Yes, open library implemented it, and, of course, where it doesn't work
is where the data is pretty bad. If you prefer to err on the side of
merging, you can loosen the algorithm's weights. It's based on the
algorithm used for the U Cal union catalog, which was exercised over
about 20 years. Last I was able to ascertain, the data elements are very
similar to the ones used (at least at the time) by WorldCat.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I am working with 2 (or more in

Marcedit but my usage did vary...not much overlap with the control
fields that were available to me. I have a feeling they are a bit
varied. I'm also messing around with marcXimiL a little but I'm
having trouble getting it to output any records at all. I also was
looking at the XC aggregation module but I was having trouble getting
that to work properly as well and the listserv was unresponsive. It
seemed like good software but it required me to set up an OAI harvest
source to allow it to ingest the records and that...well...enough is
enough... I think I will probably need to write something, and at
least that way I know what it will be doing rather than plowing
through software that has little to no support. Please feel free to let me know
of a particular strategy you think might work best in this regard...

If you couldn't get adequate deduping from the control fields available in
MarcEdit deduping, what control fields do you think you need to dedup on? You
can actually specify any arbitrary field and subfield for deduping in MarcEdit.

Shameless (and quite late) plug: I wrote up a

covers several popular reference statistics options. Most have already
been mentioned above.

We used to use a Library Statistics

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, it's super
outdated. It relies on register_globals being on in PHP. Need I say more?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Desk Statistics Software Question

2013-08-22 Thread Kari R Smith
We've looked extensively into the question during the past year; our Reference
Archivist has been soliciting and collecting data on products folks are using,
how well they like them, and what they are using them for. There is also a lot
of discussion on the Reference and Outreach lists on this topic.

Altarama's RefTracker has come out as one product that can be well used by
multiple types of archives/libraries/special collections. It can be hosted or
licensed for local implementation. They have great customer service and are
willing to set up trials so you can test out the software and all the features.
They have recently added in some features that are useful to phone/tablet
users as well as connecting in with Skype.

http://www.altarama.com/

Gimlet doesn't allow for multiple back and forth interactions and attachments
although it looks great for quick one-off reference question/answers and for
keeping reference stats.

Do you have a sense of how well it actually works? Is Open Library implementing

The record matching algorithm used by the Open Library is available here:
https://github.com/openlibrary/openlibrary/tree/master/openlibrary/catalog/merge

The original spec, which may have changed in the implementation, is here:

Very easy to implement, even for non-coders. and also highly flexible.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Desk Statistics Software Question

2013-08-22 Thread Ahniwa Ferrari
I was looking at this May of last year. I played with some options,
including cloud-based using Google Form into a Google doc, and Gimlet, and
other commercial options. We ended up going with LibAnalytics (
http://www.springshare.com/libanalytics/) which was dirt-cheap and easy for
everyone to use (bonus if you're using LibGuides because the back-end is
very familiar). If you're curious, this is the process I went through
looking at the cloud-based Google solution:

First there's this:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHFFdUZHRjRsejVuNnd6ZGJ4dHc4N3c6MQ

That dumps data into this:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aj2cdNzRD0UkdHFFdUZHRjRsejVuNnd6ZGJ4dHc4N3c

And then I throw it onto a webpage and get this:
http://devweb.stmartin.edu/library/desktracker-gform-test.html

FYI we had some proponents of Gimlet but it wasn't customizable enough for
my tastes.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Desk Statistics Software Question

2013-08-22 Thread Beata Frelas
Hesburgh Libraries uses:

Main Library Reference Department:
Desktracker

Mahaffey Business Library:
FootPrints (BMC Software)

In the past we instituted Pendragon Software (input via Palm OS form into
Access Database). Since Business Library didn't have means to accommodate
staffing accordingly, I did a bit of pattern recognition on what types of
questions were asked at different time intervals during the day. Interestingly
enough, through the granular enough data model, we found out that:

- most printer, fax and copier questions were coming early in the morning and
during lunch time (evidence that students are mainly printing their work,
getting materials ready and will need light technical support and less
library/research assistance)

- majority of research questions were coming in in the afternoon and early
evening hours (evidence of the students' behavior patterns related to their
work days on campus)

This data allowed us to ensure to have adequate staffing for the morning and
afternoon/evening hours to accommodate the types of inquiries received.

If you are interested in more details and/or would like to see the pictorial
data representation of this study, please email me directly:

Best of luck.

We use LibStats (GPL) at York U:

https://code.google.com/p/libstats/

It appears to be moribund, but it works. It's pretty bare bones but it's easy
to enter in what you want. It generates some reports but not many, so I wrote
an R script to make a lot of prettier charts.

Springshare's RefStats is similar but looks more up to date and has better
reports, but it's proprietary and commercial.

It probably doesn't matter too much what program you use so much as how you
analyze the data and make that part of your thinking about how to make the ref
desk better (whatever better means for you). We all enter our ref desk work
into our system, but it's pretty much a one-way system and nothing much happens
with the data except for some numbers in annual reports.

We use Zoho Creator. I don't know that it's perfect, but it took about 10

Re: [CODE4LIB] Desk Statistics Software Question

2013-08-22 Thread Andreas Orphanides
We use Suma. This may or may not have something to do with the fact that
Jason Casden works upstairs from our reference desk. Setting that aside,
we've found it to fit well with our needs, especially since the locational
component allows us to track roving reference by location. If you keep very
detailed stats (e.g., many categories, recording exact timelengths for
interactions, etc) it might not be as ideal. We record 3 dimensions other
than location: question type (4 kinds), medium (phone or in person), and
duration (very short, short, medium, long).

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I am working with 2 (or more in

were available to me. I have a feeling they are a bit varied. I'm also
messing around with marcXimiL a little but I'm having trouble getting
it to output any records at all. I also was looking at the XC
aggregation module but I was having trouble getting that to work
properly as well and the listserv was unresponsive. It seemed like
good software but it required me to set up an OAI harvest source to
allow it to ingest the records and that...well...enough is enough... I
think I will probably need to write something, and at least that way I
know what it will be doing rather than plowing through software that
has little to no support. Please feel free to let me know of a particular
strategy you think might work best in this regard...

If you couldn't get adequate deduping from the control fields available in
MarcEdit deduping, what control fields do you think you need to dedup on? You
can actually specify any arbitrary field and subfield for deduping in MarcEdit.
