Re: [CGUYS] Memory question

2007-08-02 Thread Paula Minor

Is there any info in panic.log?

Ummm, I don't know. Not sure I'd understand it even if I saw it.

Did you update to X.4.10? If yes you'll have to hope that X.4.11 fixes
it. What I read about X.4.11 suggests that it is largely intended
to fix

the bugs in X.4.10. Not Apple's proudest hour.
I'm still on 10.4.9. Was afraid to update any more since I was
already having problems with it.

I have 2.5 gigs RAM processor is 2.1 GHz.

A near full drive could definitely cause all the problems you
describe.

What process(s) are using all this CPU time? Check with Activity
Monitor.
It's almost always Camino with the the most CPU usage and that's
generally after it's been running for a few days. I've been up and
going all day and so far I'm just hitting around 61% with Mail and
Camino the only major programs running. If I open iTunes it will
difinately slow down but Activity Monitor doesn't indicate that
iTunes is using that much of it. Right now Camino is 39% CPU time
and Activity Monitor is next at 5...2...well, it changes.
I just started iTunes and the cPU is showing 100% now and Activity
MOnitor shows iTunes varying between 30 and 45% while it updates
podcasts. ANd typing on here is slowing down with letters not not
showing up when I type them. If I close iTunes and open, say,
Lightroom, it will slow down even more. And my Photoshop CS2
wouldn't runbut it used to.

You want minimum 1-2 GB of free disk space.

Even before I removed my iTunes library and all my photos I had
around 20gb free. I now have 95 gb free.

I'll look for AppleJack and see if it's my memory that is not working
correctly.

Thank you!

Well, you know what I mean. Trojans, etc.

Great! Then I can have Windows on one drive, OSX on another and get

[CGUYS] Google Video/ADFP 9,0,47,0

2007-08-02 Thread Christopher Range
This is sort of a followup to my original question the other week when I
couldn't seem to get Adob Flash Player to work. As I had said after
that original question, I got it to work again but, that stopped. I
noticed several things since then. As you can see from the #'s above,
the version is current.

1. If I try to play video directly from Google Video, a little red n'
white box saying 'YouTube' appears in the upper-left hand corner of the
picture to be clicked on to watch the video
   a. After clicking on the image to watch the video, it says 'loading'
till it eventually fails to load it.
2. If I stay on the Google main page and, type the name of the band or,
the name of the track, it will bring up a bunch like the other sequence
BUT, it will go to YouTube AND allow the video to be played without
trouble loading.

If this doesn't make sense, ask me to clarify, if you happen to be confused.

Re: [CGUYS] Mac intel chip

2007-08-02 Thread b_s-wilk

Chad

One of the reasons I stayed with the G4 tower for so long is that the
model that I have is one of the most upgradable "newer' Macs--lots of
room, lots of slots, but slow bus. It's now as old as my PowerMac 7600
was when I got a new one. It's time.

Download sizes: The software for the G4/G5 chip is smaller because the
newer software may be universal binaries containing both PPC and Intel
versions. You can slim it down by removing the excess code with one of
several utilities [search terms: remove excess code from universal
binary--found XSlimmer].

Image quality: Analog photos have near infinite data depending on film
speed, digital ones do not. Some people can see the difference--most
can't, and don't care. There are "miracles" that can be done in the
darkroom that are still difficult to reproduce digitally. National
Geographic, Life Magazine, news photographers used quality cameras and
lenses, and knew how to print their own photos. Did you know that some
photos for NG and Life took hours to print just one, while news shots
were done quickly, but handled/printed by 'experts' [through experience,
trial and error]?

Camera/phones: I went to the Apple store last week to play with an
iPhone. I like it. It's awesome, but too big, too heavy. I like the
Nokia Nseries [Zeiss lenses] better, although they don't talk well with
Macs. Some have WiFi, relatively high res cameras and card slots. The
only downside is that they're hard to unlock. This one is free with a
contract in the UK,
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n73-cam-en.shtml [will have
wifi soon]. This one is better as a camera,
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n93-cam-en.shtml. The Nokia
site is awful, hard to navigate; can't right-click; no specs; no
HTML--Flash is not appropriate for this kind of info, only for
teasers--but their phones are wonderful. Camera phone reviews on
mobile-review.com give better pix examples than Nokia site.

