[MBF]Re: Working on using NOD32 as a scanner for Declude

2013-11-14 Thread David Barker
Hi Friends :)

The End User License Agreement for ESET states:

b) Stipulation of the number of licenses. The right to use the Software shall
be bound by the number of End Users. One End User shall be taken to refer to
the following: (i) installation of the Software on one computer system; or (ii)
if the extent of a license is bound to the number of mail boxes, then one End
User shall be taken to refer to a computer user who accepts electronic mail via
a Mail User Agent (hereinafter referred to as “an MUA”). If an MUA accepts
electronic mail and subsequently distributes it automatically to several users,
then the number of End Users shall be determined according to the actual number
of users for whom the electronic mail is distributed. If a mail server performs
the function of a mail gate, the number of End Users shall equal the number of
mail server users for which the said gate provides services. If an unspecified
number of electronic mail addresses are directed to and accepted by one user
(e.g., through aliases) and messages are not automatically distributed by the
client to a larger number of users, a License for one computer shall be
required. You must not use the same License at the same time on more than one
computer.

MBF would not want any one getting into trouble regarding the use of a
license. MBF strongly suggest that as Mail Admins we stay within the
parameters of our software agreements.

As Martin Schaible responded, if the server already has a license this is an
acceptable use since all it is doing is scanning a file.

This is the Business version of NOD32.

2013-11-14 Thread johnlist
David I agree. Just so that everyone knows, ESET NOD32 Business Edition is
installed on a every server and workstaion within our company, therefore we are
clearly operating within the terms of the licensing agreement.

If some one is looking to purchase a minimum number of ESET NOD32 licenses for
the SOLE purpose of using it as a command line scanner within Declude, you are
probably violating the end user license agreement.

Instead, you should be (if you are in corporate inviroment) looking at
utilizing the virus scanner you already have licensed for your entire corporate
network. In my case, this is ESET NOD32.

2013-11-13 Thread johnlist
OK, this actually looks like a bug in Windows Server 2008 R2.

I have just done some additional tests and you can check for yourself.

Any one on a Windows Server 2008 R2 go to C:\Program Files (x86)\ directory
and do a dir /x and see what you get for the directory C:\Program Files
(x86)\MSXML 4.0\

You do not get the short name do you. The space is at character 6.

Now go to C:\Program Files\VMware\ and do a dir /x and see what you get for
the directory C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware tools\

You do get a short name this time. The space is character 7 which is replaced
anyways.

Now try creating a directory called TEST TEST TEST at the root of C, then do
a dir /x at the root of C and what do you get? Again, you do not get the
short name.

This seems like a bug in Windows Server 2008 R2. On a Windows 7 Professional it
works just fine.

That will not work as one of the parameters is you have to define the path to
the base directory where the modules of the program are IF they are not in
sub-directories where the executable is being called, which would still have
the space in it.

I am sure that will work, and ultimatly what I have a feeling I will have to
do, but trying to avoid that as it will require a reboot of the VM.

Try uninstalling NOD and reinstalling it in a directory with no spaces. Such as
C:\NOD and see if that helps. A little unconventional, I know, but it would be
a good test.

John,

Rather than guessing, just use the command link DIR command with the /X
option.
Start at the C: drive and then work your way through the two subfolders.

The /X option will tell you the 8.3 MSDOS style name for each folder/file.

Best Regards,
Andy

That will not work as one of the parameters is you have to define the path to
the base directory where the modules of the program are IF they are not in
sub-directories where the executable is being called, which would still have
the space in it.

I know you tried the Dir /X and you saw spaces where the 8.3 should appear.

Can you please elaborate? I just want to make sure you didn't accidentally try:

Naturally THAT would result in a blank field for ecls.exe, because THAT
file name is LESS than 8 characters...

Did you actually try ONLY:

If you still have problems passing Parameters, You might be able to create a
batch file to take care of the difficult things.

c:\nod32.bat %1 %2 %3...

