[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-2842?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=17447088#comment-17447088 ] Michael Bien commented on NETBEANS-2842: as far as i can tell, this the current situation: * pack200 is available in JDK 11, NB is currently also supporting JDK 8 - and both can be used to install old plugins * the problem is only a problem for old, unmaintained plugins, since maintained plugins can be rebuild without pack200 * there might be also the option to repack plugins (without rebuild) outside of NB using JDK11 and unpack200 via shell script or tool/service since pack200 is a bytecode aware compression algorithm, and it doesn't seem to be maintained beyond 14, i don't think its realistic to actually keep supporting it long term. The main motivation for it was webstart, which is gone too for quite a while, so there shouldn't be many users interested in keeping it alive left. So i would recommend doing the following: * check if old (popular) plugins could be rebuild without pack200, get in touch with the maintainers * try to make a convenient tool which can repack a plugin without pack200 (e.g jlink + JDK11) * disable all pack200 in NB if it isn't disabled yet, warn in UI if its used for plugin distribution * don't allow new pack200 plugins on the plugin portal I just rebuild as an exercise a NB platform project I haven't touched since 2009 and could not find any issues while running on NB 12.5+JDK17 in UX without pack200 enabled. I pulled the 1.0.0 nbm and attempted to manually install the plugin using Netbans...Tools...Plugins...Download (pointing to the specific nbm) which resulted in the following when attempting to install !unpack200 failure.png! What test class in Netbeans codebase would this be normally tested in? I pulled a few versions from https://github.com/junichi11/netbeans-rainbow-braces/releases, pulled the latest apache common compress down, created a unit test in the ArchiveTest with the nbm as input and it seemed to run and pass without issue on the versions I pulled (1.0.0, 1.0.2, 1.1.3). You'll need to set the JT_HOME environment variable. Best run in a Unix shell environment. however the Apache Harmony code is easier to modify, so will be easier
to update to support later bytecode.

It's a bit more ambitious, the project attempts to preserve both the C and Java versions of Pack200, it's forked off JDK14. I'm sure Emmanual would be happy to receive some assistance if anyone would like to. I only looked at maintaining a Java implementation. From my observations, Apache Harmony's pack200 had the most maintainable code, but doesn't yet support the latest features. Last I checked Emmanual's version didn't yet build, however that may have changed. I created three repositories, 1. Apache Harmony based Pack 200. 2. OpenJDK Pack 200. 3. Apache Harmony, including the tests from OpenJDK. The OpenJDK pack200 implementation uses the jtreg test suite, I have left the tests unmodified, the OpenJDk Pack 200 code builds and passes all tests. The Apache Harmony version doesn't yet pass all OpenJDK pack 200 tests, however the Apache Harmony code is easier to modify, so will be easier to update to support later bytecode. Pack200 from OpenJDK Pack200 from Harmony with update ASM libs, testing with OpenJDK Pack200 tests. I haven't had time to work on this lately, however the pack200.net domain exists for this purpose. Pack200 was intended to work with later bytecodes by not compressing later bytecode. In netbeans\platform\autoupdate.services\libsrc\org\netbeans\updater\ModuleUpdater.java I find a findUnpack200Executable method which seems to basically look for the java bin folder where this would be and execute it. As I have multiple versions of the JDK installed, I just created a symbolic
link in the jdk-14/bin directory to 'pack200' from jdk-13/bin.
In linux:
{code:java}
$ cwd
/home/bwillcott/apps/jdk-14/bin
$ ln -s ../../jdk-13/bin/pack200
{code}
Alternatively, just copy it across.

NetBeans tries to call the pack200 binary to unpack the external dependency from my plugin, and it fails. Workaround for this: Install the plugin with a JDK < 14 and it works.
