Re: [CGUYS] External hard drives: brand comparison
Do you have an off site back up? If you have any critical data on these machines you should rotate backups to a secure location away from the machines in case of flood, fire etc. So that might mean another set of backups or burning an occasional DVD of the most critical stuff and storing it somewhere off site or using a remote backup service. [CGUYS] External hard drives: brand comparison
I'm looking for opinions on the reliability of brands of external hard drives, the moderate-sized multi-MB stationary ones that are designed for storage and backups. Specifically, I have a 320 MB La Cie Firewire/USB2 drive (one of the cute little ones designed by Porsche) and a Crossfire brand drive of similar capacity that weighs twice as much but, according to the literature in the package, is pretty much equivalent, functionally speaking. I have two computers that need backing up; I want to use the better, more reliable drive on the more important computer. Any opinions on the reliability of either or both drives? Or is it just a total crapshoot when you buy external hard drives, on what works and for how long? --Constance Warner * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
Recently this past summer, I signed up for my local Telco's 6 mp DSL Internet service. Got the modem, hooked it up, changed the router info to log me in automatically, and I was off to the races one small program. Drop offs. Every so often I would drop off. My messenger programs would stop, and then start again. I was wondering if I had a problem so I called tech support, and they called a guy out to check the lines. Turns out even though I live well close enough to the switch (your speed will drop off the farther you are from their switch) the technician said the signal was not strong enough to sustain 6 mps so he had them throttle me back to 1.5mp. Well that is not what I signed up for nor what I was paying for so I let them know. Turns out the quality of their lines cannot sustain the higher speed. Supposedly they have fixed it, but I am not going to bite until I know for sure they got it. Meanwhile the cable company has come out with 10mps service. I will stick with my 5mps at present. DSL depends on many different things to get a quality signal. Closeness to the switch, quality of their lines, quality of your lines, and finally the quality of their service. We have a small regional Telco and their quality level is medium. Our Cable company is one of the top 5 but because all of the above figure into Cable service (except for #1) that means you may have excellent service with them in location A but lousy service with them in location B. Telcos tend to be more consistent. Stewart At 08:07 PM 12/11/2007, you wrote: Qwest. One of my friends who is on cox cable and lives about two miles away gets regular download speeds of 12mbit. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
DSL *can be* faster. In practice it is often a lot slower. DSL bandwith is dedicated to you and is throttled back to give you the speed you pay for. Cable is shared so your speed depends on who you are sharing with. As we have seen recently with Comcast, it can also be limited in various ways. DSL is usually more reliable. Well, I'm going to have their "elite" level with supposedly very fast speeds. In evenings and on weekends my Comcast connection really drags along most of the time. And I have suspected that they have stopped some of my downloads at times. I was redownloading a lot of files from iTunes and after a short time they'd just stop and I had to restart them...sometimes many times. It will be interesting to see how much difference I notice. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
I have Verizon DSL in northwestern NJ, and the service is excellent, no problems with voice interfering with date or visa versa. Neither Cable nor FIOS are option in my rural area, but I am more than satisfied with the line speed (about 1.5 mb/sec down and about half that up). And since I get voice and data over the same line, the price ends up being very reasonable. In the several years I have had the service, I have only lost service once, when a pole was hit by a car in an ice storm last year. I guess the quality of service in different parts of the country varies, and I am just lucky. Mike mike wrote: I have DSL but not ATT DSL. Re: [CGUYS] Internet Radio Beats Digital
As I understand it, the app on the PC is a front end for programming the Roku. In fact, after I sent it to my mom, I read in the User Manual that there is a telnet interface to the Roku for command line commands. Programming the Roku for the stations directly is very easy. For example, I wanted to program public radio stations, so, using the remote and the display on the radio, I just keyed in WETA and it found the url and I set it as a preset. b_s-wilk wrote: Is the applet for the radio itself or to use on your computer? It sounds like a browser interface for the radio on the computer for setup, like there are for switches, routers, modems. It should be self-contained within the radio instead. Short-wave radios often have a big display, relative to size. My portable Kaito/Degen shortwave radio is tiny but has a display that's bigger than the iPhone or any other mobile phone or PDA. The WiFi radio could have a display like that too, with its own browser. If the WiFi radio had a touch-screen or good menu like Nokia phones and PDAs, that would make it much easier to find and save stations, and create presets of your favorites. Handheld devices are evolving quickly along some very exciting paths. Betty I think I mentioned previously that the Roku site provides a free applet you can download and which provides a web browser interface to the radio to setup and program presets. Check the link to the user manual I had in a message earlier today for screen shots. Fred Holmes wrote: At 11:15 PM 12/9/2007, b_s-wilk wrote: Best feature is finding all the stations on its own. Worst feature is finding stations you like out of the thousands it loads. Finding a dozen or so out of thousands of radio stations on a shortwave radio is hard enough. I'd like to see what kind of listening guide or list they provide for WiFi radio--online of course. It sure would be nice if these things had network (or other, e.g., USB) connectivity that allowed setting them up (selection of the small set of stations you really want to listen to) using a computer, with its large screen and full-size keyboard. I would think that sort of capability would be obvious. Sort of like what one does with a PDA, although I don't have a PDA, so I don't really know how they really work. Once the "receiver" is set up, it surely saves a whole lot of power without having a spinning hard drive or large display needed. * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? At my house instead of fussing with lots of filters I just used one at the head end to split off POTS from the data line. To use the filter with a punch-down block I had to take the filter apart. Re: [CGUYS] Windows to Apple migration?
