Re: [CGUYS] Phone or PDA
It may not be the unit- it is often your cellular provider that turns off WiFi- Verizon comes to mind. So, from what I recall, the 700 does have WiFi- if your vendor is NOT Verizon. I think you need to have ATT service or reprogram the device to have WiFi (NOTE: Verizon and Sprint refuse to accept reprogrammed devices). Eschew Obfuscation This is a reply from: Roy A. That just bears out what I said. We show 267 active members (out of 868), and in the month of July there were 4,308 posts! Of course, that doesn't count the shoutbox or chatroom or PMs. On 8/29/07, Alvin Auerbach [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Tony, thanks for your reply. Alvin I've never had that specific problem, but my Yahoo account has been hacked twice making it impossible for me to do ANY moderating on my list for long periods. I didn't think AOL did public groups. The alternative is Google Groups I believe. I'm only in one; they seem the same. I run a neighborhood web forum up here in WV, and IMHO free mailing lists are not a great way to engender a sense of community. Re: [CGUYS] YahooGroups Problem - Please Help
Alvin - I run two lists on YahooGroups, one with about 700 subscribers. What has worked for me is to NOT moderate subscriptions but instead to moderate posts from all new members (I think that this lasts 6 months). When spammers and/or others who are inappropriate to the group post their first messages, I reject their message, unsusbscribe them, and then ban them. Not exactly the highest-tech solution but it works for me and it might for you. Presumably, if someone outside your neighborhood subscribes, it's not with the intention of lurking but rather of selling something, etc. and they will probably show themselves right away. Good luck. [CGUYS] Change in Terminology AND broken ibooks
I don't know why anyone contributing or receiving this list could complain about the value of information we get. That said, I did it! As a tip to the other loyal viewers- like Betty suggested, frequent returns to the Apple store list are rewarded. By getting up early and returning to the site, I found a bunch of new stock and purchased the one I wanted. Thanks all! Arnold --Betty said--- I took my iBook to the Apple Store today and they don't have a 'special tool' to fix the broken plug tip. However, at our Mac club meeting I got a terrific suggestion--dental tools. You know that scary looking narrow curved hook think that they use to clean between teeth? I'm calling my dentist tomorrow to see what kind of old tools he has that might remove the broken plug tip. As for the online Apple store, the stock in the tag sale changes constantly. It took two weeks to get the black video iPod my husband wanted, at a super discount. If you don't get the item you want today, check back tomorrow several times. The Mac you want WILL appear in the list soon. As for your broken headphone jack, you can use a USB Griffin iMic instead. [CGUYS] lcd/dlp/plasma
Ok, the time may be upon me. My wife has finally at long last, after much debate, and silence on the subject agreed to go *look* at a new tv. A discontinued sharp aquos is looking like the likely buy. 1299 gets us a 42 lcd at max 1080p resolution. Any thoughts on real world lcd vs plasma is welcome. I've heard a LOT of bad things about DLP so unless someone can debunk the bad things i've heard about that technology, I'll probably stick with LCD or Plasma. I'm also wondering just how bad a standard signal would look on an LCD. We probably won't be getting the upgraded box for sat. just yet so we will only get over the air HD. I've also got a pc i'll be hooking up as well as a progressive dvd player. Oh you will be very surprised at how nicely the signal (ordinary) looks on a new LCD TV. We just got one this year and it is sharp and nice. Re: [CGUYS] lcd/dlp/plasma
P.S. I should have mentioned that an LCD screen currently becomes very expensive if larger than about 40 - 45 inches. Thus, a plasma TV costs less for a larger screen than approximately this size. Second, I should have mentioned that the manufacturer of the rear projection TV that my daughter bought claims a horizontal viewing angle of 70 degrees on each side of perpendicular, and a vertical angle of 30 degrees each side of perpendicular. I did not actually check this angle out at her house, but could easily see that the horizontal viewing angle is far greater than some rear-projection TVs that I have seen in years past; some of these required nearly a head-on view to get full brightness and contrast. Third, I should have mentioned that I don't own an HDTV. I am waiting until Xmas 2008 or until Feb. 2009 to make a choice. Therefore, my opinion previously expressed is based on shopping at local stores on the IEEE article. The lamp warranty