Thanks for reply, both from Betty and Tom. Clearly,
my experience with CS3beta at the Apple Store is what
one can expect for the MacPro desktop. Won’t work
for me. Not lost on me is the relative sizes of
downloads for the g4 and the new intel-chip Macs,
often four times the size for the latter. For now it
might be a G5 big berta I should be seeking to bump my
speed in CS2. More research….

I never cease to be astonished at the image quality
mere street reporters were able to achieve with their
SpeedGraphics in the 40’s and 50’s. A quality
which today in digital orient would require $25k to
emulate. A close photographer friend in NB remarked
to me recently how a practised rotate of the wrist in
chemical photography represents hours of digital
screen. Orthodoxies are impossible to counter, my
clients demand the image now, and I provide this.

Here is what my tech-hip Central European friends are
using now, and to a person they are not at all
intrigued by the iPhone. As Apple customer,
end-to-end, it’s hard to accept, but they are truly
conversant with tomorrow, we here remain Model T…

There is a magnetic switch in the lid that detects when the lid is
closed. Sometimes it goes bad. The easy solution is to snip the wire that
goes to the switch and give up on this feature.

On an iBook it is easy to get to the wire. I have done this and can vouch
for it being easy and effective.

On a Dell? I don't know. Try Googling for an answer. For the iBook I
easily found a good step by step with clear pictures.

[CGUYS] CIO: Eight Financial Reasons Why You Should Use Mac OS

2007-08-02 Thread David K. Watson

I came across this article today on the CIO website:

"Eight Financial Reasons Why You Should Use Mac OS"

It made the case that Macs often offer both lower TCO and higher ROI
than

windows.

For you Mac scoffers, there is a countervailing argument:

"Seven Reasons to Think Twice About Macs in the Enterprise"

I don't think that this is nearly as well written. For example,
Reason #1: "Macs are
Proprietary" ignores the issue that many common hardware vendors are
also
proprietary, but this does not seem to stop many businesses. You
cannot, for
example, get cartridges, drivers or support for a Dell printer from
anywhere but Dell.

To try to forestall a certain kind of comment, let me say that it is
FINE WITH ME
if you like Windows and don't think that Macs are right for you.
However,
I think that there are many cases where Macs could be used to better
advantage,

and I also think that more people should be open to this possibility.

[CGUYS] Windows Server 2003 Adprep Woes

2007-08-02 Thread Adil Godrej

A question for those who deal with Windows servers.

We're trying to move our Active Directory from Windows 2000 Server to
a new machine running Windows 2003 x64 Server R2. One step involves
running the adprep program that comes on the Win2003 install disks on
the Win2000 server to prepare the AD for migration. However, our
Win2000 server is 32-bit and the Win2003 server is 64-bit, and the
64-bit version of adprep will not work on the 32-bit machine.

Microsoft apparently does not have a download available for the
32-bit version of adprep. Does anybody know of a source for this? Or
am I going to have to beg, borrow, buy, etc., 32-bit Win2003 server
install CDs?

Thanks for any help the group can provide.

Adil

P.S. You can take it as read that I have filled my MS curse jar with
sufficient pennies to buy a Ferrari.

[CGUYS] Memory question

2007-08-02 Thread Paula Minor
My iMac G5 iSite has been having frequent "blue screen"
equivalents.the transparent gray box that tells me OSX has quit
and I have to shut down. I thought I had found the problem when I
unplugged 2 of the 4 external hd's I have on it. But I got up this
a.m. to a new "error" msg. Instead of the gray box there were black
lines with white text coming across from the upper left corner. Most
of the message meant nothing to me but there was one line that seemed
to indicate a memory failure. Is there a way to test the memory on a
Mac without having to buy new memory and install it, only to find
that wasn't the problem?
When watching my system stat monitors, I see that the cpu is
frequently at 100%+ usage (and programs are CRAWLING). I suppose
there could be a hard drive problem. Since it was getting full, I
have moved iTunes and Photos to an external drive so I could free up
space on the main hd, thinking that OSX needed empty space to use as
memory??? Is this wrong? But it still shuts down on me. This
usually occurs over night when it's been sitting but was supposed to
go to sleep and didn't. Occasionally it happens when I'm working on
it. Also, the longer it's on (and Camino, especially, has been
running with multiple tabs for a long time), the more likely the cpu
is to be running at 90-100%.
If I replace this iMac with a MacPro tower, my husband would like
this machine but I don't want to give him one that is unreliable as
he is FAR more easily frustrated than I am!!;-) So, I still need to
figure out what my problem is. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

[CGUYS] More MacPro tower questions

2007-08-02 Thread Paula Minor
If I get a MacPro with 2 drivesone with OSX of course.can I
put Windows on the second drive and use Parallels or boot camp to
run it? If I have it on it's own drive, will the Mac drive still be
at risk of infection if the Windows part gets a trojan infection? I
haven't put Windows on my laptop because I just didn't want to risk
contaminating it since there is just the one hard drive.

