uninstalled nicely.

No question you should be using Firefox 3 instead of IE6, but your
question seems odd - iTunes or Firefox??? Firefox is a web browser;
iTunes is well, something else. I'd love to know what 'information'
requires either iTunes or Firefox to acquire?

I would assume the OP means Safari. It seems to get installed as part of

Like Tony, this choice seems a bit odd to me--it's sort of like saying, in
order to do X you will need either a garden hose or a microwave oven.

In any event, I would definitely go with Firefox over iTunes. My experience
with iTunes has been absolutely horrible. If I were to compile a Top Ten
list of the worst software I've ever used, iTunes would be right up near the
top.

Firefox, on the other hand, is solid; and it won't interfere with your use
of IE as long as you don't make it the default browser. If it happens to
install itself as the default browser (e.g., Firefox opens when you click
link from an email), just start IE, open Tools->Internet Options->Programs,
and click "Make Default".

No comments on this issue, eh? I suppose you'd have to be a serious OS X
geek to know about something like this.
What I find when I Google is that it's:
Something to do with the Classic environment, which I've never allowed to
load on the machine.
Some anonymous app that consumes massive amounts of CPU cycles. These apps
are not anonymous since their icons are right there beside the (null), and
they use the CPU about the way I would expect them to.

This is a new(refurb) notebook from Apple running 10.5, so I wonder if it's
a glitch that an update will fix.

2008-07-15 Thread Tom Piwowar

Me too with FireFox. My PC is about the same vintage as yours. In this
case the fact that MS did not produce a new version of Windows for so
many years is an advantage because your old OS is still quite up to date
(assuming you have kept your patches up to date).

Firefox has never been a problem. It is not one of those applications
that makes bunches of changes to your computer. If it is not running it
is completely off so you have control over it. There are minor settings
it can change, like making itself your default web browser, but such
settings are easy to change. Overall I think FireFox works better then IE.

iTunes is okay, but is a different Story. Apple is trying to show Windows
users how much easier a Mac is to use than a PC. To do it Apple had to do
a lot of fancy programming. iTunes tries to do things on a PC that are
not so simple. Consequently the early versions of iTunes did have some
glitches. Apple haters will constantly remind you of the old problems and
not mention that recent versions work well.

All in all FireFox will be the safer bet because it is simpler.

On the other hand you may really enjoy iTunes. Besides the store, iTunes
provides access to 1s of free podcasts covering a tremendous range of
material. For example it has become one of the best places to learn a
foreign language. There are lectures from top universities. Etc. Etc.

There's also a web site for students (not available to public
access) and Rigpa has just announced that they're going to post
short audio snips of teachings on this web site, so people can listen
whenever they have a spare five minutes. In order to access these
teachings, you need to have either iTtunes or Firefox installed, so
you can download the files to your computer. I don't know why they
set it up this way! I wish they had just posted them as MP3 files
I download MP3s all the time from Live Music Archives (and
continually appreciate JetAudio, which Tom P. recommended on this
list two or three years ago.)

Many thanks for the information you've posted ... it's just what I
need!! Especially that Firefox will import my current links, and
that I don't have to make it my default browser. I guess I'll backup
my current program drive, and then give it a try.

Let me put in my plug for iTunes as well.
I didn't think I would have any interest in the iTunes Store, as I am
purely a jazz and classics guy. But surprisingly, I have found a great
collection of these genres and have found myself purchasing occasionally.

iTunes Store is also great for finding and subscribing to podcasts. Also
iTunes U has some great college courses for free.

I fought the iPod player for several years (Irivers, etc.) but succumbed
to the Nano and Shuffle (primarily for audiobooks). Of course, iTunes is
best for managing iPods (is there any other (PC) choice?) (Another
reason I went with iPods/iTunes was that I just hated the Windows Media
Player!, and WinAmp just didn't cut it for me)

I do use the Radio feature for radio streaming, but it doesn't have the
greatest lists and is hard to add to. Anyone recommend a good easy to
use streaming radio app for the PC?

This isn't an application, but it is a wonderful resource if you want
to find out what sort of music is available online.

http://jrabold.net/radio/index.htm

It lists all the music programs available on public radio internet,
with the times they are available online, and live links to the
stations. I mean, you can find the complete week's schedule for a
program you like, or you can find all the music programs that happen
to be playing at any particular time.

You can listen in real time, and you can also use JetAudio to save
anything you're listening to, to your hard drive as an audio file...
limited file formats available in the free version, more formats
available in the full version.

2008-07-15 Thread David K Watson

Have you tried running "top" in Terminal to see if the process
names show up there? This will give us a little more information
on how deep the problem goes, and it is also a partial substitute
for Activity Monitor. You can read about it at

You could also try these things, in order:

Try logging in as another user or Guest, and see what happens.
If Activity Monitor works for other users, see what startup items
you have running.

Ordinarily it doesn't do much good, but this looks like a good
time to launch Disk Utility.app (in the Applications/Utilities
folder) and verify your hard disk and repair its permissions.

Boot into Safe Mode and see if the problem persists there. If
Activity Monitor works there, then the problem is most likely
due to a kernel extension you added or a startup item.

Finally, you might try updating/reinstalling/uninstalling Audio Hijack,
since it reportedly has caused various bizarre system problems.

Give us more information: which version OS X are you using?
Have you done any system "enhancements" besides Audio
Hijack, such as Application Enhancer (APE) from Unsanity?

that the system is not recognizing their names.
Does anyone know what's going on?

I don't see a "Pay as you Go" there.Do you mean Flex Pay or Prepaid?

And is your plan for 1150 mins per yr. or per month?

