a video on a laptop?

That isn't even in the space of what a modern game requires. It would do to
run basic productivity apps and so forth. The absolute minimum for a
current DX9C game would (to be playable at a decently high resolution) be 2
gigs of main memory and at least 512 megs of dedicated graphics memory
serving a fast (ATI 1900 chipset equivalent or above) graphics card on a 16
lane PCIE bus. That can and has been done in a laptop but it is insanely
expensive. And they suck power like a Hoover eats dirt :-).

We're talking an hour, at most two hours of runtime on battery. And the
graphics aren't particularly better than a far less pricey desktop config.
But these things are cool.

And if you have external power, like an airplane EmPower port, these can be
very useful. I recently crossed the Atlantic with my trusty IBM T41, I got
two hours out of it before the battery was depleted playing a not too
cutting edge game (but still at maximum spec for the machine). I guess it
depends on what you're doing. I wouldn't actually buy a gaming laptop but
one would have been nice on this trip.

Provided it could have been hooked into the airplane power supply.

If you are not playing games etc. there is no need for this overkill, but
that is what Vista wants!!!

I bet the day MS announces that XP will no longer be sold, there will be a
run on stores to stock up on copies of XP.

I'm not sure how long 48 Volt Battery powered copper lines are going to
remain viable. ATT for example now has its fiber to a node setup and
then copper from the node. If the power failed, you would still be
dependent on a rather small emergency power plan and the same problem.
It would likely be cheaper for Verizon to do the same thing in cities,
run fiber most of the way, then skip wiring the rest. It would however
leave you without phone service in a relatively short period of time
during a power failure.

The easy solution is to have a 2nd phone line, you don't need long
distance service or even touchtone service, just a phone that doesn't
require electricity to work. When you get FIOS, just leave the 2nd line
as is and you've still got copper running to the home in case you hate
FIOS. Me personally, I want FIOS, the people I know with it have better
and quieter phone service than I have with copper and their internet
service works better than mine too. Besides I also know folks with
cable phone provided, they face the same problems as someone with FIOS.

Re: [CGUYS] FIOS

2007-08-07 Thread b_s-wilk
I spoke to someone who got FIOS, hated it--not as promised, and was told
that he couldn't go back to POTS. Since FIOS isn't even necessary for
high speed broadband, and is very expensive, it appears to be a really
bad deal. His phone/broadband bill is more than 3x what he had and he's
stuck with it.

The lame battery backup is the kicker. 24 hours isn't enough. I wouldn't
rely on FIOS for my phone service unless they included a battery backup
powered by a PV solar panel, so I wouldn't lose my phone during the next
big storm. Our power was out for 1/2 day last week, and that wasn't much
of a storm. Naturally, our POTS phone worked the entire time, as it did
when we lost power for 4 days after a hurricane and flood a few years ago.

FIOS is another technology designed to get you to pay more for what you
should be able get now for a lot less. A new fiber optic system in the
Mediterranean is designed to carry 92 terabits per second. Can we get
50Mbps here soon? At $20-$30/month? I'll take that.

It's not that I would switch from FIOS for data services but I don't
trust the fiber phone lines in an emergency where the power is lost.
I want my plain old copper phone lines to stay.

The FIOS phone is powered in your house. There is a small battery
backup in the system that will keep your phone going for a few hours
but after that nothing.

The POTS- plain old telephone service is powered by the phone company
and tends to stay up in emergencies better than the power grid. The
phone company is good at keeping the phone system running. When we
lost power for around 24 hours in the Hurricane a few years ago the
phone worked.

Probably not until Christmas.

As an "upgrade" to an existing XP machine, no matter now hot, Vista
IMHO makes no sense whatsoever at this time.

I would not want to rely on something that needs power line power in
this area, for phone service. Even if I get Internet phone service
(unlikely) in the area and I sign up, I will still keep a POTS for backup.

So right.

If someone does not like somebody else's answer then they should respond
by providing an answer that they think is better.

DO NOT attack the person.

DO NOT tell someone that they have no right to answer questions.

STAY TO THE TOPIC!

The first few responses to your post were roughly in agreement. Vista is
OK on new computers, but an upgrade could cause problems and Vista offers
no compelling features.

Does anyone want to point out a compelling Vista feature? I think the
people who turned this thread into a pissing contest owe us a proper

Someone telling me to shut up is especially funny.

Re: [CGUYS] replacement for iPhoto

2007-08-07 Thread Jordman
I've been using GraphicConverter for many years (since OS9 days) to mess
with pictures. It seems to me to be very powerful and I like the way it
works.

http://www.lemkesoft.com/
I think they've done a great job with the software and they are very
responsive if you ever have a problem. You can try it for free and pay
for it if you think it's worth it. I did.

