponsor or contribute to the ASF?

My opinions aside ... could any of the developers on the list clarify
Marco's comments below? "Have you received the assent from ASF
or people as Stefano Mazzocchi?" If so is there a formal process to get this
assent?

You don't have to be a member of the developer community to create documentation

on any of the open source projects. Writing a book on it is a form of
documentation and
spreading the word. It is not speculation ... just a form of marketing!! A
well formatted
and presented book from a well know publisher goes a long way in selling the
concept
and product which no HTML or PDF user docs or faqs can achieve.

I too am involved with a group writing a book on Cocoon2 programming which is
due
out in October. Some initial details are at
http://www.netswirl.com/publications.htm
A full web description will be available on the Sybex web site soon.

Robert,

I would not classify myself as a C2 expert by any long shot. I have been
bloodying my nose on Cocoon for about 5 months. Every day is a new
experience ... every step is a new experience.

If I succeed in the install I will send you the steps. If I fail ... you will
hear
about that too!!

By the time I get done mastering Cocoon 2.0 maybe I will become a philosopher
:)

Try this Re: Can't connect to MySQL with Cocoon 2

2002-05-05 Thread Conrad F. D';Cruz

Daniel,

Maybe I don't understand using databases with Cocoon after all. Are you
using
the database for logging? If not why did you define it in the
block in the xconf
file that way (as a logger)?

Here is what I did to get it working (and I got these steps from the
userdocs)

1) I put the mysql.jar file (which contains the mysql jdbc driver) in the
tomcat4.01/lib directory.
I vaguely remember having trouble when it was in the
cocoon/WEB-INF/lib ... and once
it started working I did not complain or spend additional time
researching why it failed
down in the lower directory.

2) I created a jdbc block in the cocoon.xconf file as follows ...

 jdbc:mysql://localhost/mydb
 root

where ... mydb is the (very creative) name I chose for the database.

3) In the webapps/cocoon/WEB-INF directory ... I put the following in
the web.xml file ...

  load-class

org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver

sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver

4) Finally I use the mysql_pool, as follows

In the sitemap ... within the the transformer looks like
this

5) In the content source file for the component I have
this code ...
(note there is more than just this code in the file. In the interest of
space I am just
showing the sql stuff)

  http://apache.org/cocoon/SQL/2.0";>

select * from emp where name='Conrad'

(of course there was a table named emp in mydb ... and it was set up
correctly and
I made sure there was data in that table -- I verified everything from the
"mysql" console)

... then I fired up Cocoon (and prayed for a miracle!!). The C2 gods must
have
been pleased with me that day ... because ... it worked!!!

I, however, did not have a bottle of champagne when I saw the data in my
browser ...
but it worked!! and I was not going to complain about format etc etc.
That is the
topic for another bottle of champagne :)

Hope that helps

Re: Installing cocoon

2002-05-04 Thread Conrad F. D';Cruz

Bobrs,

Yes I struggled with that one too. You will have to download the
cocoon-2.0.2-src.zip
and that's where you will find the missing pieces.

I did have trouble with J2DK1.4 ... so I backtracked to jdk1.3 + tomcat
4.0.1 + cocoon 2.0.1 and everything worked okay.

I am planning on revisiting the 4.0.3 + cocoon 2.0.2 + j2sdk 1.4 install
sometime next week and I will document the steps (and/or frustrations and
email them to you.)

Hope that helps.

Closure and feedback ... Re: Sub sitemap pains

2002-04-26 Thread Conrad F. D';Cruz

Greetings all,

Thank you both .. Vadim and Erwin for pointing me in the right direction.

After careful study of both sitemaps I found the following ...

the sub-sitemap (in vcard) was missing one component

I guess it was cut and paste that proved to be my nemesis ... and also
staring at a monitor for 19 hours at a stretch ...

... I added the missing line in the sitemap ... and everything started
working fine.

One area of confusion is the use of the "*" and "**" ... is it just my
imagination
that * in a sitemap does not mean the same as * in a regular expression
(expands
to match zero or more characters???) ... there used to be a page that
described that
it has moved and I cannot find it.

Anyway ... Cocoon is behaving now and life is good !!

Now it is on to bigger and better (i.e. more complicated) sub-sitemaps

Thanks again ...
Conrad

That's what I started out with and thought I needed the other one.
I went ahead and commented it out as directed.

I just did not want to clutter the message so I only cut and pasted
the pipeline ... and the and the answer is yes ... the main sitemap
in (webapps/cocoon) does have the details of all the components and
the sub sitemap in webapps/cocoon/c2/vcard does have the
minimal list shown above.

Sub sitemap pains

2002-04-25 Thread Conrad F. D';Cruz

Greetings all,

I am trying to solve all the mysteries of the universe ... but I first
wanted to conquer
sub sitemaps!!! and I could use some collective wisdom of this list on
this

I got an example of an XSL and XML working in the main sitemap but
decided
to get elegant and moved the pipeline to the sub sitemap in the
sub-directory.

the directory structure is cocoon --> c2 --> vcard

The main sitemap in /cocoon (pipeline only shown below) now looks like
this:

Note: I have also tried ... src="c2/vcard/"
without the sitemap.xmap explicityly specified

*
the sub sitemap in vcard is shown below

This worked perfectly when the pipeline was in the main sitemap
*

Now in the browser I am getting the following fatal error

type fatal

message Language Exception

description org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Language Exception:
org.apache.cocoon.components.language.LanguageException: Could not load
class for program 'org\apache\cocoon\www\sitemap_xmap' due to a
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.cocoon.www.sitemap_xmap

sender org.apache.cocoon.servlet.CocoonServlet

source Cocoon servlet

request-uri

/cocoon/vcard

path-info

vcard

In the Tomcat shell window I am getting the following exception

java.lang.RuntimeException: Stylesheet directed termination at
org.apache.xalan.transformer.TransformerImpl.run
(TranformerImpl.java:3174) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown source)

**

I have looked at the FAQ and have tried the suggestions from the
userdocs.

I had seen an archived message that suggested to some other person
with the same problem that the problem should be at line 3174 of
sitemap_xmap.java ...
There weren't that many lines in that file and I could not locate
TransformerImpl.java.

Nothing seems to work and I am at my wits end.

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks
Conrad
