Re: What's a "Webshop re-open gifts?"

2008-07-03 Thread ian douglas
Steve has mentioned several times that "while supplies last", they would
be sending laser stylii, 512MB microSD cards and a headset with the
10-pack orders. Once they run out, they run out, and they'll send a
plastic stylus with each phone.

Openmoko doesn't want to be in the business of selling stylus pointers,
microSD cards, screen protectors, headsets, carrying pouches, etc.
They'd rather leave that to after-market entrepreneurs.

Well according to a message earlier here, the nice stylus is being used up
before they move to a plastic one so I would think the re-open gift is
stuff that isn't part of the actual $399 price and is a gift until they are
gone. I would assume they'd be included in the 10 packs as well.

Los Angeles Group Purchase is Complete!

2008-07-03 Thread ian douglas
I'm writing up a notice to 5 of the 10 people from the wiki who were
good enough to contact me to discuss payment options and a
meet-and-greet. Through some basic collaboration, I went ahead and made
the purchase.

The other 5 people have a ticking clock before I sell their Freerunners
to other interested parties! 7 days to contact me once they arrive (if
they ship on Saturday, they should arrive on Tuesday).

For those curious, a 10-pack of phones plus one debug board comes out as:

1x DBoard for $99.00 each
1x Neo FreeRunner - GSM 850-10 Pack for $3,690.00 each

Subtotal : $3,789.00 USD
Tax : $274.70 USD
Shipping : $32.58 USD
Total : $4,096.28 USD

Looks like the tax rate is 7.25%, and the $32.58 is for 2nd day air via
UPS. The slowest shipping option was $9.80.

ppp tries to compress it already, yes.

some carriers stuck with gprs rates used to try payload manipulation.
one way is with an http proxy that removes fidelity from images before
sending them across the slow link. t-mobile in the US did this. maybe
they still have it as an option.

That's the same I'd like to post (also months ago :P)!

A way to workaround this problem would be using a wrapper (based on
Skype API) that runs on a (linux) PC that runs Skype and acts as a
server to which our phone will connect.

As Shawn has posted there are some of these wrappers using the skype API
to use skype with standard SIP clients.
Myself I've tried SippySkype in my PC and I was able to make my phone
attached to a SIP VoIP adapter (PAP2) ring when I was called in skype
(both calling it using its LAN IP and calling its telephone number using
another VoIP call performed by SippySkype itself).
Or, at the contrary, I was able to call my contacts by calling them
using my phone attached to the voip-adapter.

So basically my idea to get my incoming skype calls on Freerunner:
  - Run Skype and SippySkype on my PC / Server
  - Activating two free accounts of the same VoIP provider (registering
at one of these that allows you to call freely the numbers of the
same provider itself [skypho.net does it])
  - Setting Sippyskype to redirect my skype incoming calls as SIP calls
done using the first VoIP number I've got to the second VoIP number
(that is the mobile itself).

Skype-call -> Skype2SIP -> SIP-call-account1 -> account2 ->
SIP-openmoko-client -> phone

And reverse. This is not hard, just a little tricky; and with no
openmoko SIP client, it's, well, harder :P BTW, maybe, the ASU image has
a working one?!

All This could be a way to talk with skype client, but to get a real
skype-wrapper we're missing the contacts chat support. Sippyskype (as
the others Skype2SIP wrappers) doesn't support it. I figure it won't be
so hard doing it. There's a skype2irc implementation, so it could be
used to create a fake irc server on local PC to connect to with the phone.

Just some cents...

Maximizing the GPRS through compression and caching

2008-07-03 Thread Mikko Rauhala

Yeah I have often done something to this effect when surfing over GPRS;
do an ssh -C -L tunnel to a web proxy (or even nowadays use the generic
socks tunneling of ssh -C -D). That's an easy if not quite as generic
solution as full-blown compressed VPN. (I'm not sure if the dropbear
client supports -D, I don't think so; but anyway.)

For web browsing, there's more to be done by using a smart proxy on both
the client and the intermediary computer; see the ideas at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Server:WebProxy

I have some ugly and partially buggy (the Twisted integration part
spesifically) python code that does the HTML diffing (well, it splits on
> and identifies and transmits line ranges; uses ssh -C to provide usual
compression and encryption). I will probably debug it a bit at some
point here since hey, my Freerunner is shipping to me tomorrow. Perhaps
hopefully also add rdiff support for non-ML/text data (yes, I did check
the special algo was markedly more efficient for ML/text in several
interesting test cases at least). However, I'm not convinced I'll have
the motivation to polish it up as suitable for general consumption, and
would appreciate if an interested party stepped up (hell, even if they
didn't use my hacked-up code at all but rather just ran with the general
idea).

