Re: [CGUYS] problem with Thunderbird Starpower

2007-11-28 Thread John Duncan Yoyo
You need to get a special tool from Norton's website to really get it
off the machine.

For antivirus you can go with one of the free ones- Avast or AVG.
I've heard really good things about NOD32 but you need to buy that.

For a firewall you are pretty safe if you have a router with a NAT
firewall between you and the internet. Turn on the windows firewall
should be enough for most things. Zone alarm has the same bloat ware
problems as Norton.

If you want more comprehensive anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall eEye's
Blink is free for a year to test out but it can be difficult to
configure. I've been using that trying to figure out whether I could
leave it running on my Dad's computer. I think it would be too
annoying for him.

Re: [CGUYS] Black Monday - to shop online or not?

2007-11-28 Thread Tom Piwowar
Attention K-MartI mean online shoppers! I hear that tomorrow is Black
Monday, the Internet equivalent of brick and mortar's black Friday.

An invention of the media. Internet shopping does not really get into
full swing until the latter half of Dec.

I usually start shopping at comparison sites like Google Products or
Shopzilla. These lead me to smaller merchants that know they have to
offer a good value to make the sale.

I also try to get all my shopping done early so I don't have to worry as
much about out-of-stock items and delivery delays. However, when I have
made last minute purchases I have been pleasantly surprised with the
quick delivery. Last year I made a last minute purchase from the Apple
store on the Saturday before Christmas and had the product in my hands on
Monday morning.

Re: [CGUYS] Blue tooth for cell phone - what to look for?

2007-11-28 Thread gerald
for my devices, yes it is. I have a nokia 6126 and a plantronics 655. the
plantronics has some noise reduction. the mike is planted against my cheek,
and the speaker is crammed in my ear.

when it is on, neither the nokia speaker or mike are on.

when using the nokia straight, I have trouble keeping the thing in the correct
place to hear. all outside noises are transmitted.

bluetooth is probably not superior to hard wire, but with active dogs in the
car, hard wire can be a problem .

blue tooth is really great when driving on I95, trying to read a map, drink
coffee, and take a message.

Usually look up the model and see if it has a compatibility list.

I bought an Office Depot model (Ativa Office Depot store brand for cheap) and
it works fine.

manager showed a bang under hidden devices titled IRDA Protocol which I
uninstalled there. Upon reboot, no problem, but the IRDA device doesn't
show up as a port. I don't find ircomm.sys anywhere. Is there a fix for
this or do I hafta do a repair install of XP which is a pain and often
leads to other problems afterwards...??

Note that, like many things you read on the internet, the suggestion
that removing Norton Antivirus will help whatever problem you're

I was all ready to point you to Snopes.com, but if this is actually

certainly mean I'd have to charge tax if I looked at a computer, but

During the 2007 special session, the Maryland General Assembly passed SB
3 – /Tax Reform Act of 2007/. This bill extends the 6% sales tax to
computer services including computer facilities management and
operation, custom computer programming, computer system planning and
design that integrate computer hardware, software and communication
technologies, computer disaster recovery and data processing, storage
and recovery as well as hardware or software installation or maintenance
and repair. This provision is effective July 1, 2008 and sunsets June