What the heck are you doing that you yack on the phone for 1000 minutes a

I admit that I am probably an extreme case. 1150 minutes per year is
slightly over 3 minutes a day. Most of my calls last under a minute. I

2008-07-15 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
I have 700 minutes but that is shred between 4 people. If I had only
myself and my wife to worry about I would have prepaid had for many
years and it served me well.

My middle son uses his Cell phone like a regular phone. He has no
landline where he lives. My wife and him talk daily so those calls are free.

My youngest (when he gets out of basic Training) will also have his
phone as a landline so much use.

My wife and I sms most of the time and that is not a bog
deal. However I must have my phone ready for calls at any time as I
am an on call type of employee. (24x7x365)

Many young folks use their cells like a land line and that is where
the Cell companies are rolling in the profit.

Re: [CGUYS] Tom: "I just renewed my candy-bar Nokia 6010 for a

2008-07-15 Thread db

I use my cell as my phone for business and personal uses.

Some of my business is solely conducted over the phone. Any single
phone call of mine can easily last 3 mins. I generally use between 600
and 1000 minutes per month and that is less than a lot of my consultant
biz friends use. I'm not sure but maybe I am in the middle to upper end
of the cell usage spectrum...

You do seem to be an extreme case on the low end when it comes to phone
calls. You must do a lot pf comm. as a consultant by email.

I still can't find "Pay as you go" plans on T-Mobile. I pay my
monthly bill every month... is that Pay as you Go? or is what you have
cheaper?

Re: [CGUYS] Tom: "I just renewed my candy-bar Nokia 6010 for a

2008-07-15 Thread b_s-wilk
Nokia 6010--like a Shure microphone--tough enough to hammer nails [well,
brads or #4 finishing nails]--great phone, but doesn't do well inside a
Big Gulp.

I gave my 6010 to my husband after unlocking it. He pays about $50 a
year with 7-11 SpeakOut. All of their refills $25 and above expire in a
year, and unused minutes roll over. SpeakOut uses the AT&T network and
has better coverage where we live. T-Mobile minutes are 5 cents cheaper,
but who cares if you only make one or two short calls a week.

I have the cheapest T-Mobile plan using an unlocked Nokia 3220, and an
unlocked Moto SLVR for travel, and am considering switching to the same
PAYGO plan as Tom's instead of the contract. I kept the contract for
international calling--actually, texting--while overseas, but am getting
a free prepaid SIM from United Mobile through MoneyBookers.com as soon
as I decide whether to have a number in the UK or Lichtenstein,
http://www.united-mobile.com/moneybookers/?l=en.

Nope. I'm still with TMobile. I purchased a year's more time: 1150
minutes for $100 plus my unused minutes rolled over. So far I'm buying
$50 and $100 in alternating years so I'm averaging $75/year for cell
service.

Both iTunes and Firefox work well on our old Dell with W2000 Pro and a
2007 Compaq notebook with Vista. Keep both programs up to date and
they'll be fine.

After using Firefox for a short time, you'll be glad to make it your

[CGUYS] Problem with Outlook Express 6.0

2008-07-15 Thread Colin Cody
Today, suddenly my Outlook Express 6.0 running under MS XP service pack 2
stopped recognizing a double click or a right click for email attachments.

Meaning that I can not open the attachments and I can not even save the
attachments to disc with a right click, to then open from the disc.

I found that I am able to save the attachments by doing: File / Save
Attachments. This is not a satisfactory fix to the problem though

What I have done so far:

I've tried deleting all the files in the directory C:\Programs\Outlook
Express. With the intent of copying a set of files from another computer.
But as soon as I delete them the system "magically" re-creates than all over
again. The problem still exists.

I've just deleted about 10,000 email messages, thinking maybe too many
messages could be the problem (I may have 100's of thousands of
messages, for all I know) The problem still exists.

I tried to download OE service pack #1 from the Microsoft website. The
message was that my current copy is newer than the download, permission
denied.

Of course I've shut down the computer (for an hour) and then booted.
I rebooted several times today. The problem still exists.

I have a backup on my Windows Home Server, but I do not know what files or
directories to restore to get yesterday's copy of Outlook Express 6.0 or
whatever the offending issue is.

No, I have not installed any new software today.

Yes, I have Symantec Antivirus running all the time.

Yes, I have just run a "quick scan" from Symantec Antivirus.

Any ideas?

Colin

go here, http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/#Prepaid. Then click on "See

Click on Pay As You Go, expand, and you'll see the cheapest rates around
with longest expiration times. If you use your phone infrequently,
T-Mobile and SpeakOut GSM plans are best.

[CGUYS] Radio streaming [was: installing itunes or firefox ... ]

2008-07-15 Thread b_s-wilk
There isn't one app that works for all streams. Although I prefer to use
a standalone player, usually iTunes, WM Player or RealPlayer, many radio
streams open in pop-up windows in a browser, using Flash as an envelope
for WM or MP3 streams. That way you can bookmark each stream. A useful
resource to find radio stations, their web sites and stream links is
http://radio-locator.com/. Lists of public radio stations, programs,
their schedules and stream links are at http://www.publicradiofan.com/.

Since the pop-up windows have URLs, I can add them to my calendar and
have favorite radio stations open automatically in a browser on my own
schedule, without having to write extra scripts.

Betty

I do use the Radio feature for radio streaming, but it doesn't have the
greatest lists and is hard to add to. Anyone recommend a good easy to use
streaming radio app for the PC?

This isn't an application, but it is a wonderful resource if you want to find
out what sort of music is available online.

http://jrabold.net/radio/index.htm

It lists all the music programs available on public radio internet, with the times they are available online, and live links to the stations. I mean, you can find the complete week's schedule for a program you like, or you can find all the music programs that happen to be playing at any particular time.