Oh yeah, the code? It's not up anywhere at this point, since it's not
useful as is. I can send to interested parties on request, and if I get
it functional, I'll certainly post it up.

I wonder how feasible/effective it would be to do some extra realtime
compression on the GPRS data link?
Make a connection to your home Linux box to terminate the compression
and connect you out to the internet from there.

I'm not sure how GPRS works exactly, it may already use compression that
can't really be improved upon etc.. but it might be something to think
about.
Even and improvement from 5KB/s to 8KB/s would be nice.

Re: My word on GPRS (was: How Slow Is Fast?)

2008-07-03 Thread Steven **
Really, the chances of your connection being *constantly* in use is
pretty small. You'd have to be downloading a relatively large file or
something that has 0 ms of idle time. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't
happen during normal use.

For example, you're browsing the web. You'd pull up a webpage. Maybe
during the few seconds this takes to load, your phone won't ring.
But, as soon as that page is loaded, you'd get the call. And that's
worst case. Chances are, the loading of the webpage acts as loading
several smaller files where it would get interrupted halfway through
by a phone call.

Look in mail archives (i.e. with gmane), some weeks ago has been posted
an how-to for importing contacts in ASU (qtopia, then...).

I figure that is not so hard building a contact file for the gtk

You can add extra applications to the homescreen by dropping standard
Linux application launchers (.desktop file) into
/usr/share/applications. Most applications should do this anyway.

Uh oh, I read a bit up on that and apparantly a lot of people (even with new
handsets) can confirm that incoming calls very rarely come through an active
gprs connection.

The net is full of discussions about that, see e.g.

It's unfortunate, but I'd rather waste some cycles on a server to get
a clean, open interface on the phone. The problem is so many people
think of Skype first when they think of VoIP. Why? Probably because
it "just works" - does a lot of sneaky stuff to get through various
kinds of firewalls, etc.

Anyway there is native Skype for Linux now, so maybe some of these are
using the published APIs, if that's possible... not sure.

http://zhink.com/site/main/?p=5 (claims to be all-software, running
on Linux, but is not free)

Some of them just have to be run on Windows though. (and use the
published APIs)

A tougher alternative is to reverse-engineer it.

There is still an unclaimed bounty being offered for a proper free
Asterisk-Skype gateway that runs on Linux.

What I have done in the past is use 'ssh -D' to create a local SOCKS
proxy to tunnel to another machine running SSHD on port 993.

There are weird latency effects involved in laying all your connections
over a single TCP connection; better would be see if one can abuse TCP
packets to a remote port 993 and treat it as UDP, and then do OpenVPN.
(Or just see if you can do UDP on that network.)

milestone1 did not contain any gprs features. milestone2 was not supposed to
have, but since people have approached me a lot about that, I promised to
take a look -- and it was quite simple ;) GPRS is now working fine in
framework git, just not deployed into an image yet.

Try building an image and see for yourself. (Note that I don't guarantee

2008-07-03 Thread Shawn Rutledge
It's often been wished for an Asterisk-to-Skype gateway. It would be
an elegant solution: run the gateway at home or on a hosted server,
and use any ordinary SIP or IAX client on the Neo.

Well last time I checked into that was a couple years ago, but now it
appears such a thing exists:

http://www.mhspot.com/mhspot/sippyskype.htm

https://extras.skype.com/categories/all/good/asterisk

http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/skype/sip-to-skype-gateway-breaks-skypes-great-wall-of-voip.asp
http://www.asteriskvoipnews.com/asterisk_development/skypetoasterisksip_progress_part_1.html

And asterisk of course can make good use of third-party PSTN (real
telephone line) termination services, or you can use a Winmodem to
connect Asterisk to your own home phone line. Then use the Neo as a
client.

I know that, but that the signaling of an incoming voice call won't

I have just did some measurements and I have achieved a sustained throughput
of about 5K/sec. It's not stellar, but you can actually do a lot with that,
if you're a bit clever. People have lived for decades with slower landline
modems.

I just did some tests with our framework and here's my first (not final) word
on it:

You can activate a GPRS context, have the ppp0 interface automatically setup
and transmit data.

Two cases now:

a) If you want to dial out, just dial out. The ppp0 interface will keep being
up, but will not be able to transmit any data while you're calling, e.g. a
wget will be stalling, pings will hang. Once you hangup, the context will
automatically be resumed, wget will continue, pings will return.

b) If you want to receive calls, the connection needs to be idle. You can
safely have an activated context (i.e. i was able to log in via SSH) being
idle and then you will get your incoming call notifications.