Thanks

Re: [CGUYS] Comcast New Legal Policy / Co-incidental Loss of Service? Restored

2007-08-02 Thread Paula Minor
Service restored. Problem was Comcast had intentionally
disconnected me from the pole according to the tech that arrived
promptly at 5 pm for his 11 to 2 pm appointment window. I recall a
saying something like "Never attribute something to malice when
mere incompatence will suffice." They are giving me a big $20.00
credit for the inconvenience.

I opted out last night. Still on so far. Seems to me they should
worry about a lawsuit if they purposely disconnect someone who has
opted out of their little scheme when they give you the option of
doing so.

Re: [CGUYS] Speech recognition software

2007-08-02 Thread Daniel Else
I beg to differ. This software is able to distinguish among homonyms with a
high degree of accuracy, and as stated earlier, it learns through experience.
Worst case, someone might use it to repeat interviews into the computer - which
would still save a boatload of time and effort.

I have used it for about 4 years and it is so accurate that I have to ask
someone else to proofread - there are so few errors that I skip right over them.

The input has to be of fairly high quality, of course, so a tape made on the
bus or an airport runway might need to be dictated into the machine, but I find
that kind of irritation necessary whether I'm transcribing a tape manually or
re-dictating someone else's speach into the computer.

I'd have to see it to believe it. Even if it got the sounds right 100%
of the time (highly unlikely), there's simply no way it could deduce
homonyms correctly, which would be needed for proper punctuation at
least.

I don't see any way of doing this project with any degree of accuracy
short of having live humans do it. And even then there will be many
spots where they'll have to back up and repeat parts ("What did he
say?").

Re: [CGUYS] Speech recognition software

2007-08-02 Thread Daniel Else
Dragon used direct digital recording Line-in input since at least v. 6,
which was my first cut. I'm still using v. 8, which was the first to
advertize an ability to use direct line-in input from an analog tape
recorder. I hadn't though about direct-from-CD, but since the software
riffs off of the computer's sound system, it may make no difference
where the signal originates. All previous versions required each user
(each voice) to go through about * hour of training the software to his
or her voice and continually improves accuracy by learning from the
corrections made to the text.

The newest version claims to dispense with that training requirement,
and the company also claims to accept more types of input in a variety
of forms. I think that a discussion with their sales folks focused on
your specific needs and taken with the requisite dosage of salt, stands
a good chance of answering your questions. I've found their advertizing
a little optimistic, but not deceptive. The initial price for a package
is not cheap, but the company traditionally offers upgrades to
succeeding versions for $99. There may be a deal you can strike.

There is a feature, which I don't use, that automatically inserts
punctuation into the flow of text. I don't trust it, but then I have to
pronounce every comma, quote, period, and line break. Someone dictating
or transcribing directly to the computer will soon get used to it, but a
taped interview might require later insertion.

about playing CD's in the CD drive?

The latest version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking claims to not require
"learning the voice" before transcribing voice to text. It should
therefore be perfect for your use. I've used several versions of the
software, and I find it excellent (though you always must check for
accuracy). It will probably accept recorded voices.

Re: [CGUYS] Vista a "disappointment"

2007-08-02 Thread Site Guy

Well, then here is one person that likes it.
Vista came on my new notebook PC. So far I have had no trouble with it. I
even like the new tricks that it can do.

I'm not fanatic for it, but I don't actively dislike it. On a scale from 1
to 10, I'll give it a 6 or 7. Is that beyond " particularly *likes*"? You
tell me.

Would I loose sleep if I had to replace it with XP? No.

that the industry has chosen to not do so to its tongue from now on.

[CGUYS] Speech recognition software

2007-08-02 Thread David Turk
Here's the set-up: We have hundreds of oral histories on cassette tape. I've
successfully transferred some of these to CD using Audacity (freeware). We
have several people transcribing these histories so we have written copies. Is
there some speech recognition software we could use to for transcribing? I
know it's not perfect, 7 might not work well with recorded voices, but thought
I'd ask. We're looking at years of transcribing by hand. tia.