I also don't like the way iPhoto works. It's like iTunes in that
everything is in the library. But I guess that way of thinking is the
future to some.

Wayne Dernoncourt wrote:

I tried iPhoto and think it's awful. All the pictures always
seem to remain in the library even after they are categorized.
I do edit some of the pictures, cropping and resizing (make
some for web shots, some for thumbnails for bigger links - sort
of like story boards, etc. for how I think)

I find that keeping links to all of the pictures in the main
library as well as any category to be a bit distracting. Is
there something out there that is better? I've heard about
Photo Shop Elements. I'm pretty sure I have no need for full
Photo Shop, maybe if I actually start getting serious with a
camera, but not right now. I've also heard of Aperture.

Sweetie also wants to start fooling around with digital
photography using her camera(s). Is the Windows version of
PS Elements comparable to the Mac version? Could we help
each other out?

>I agree. Who here actually thinks any of the criminal ideas coming from

That's not fair. I have to agree that some of you here are very biased
and won't give MS credit for anything.

For one, I think the deal where computer manufacturers had to pay a fee
for Windows on every computer they manufactured, even on machines they
shipped without Windows was very clever and original. I think it
effectively suppressed manufacturers offering Linux as an option. I think
that was very original.

I think the invention that the web browser was an integral part of the
operating system was not only original, but extremely daring. If someone
had proffered such a legal strategy to me I would have laughed them out
of my office. What did I know? They managed to make that one stick. And
then somehow they were able to roll out IE 7 and I think they hypnotized
the regulators. I wonder how they did that? Very impressive.

Would you mind briefly elaborating a bit re: Bridge and Organizer. About
what they do/ how they work, strengths and weaknesses? & how much do
they cost?

I use Picassa 2 now and although it is pretty good & efficient in ways,
it is clumsy, confusing and laborious in others... I wouldn't mind
paying a moderate amount for something better but can't figure out what
that would be. I've heard about Bridge & Organizer.

I tried iPhoto and think it's awful. All the pictures always
seem to remain in the library even after they are categorized.
I do edit some of the pictures, cropping and resizing (make
some for web shots, some for thumbnails for bigger links - sort
of like story boards, etc. for how I think)

Re: [CGUYS] Microsoft accounting express 2007 ?

2007-08-07 Thread Roy A. Ackerman, Ph.D., E.A.
Well, for starters, the express version is free. So, that should certainly
make it worth the price.
The problem with the free version is the reports are not complete. But, if
you know how to access the data with Excel, you can do almost anything.
Integration with Office beats QuickBooks hands down. Payroll can be manual
(free) or via ADP ($ 169/y and you do the reporting or per payroll and
person and they do the reporting).
My clients are using the Accounting 2006 or 2007 PAY versions and love it.
I have three friends who are using the FREE version.

Re: [CGUYS] replacement for iPhoto

2007-08-07 Thread Ed Whipple
The current Mac version of Photopshop Elements is Version 4. It includes
Adobe Bridge, my favorite image management program. Bridge also comes with
the PC version of Photoshop CS2 and later.

The PC Version of Elements is Version 5 and includes a function called the
Organizer that I won't even mention in my Elements class. It does not
notice any changes in your image masnagement that may have happened outside
of Organizer.

For the Mac, I suggest Elements 4 with Bridge. For the PC, you might want
to check out Picasa2 from Google. It's free.

Check www.adobe.com to see what they have in the way of trial versions.

And remember, Photoshop doesn't cost any more than a Walmart-grade deer
rifle or a Bernini sewing machine.

Re: [CGUYS] Vista or XP back to topic

2007-08-07 Thread mike
One other suggestion might be to get another drive and dual boot windows xp
and Vista till you decide. I still think Vista is a little troublesome for
users who know what they are doing in windows. One of the things that
bugged me, albeit very small, was that every time i opened my tv app vista
would switch from aero to basic. Insignificant I know, but annoying. I
also use a windowshade feature built into windowblinds constantly. Got used
to that on my mac and I can't get along without it. I haven't found a
similar feature for Vista. But it's little things like these that add up,
that make Vista less usable even with the bonuses it does seem to bring in
the improved interface and handling of media content. Most the problems
that I hear about with Vista is along these lines, personal quirks, not real
problems in the OS.