Note though, once someone wants to call you while you are not idling, i.e.
during a long wget, you will not get any call notifications. Instead, the
network will think you are not reachable and -- if configured -- send you to
the voice mailbox.

All in all, considering the age of the TI Calypso, I'm quite satisfied with
the possibilites this gives us.

Yes, it's not perfect. Yes, I'd love to have more. But I can already do a lot.

Hope that helps,

Hey, thanks for everyones responses, that cleared up things immensely.
And, after I posted (and thought that I researched it thoroughly), I saw
on openmoko.com, it specifically says no EDGE support. Silly me.

I am curious, would EDGE support be a potential software upgrade? Or
does it require new hardware?

I'm torn between buying one now and waiting and see what comes out in

I don't have any first hand experience with T-Mobile data plans, but
this site might help you:

http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/T-Mobile_Data

It looks like the $5.99/month plan really is unlimited, but there are
port restrictions. The $19.99/month plan has no restrictions. These
are both add-ons for people with a voice plan. The more expensive plan
is a stand alone data plan.

Hi,

Edge is often referred to "2,75G".

To sum it up :

2G is plain old GSM (9.6kbits/sec)
2,5G is GPRS (about 50 kbits/sec)
2,75G is EDGE (about 200 kbits/sec)
3G is HSDPA (up to a few Mbits/sec)

Neo Freerunner is GPRS-capable. Not awesome, but enough to check mails
or things like that.

So's Wikipedia. And everyone else as well since 3G is just a blanket
marketing term for a bundle of technologies.

EDGE does, at its fastest, reach speeds sometimes coined as 3G, but is
mostly considered 2G anyway. Does any of it matter? No.

EDGE is a beefed-up GPRS. You _should_ be fine, only at lower speeds.

FreeRunner and Rogers/Fido question

2008-07-03 Thread Todd Courtnage
Hey all.

I live in Canada (Calgary) and am looking at buying the FreeRunner.
I've also noticed that there is no 3G support. I presently have a
BlackBerry 8700 on Rogers EDGE network, with a data plan. I'm confused
in whether EDGE is 3G or 2G. On the Wikipedia page:
"While EDGE is part of the 3G standard, some phones report EDGE and 3G
network availability as separate things, notably the iPhone."

However, on the same Wikipedia page, under the Mobile Communication
standard chart, they list EDGE under the GSM (2G) section.

Paint me confused. :-) Can I (in theory, at least) access Rogers' EDGE
network, and hence get data/internet access on the FreeRunner? Or get a
data plan on Fido and use it with the FreeRunner (as my Rogers contract
is coming due in a month or two).

GSM Carrier

2008-07-03 Thread Geoff Ruscoe
Okay so I started looking into the GSM carriers around here [U.S. /
Spefically midwest] and basically it seems to me that our only _real_
options are T-Mobile and AT&T.

So I looked into them and was wondering if anybody had any feedback on
this. I've seen some other threads, but they didn't cover this exactly.

So with T-Mobile they have a web and email option for like $5 / month (which
says unlimited), but then they also have an internet plan which is like $40
/ month. Does anybody have these plans and will I be able to use the
FreeRunner as a web device with the $5 plan?

Also do we have the ability to do SMS messages with the FreeRunner as
shipped?

A service is not "open source" per se, though there are certainly many
VOIP to POTS bridging providers who use standard protocols. I use
diamondcard (for the very little I have need for such a thing), mostly
because Ekiga offered it by default (though I've since changed to
Twinklephone - the wonders of standard protocols!)

You can presumably use Asterisk to set up such a service, if that's what
you're asking - it's rather unclear.

Umm, the users?

You seem to be rather confused about open source, open protocols and
services that can be accessed using the above, to be frank. These are
three different things, though go well together.

I really want to get one so badly but I'm afraid of getting the wrong
GSM frequency. I live in Oregon, USA and use T-Mobile. Can anyone
advise? I looked at the website suggested in the store and it says
T-Mobile uses GSM 1900. Does that mean I can't use any FreeRunner?
Thanks,
Brad

Brad,

The FR is a tri-band GSM phone which means it works on all 850/1800/1900
frequency networks. To my knowledge US carriers don't use the 900 mhz
band, so the 850mhz model FR (which also includes 1800 and 1900 mhz)
will work with any US carrier.

diamondcard.us works with ekiga on my desktop, and on my n800 it's basic
sip with call out functionality. I haven't shopped around though and have
only used it once via ekiga on my desktop but it worked perfectly.