Step 1 : Install the Mac version of Microsoft Office on the new Mac laptop Step 2 : Move the files from one machine to the other with a USB memory stick or external drive Step 3 : Open the Office for windows files Is it really that easy ? Well ' mostly '. There are some power user differences in features between the Mac & Windows versions of Word & Excel. One big issue in my application is that the Visual Basic add on for the Mac version is severely crippled as compared to the windows version. It impacts one engineering spreadsheet I rely on for critical information. For that and a few other engineering applications I have a Windows install on my Macs. I have NEVER encountered it on any other .xls document. Occasionally I will get a Word document that doesn't display a government form quite right - in much the same way that different releases of Word for windows will not get things right from docs created in newer versions. There is a program made specifically for exporting email and addresses from Outlook into Mac Mail ( I still consider Eudora a better email program for business use but it's an eventual dead end regardless of the computer in use ). The big question is always what programs are crucial to the user. Bottom line is that it's quite easy now to install and run Windows on a current Mac for those things that will not work any other way while using the Mac operating system for the other 95% of general computer uses. [CGUYS] Windows to Apple migration?
A friend who has used Windows forever is looking to move to an Apple laptop. Any recommendations and how difficult is it to transfer files between the two? I know they use MS Word/Excel a lot. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
I have DSL but not ATT DSL. DSL is slower then cable, so if speed is what you are after I'd stick with cable. Also in my case, the line noise filters don't work very well. Qwest will do nothing about the lack of speed, line noise or that I pay a horrendous amount for what I'm getting. Re: [CGUYS] ATT DSL ok?
I use Verizon DSL, so I can't address the service question. As for DSL itself, I have no complaints - fast (relative to the dial-up modem it replace) and so far trouble-free (we've been on it for about a year). Interference with the phone is eliminated by in-line noise filters. Though the data and voice are carried over the same wires, their transmission characteristics keep them in effect separate. But without the filters, they interfere. My big complaint is inability to use the compute to fax. If anyone has a workaround, I'm all ears. Dan >>> Paula Minor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 12/11/2007 11:01 AM >>> I had to call ATT for a question about my phone bill and they talked me into trying out their DSL internet. It was cheaper than comcast cable so I agreed to try it out. Does anyone have any experience with it? Does it really work even if I"m on the phone at the same time I'm trying to access the 'net? Have they been reliable? I'm not ditching Comcast until I"m sure it works but I have only 30 days to cancel before I'm charged $99 for cancelling. If they have a rep for giving you good service until AFTER the 30 days, I'd like to know. Thanks! Re: [CGUYS] Fwd: The Elite Apple Corps
Hank Stuever is a style section "specialty" writer, whose articles usually appear on Sunday. I have never seen him write anything about computers or technology. I do not think he is capable of writing anything of depth on those topics. I suspect his experience with computers is limited to using word processing software. He only writes fluffy "feel" articles. The article has about as much value as you writing about a clothing store and the merits of its fashions, Tom. Thank you, Mark Snyder -Original Message- >The Elite Apple Corps >A Hundred Million Strong, Every One of Them Cool. >By Hank Stuever >Washington Post Staff Writer Silly story. Is this Hank the guy from "King of the Hill" and living on another planet? The Apple store he kept mentioning is my neighborhood Apple store (Clarendon). He is right to say the store is full of people, but that is not any kind of problem. I recently wrote to this list about how well the Clarendon store handled the stampede during the Leopard rollout. Despite the mob it did not feel over crowded and I was not neglected by the staff. I have been in many non-Apple stores where the service collapses if they have more than 3 customers. Apple handled 100s with aplomb. This was not out of my comfort zone, not theirs. Soon the only ones using Windows will be the corporate drones.