was a big factor in my daughter's choice of the DLP TV, as well as her desiring a very large screen. Robert wrote: My two cents. If it is a choice between an LCD or a plasma, I would choose LCD. This opinion is based on a lengthy article in the IEEE Spectrum magazine of 1/2 to 1 year ago reviewing the available HDTV display properties. According to that article, the LCD has an expected lifetime of 5 -- 7 years whereas the plasma display is about 4 years or so. The plasma display gradually gets dimmer and changes color from day one but is not noticeable for about the first 4 years when incorrect colors become a problem. In addition, the plasma is bulky and requires a lot of energy. The article suggested that the plasma technology would fade away as newer technologies become available. The LCD suffers from failure of the backlight. There is a coming technology that provides an individual backlight for each crystal (pixel) that is promising but AFAIK has not arrived on the market yet. My daughter bought a 61 rear projection HDTV a few weeks ago after doing quite a bit of research. I am surprised how much improved the display is from those I have seen in the past and how thin the display is. It's depth is 15 inches and weighs 75 pounds. The problem with the projection TV is burnout of the lamp. This occurs in about 4 -- 5 years and is expensive to replace if possible -- on some models the lamp can't be replaced. She got an extended warranty that covers lamp replacement for 6 years at a cost much less than the cost of the lamp. In case you're interested, the model my daughter chose is a Samsung HL-T6187S * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? There will be cheap converter boxes, and in fact there's a mandate to offer one free box per household (that requests one). However, at this point I wouldn't buy a new TV that doesn't specifically offer the new ATSC tuner. On 8/29/07, Rev. Stewart Marshall [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I just looked it up. It is the conversion of Analog to Digital that is being mandated by 2009. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] lcd/dlp/plasma
No need for that Mike. Do this. Find out what you wife's favorite movie is. Take her to the store you are considering buying the TV at. Have them hook up the DVD player to both a SDTV (similar to what you have at home) and the LCD TV you are considering buying. Once she sees the difference at what the movie looks like she will probably be OK with it. Stewart At 09:10 PM 8/29/2007, you wrote: Thanks for the quick input...looks like i will be going for LCD. Re: [CGUYS] YahooGroups Problem - Please Help
Yes there is, you have to know how Yahoo does it. (Believe me they had me stumped too until the other moderator of our group caught it.) Go to invite people just like you normally would. Scroll down to the bottom. It says, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/daystar//group/daystar/subs_addAdd Members from an existing email list. Click this and then you will do a direct add, however you are limited to how many times you can do this a day. Stewart At 09:30 PM 8/29/2007, you wrote: Sue, I am pretty sure there is no way in Yahoo groups to directly add people. I like your suggested work around of inviting people who you see in the email request queue. You can put in a note that this is part of your double opt-in approach g. Sue, Potential members -- let's say potential households instead: 1300. We have a newsletter which we publish about 3 or 4 times per year in which stress the importance of joining the group. I want and need the Yahoo machinery to do its work, and keep my work at a minimum. I feel overloaded already. :( Alvin At 08:06 PM 08/29/2007 -0400, Alvin Auerbach wrote It's not that we want to control what people write, after they're in the group. Re: [CGUYS] YahooGroups Problem - Please Help
Finally!! A reply from Yahoo! This makes sense, so I guess that I'll stop worrying about it. If people want to join but don't follow the instructions there's nothing that I can do about it (except point it out to them). Thanks everyone for your assistance. Alvin ==Begin Message From Yahoo == Hello Alvin, Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Groups. We appreciate your patience, Alvin. I have heard back from our engineers regarding your concerns about potential members who have requested to join the group via email not showing in the pending members section. Members who request to join via email are sent a confirmation email asking them to confirm. Once this email is returned, they will show up in pending. If they do not respond to the confirmation, they will not show in pending. I hope this has addressed your concerns. Please contact us again if you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Groups.