The gateway error basically means your card was denied and your bank may have
red flagged the transaction. Just a call to your bank to authorize the
transaction and you'll be one step closer to your freerunner. :)

Let's create a high-functionality, high-stability FSO/ASU based release

2008-07-03 Thread Bobby Martin
See http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Stable_Hybrid_Release to sign up to
help out, or to get the images once we have something.

**Overview**

The Stable Hybrid Release (SHR) is intended to be a combination of the
FSO, some of the 2007.2 GTK software, and the ASU that provides all of
the functionality of the 2007.2 software, but with the stability of
the FSO and the new GUI toolkits provided by the ASU. It will probably
be based on an ASU build, with the FSO software and GTK end-user apps
added.

(We're not married to the idea of using the GTK apps, but they already
exist and are more-or-less debugged at least on the UI side. If
someone knows of a more stable and/or usable app that's appropriate
for the OM, let us know by dropping a comment on the Talk tab of this
page.)

**First steps**

The first pass at making the GTK software use the FSO will involve
just creating a gsmd workalike that sends commands to the ophoned dbus
api from FSO. mickeyterm is an example of another program that lets
you send GSM commands through ophoned.

We want to have a build that is stable, so we'll need some standard
way of identifying the latest stable pieces of all the different
software in the SHR, as well as a way to identify previous released
versions of the SHR.

(See http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Stable_Hybrid_Release to read more.)

Thanks,
Bobby

Re: Openmoko Webshop Reopen NOW!!!

2008-07-03 Thread Jeffrey Malone
The phone is a tri-band phone using the 1900 and 1800 bands. The third band
is either 900 or 850. T-Mobile doesn't use either 900 or 850 in the US --
however, other US GSM providers do use 850.
In certain locations, T-Mobile allows roaming onto these 850 networks, so it
can increase your coverage. Refer to T-Mobile's signal checker on their
website, which will identify 850 roaming zones with a different colour.
850 is also advantageous in so much that even if you cannot roam onto it,
you can still use it to make 911 calls during an emergency.

The 850 band will however reduce your international roaming capabilities,
but 1800 is still generally available in most western countries.

So yes, either the 900 or 850 will work fine on T-Mobile US, but the 850 is
preferred for those in the US.

I think 500 is probably a generic HTTP 500 (Internal Server Error), as
I'm getting a "Gateway Error 500" ("Error from the Hi Trust gateway:
TrustLink Server is closed. Or Merchant Server IP is not consistent with
TrustLink Server setting.") before I even get a chance to enter my
credit card info--i.e. when it says, "Forwarding you to Hi_Trust..."

Though--assuming I can get to the Hi Trust server eventually--I'll keep
an eye out for a 500 indicated the credit card was rejected, too. :)

My bank just called to see if the charge was valid. I asked why it was

Perhaps OM should make it look like the money is going to California, or
tell Visa that they have a physical presence in the US or something...

Get a USB midisport or similar device and hook it up the freerunner's
usb host port. Add Jack and some synths and you're good to go :-).

The question now is how many synths use fixed point math and what
their load is like. I recall many years ago doing some stuff on my
166Mhz pentium so it might work. Now if only Jack used fixed point
math instead of representing samples as 32-bit floats (granted there
are quality issues with switching to a fixed point representation when
mixing a lot of audio sources, but a slight degradation would be
acceptable and probably not noticable for performance work).

The answer probably depends on what you mean by 'integrated' ;-)

There is a player in the GTK image that uses gstreamer and has a huge list of
gstreamer plugins. The UI is somewhat limited at the moment, and last time I
tried to play an MP3 it failed with a gstreamer error. That may be a result
of using a daily snapshot rather than a release version though.

mplayer is also known to run, and there is a patched version to support
hardware accelerated h264 playback.

Both of these _should_ support playback of more or less any format with an
open codec implementation, but I'm not aware of any testing to show whether
they all work. Due to the limited CPU power video files will have to be
fairly low resolution to get a decent frame rate. QVGA should do the trick,
but search the archive for rasterman's comments on the glamo limitations.

Dallas/Austin Group Purchase

2008-07-03 Thread Josh Valdez
Just wondering if there is any more interest in the Dallas area for a group
purchase. So far there are only three people. Also, we might be able to work
something out with the Austin purchase as they almost have 20. To anyone in
Austin, have you ordered yet?

Ok, I'm not using Evolution on my desktop, but I'll see what I can find out.