I gave a perfectly correct answer. I said I did not like Widgets -- both
Apple's & MS's. I'm allowed to not like Widgets. It is also accurate to
note that MS copied heavily from Apple and that Vista does not really
offer much over XP. The PC magazines have written about this so I'm not
the only one saying this. It is you who came back with the touchy Windows

Re: [CGUYS] Vista or XP

2007-08-07 Thread mike
You can turn off the nagging security warnings, but they are there for a
reason. For the most part, it is true that most of the compelling reasons
to upgrade were removed to get Vista out. While it is more secure, the real
security lies in 64bit Vista which is just about useless to most users.
Vista is easier to use with movies and pictures, more features, but a lot of
these features can be found in third party apps on XP. I found the move to
Vista to be a lot like moving to XP from 2k. It was hard to go back to 2k
after using XP for awhile. Things were just a bit easier to use. I
installed Vista a few times since before it was on wide release, but always
went back, just one or two small items that it wouldn't let me do. If you
are a power user, the only reason to do it, is DOING it in itself. But if
you are a power user you also have worked out the best ways to do things on
XP and may not want to fuddle around with Vista. It's just fine for those
buying new systems with it already installed, but I'd wait if you want it to
be your daily use OS.

And no, they didn't copy OS X widgets, all things don't come from Apple,
Tom.

Microsoft needs the money. Isn't that enough of a reason?

As I recall, most of the compelling reasons to upgrade were dropped in
order to get the thing to ship. IE 7 would be a good reason, but you can
download that for XP. The nagging security warnings I can do without.
They copied Apple's Widgets, but I hate Apple's Widgets. I just reviewed
Window's Magazine's "20 Reasons" and I didn't see anything compelling.

Do you want this for work of just for *e*n*t*e*r*t*a*i*n*m*e*n*t*?

Re: [CGUYS] Memory question

2007-08-07 Thread b_s-wilk
But, would the flash things running overnight on a Mozilla type browser cause OSX to close?

Mozilla's browsers have had a memory leak bug on and off for a long
time. The leak can cause the browser to crash, but I haven't seen it
crash OS X. [Mozilla doesn't install anything in root.] Running Flash
uses a lot of memory and "magnifies" the memory leak.

Have you tried to run X on another account? As admin, you'll be able to
use your files. Does the second account crash? Which maintenance
utilities have you used? I've found Yasu works well for my Mac,
http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/, but OnyX can be more helpful and
fun, http://www.titanium.free.fr/ [and dangerous].

[CGUYS] replacement for iPhoto

2007-08-07 Thread Wayne Dernoncourt

Re: [CGUYS] MacBook Pro not remembering settings

2007-08-07 Thread Michael Moser

I established another account and it exhibited the same behavior.
I think this is a hardware issue or something to do with the root
OS. What d'you think?
BTW the battery was just replaced, because the previous one was dying
without much load with no warning. The new battery is otherwise
working very well.

This behavior started with the old battery and continues.
I thought it was an issue caused by the old battery, but with all the
resets, etc. I think anything residual from the old battery should
have been removed.

[CGUYS] Terminal Message Quandry

Below is a Terminal message that I received after

that:
1. The file was found, removed, then the machine
was checked to see if it was removed, and it was.

OR

2. The file was never found.

Thanks.

Re: [CGUYS] Vista or XP

2007-08-07 Thread Michael Wosnick
Chris (and Rich)

I don't think I would have any problems from a technology point of view. My
machine is pretty robust and has 2 Gigs of RAM, a good ATI Radeon graphics card
and 3 SATA hard drives. Although I do not have a duo core processor, my
pentium is an HT version so not too bad.

What I am really interested in knowing is WHY (or why not) should I consider an
upgrade to Vista, as in what will it allow me to do better, other than have
lots of more interesting eye candy in the way it looks and feels.

Yes, I think Rich is right. I like Vista a lot, but I would not upgrade from XP
to Vista
on an existing machine unless it's a screamer with lots of memory and a
top-notch graphics
card. Better to wait until you're ready for a new system and then get one
that's intended
for Vista from the git-go.

Have been off the list for an extended period and have just returned and
would like some insider advice. I know that reams have been written about
Vista vs. XP but wondered if some of the regulars here had a CONCISE
recommendation to make re: why (or why not) I should upgrade from XP Media
Center to Vista.

I would not recommend upgrading an XP computer to Vista UNLESS.

1. Your computer is a late model with plenty of RAM and a fast Hard disk
2. Your video card has at least 256Meg of ram (if you really want to use Aero)

Vista is best run on a powerful Pentium 4 dual processor with a
really minimum of 1 gig of RAM. 2gigs is better.
Most on-board Video motherboards just won't cut it very well.
Separate video cards with 256 meg of ram work so much better. Maybe
the on-board video motherboards will catch up but most are not there yet.

All in all, I purchased a new toshiba Laptop with 2gigs ram, Centrino
Dual processor with 2 160Gigabyte Sata hard disks. Works great and I
am very pleased with it's performance.

For the Evangilists: I am waiting for the new Leopard OS and the new
MacBook Pro's to come out in a couple of months before I jump back
into the Mac fray. I used to have a Mac Mini but sold it before the
intel mac's came out..

Bottom Line: don't upgrade just be be upgrading. Get a new machine
designed to run Vista with lots of ram and good video.