Where %1 is parameter that may change from scan to scan. (Don't remember if
you have to call the file name from command line scanner)

Batch file could be
C:\Program Files\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe %1 /no-boots /sfx /rtp
/adware /unsafe /unwanted /pattern /heur /clean-mode=NONE /no-log-console

It has been a while since I worked with batch files, but I believe you can
pass the results from the exe back to the batch file as well. Not elegant,
but it may work if the other does not.

Hi John,

But that's to be expected!?
If you ran DIR /X from within the ESET NOD32 Antivirus directory then it will
indeed display a blank short name for ecls.exe because THAT name truly is
LESS than 8+3 characters.

If you are trying to find the short name for \ESET NOD32 Antivirus\, you have
to run the DIR /X in the PARENT directory of THAT subdirectory.

So,

DIR /X C:\Program Files

will tell you the short name for the ESET NOD32 Antivirus subfolder
(something like 'ESETNO~1').

Then,

DIR /C C:\

will tell you the short name for the Program Files subfolder (something like
'Progra~1' or 'Progra~2').

THEN you string those short names together and get something like:

C:\Progra~1\ESETNO~1\ecls.exe

(that's just a for instance, NOT your actual path).

You CANNOT get the full path by looking at a single DIR output of the final
subdirectory itself.

OK, here is the configuration I have that is working if anyone else wants to
use it. This is for Business verion 4, but looking at the instructions for
version 5 they are the same.

SCANFILE2 C:\Progra~1\ESET\ecls.exe /base-dir=C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32
AntiVirus /no-boots /sfx /rtp /adware /unsafe /unwanted /pattern /heur
/clean-mode=NONE /no-log-console

VIRUSCODE2 50
VIRUSCODE2 10

Exit code 50 is a threat was found, exit code 10 is some files could not be
scanned and treat as suspicious.

Again, this is working with COPYING the ecls.exe FROM C:\Program
Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 AntiVirus\ TO C:\Program Files\ESET\

This is on Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit and the installed version of NOD32 is
4.2.71.2 64 bit Business edition.

I am using ClamWin for for the first scanner.

Hi John,

I may be asking the obvious:
But given that this is a new 64 bit system, any chance that you or some other
admin had disabled 8.3 file name creation for that NTFS volume for performance
reasons? THAT would explain how you could possibly have a LONG directory name
but NO 8.3 equivalent.

Other than that, I suppose one of your earlier messages left out the ESET
subdirectory bit.

Here's what you had written:

I am working on using NOD32 as an additional scanner for Declude Virus but
am running into a problem with spaces in the path.
Setting Scan File 2 to C:\Program Files\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe ...

Obviously, the above path would INCORRECT, if the REAL path was NOT:

C:\Program Files\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe

but instead is:

C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe

Best Regards,
Andy

Subject: [MBF]Working on using NOD32 as a scanner for Declude

I am working on using NOD32 as an additional scanner for Declude Virus but am
running into a problem with spaces in the path.

Setting Scan File 2 to C:\Program Files\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ecls.exe
/no-boots /sfx /rtp /adware /unsafe /unwanted /pattern /heur /clean-mode=NONE
/no-log-console

ERROR: SCANFILE option must not have any spaces in the pathname

The problem is \ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ as if I try to use \ESET~1\ it can not
find it.

Your virus scanner DOES NOT EXIST (at C:\Progra~1\ESET~1\ecls.exe

Its not that part, it is the third level, in that there is a space after 4
charachters.

If you have a 64-bit system, try Progra~2 instead of ~1

2013-11-11 Thread Andy Schmidt
John,

Rather than guessing, just use the command link DIR command with the /X
option.
Start at the C: drive and then work your way through the two subfolders.

The /X option will tell you the 8.3 MSDOS style name for each folder/file.

Best Regards,
Andy

2013-11-11 Thread Linda Pagillo
Try uninstalling NOD and reinstalling it in a directory with no spaces. Such as
C:\NOD and see if that helps. A little unconventional, I know, but it would be
a good test.
