[CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
i have used eSnipe for a couple three years. about 6 months ago, i started to get log on errors for my bids from them. eBay Username or Password Problem eBay reports that the password or username you provided is not valid. It is too late for this bid, but you can fix it before your next bid. The most this is not correct. the error has occurred at least 10 times. when they test for me it works, when they bid for me, it does not work. they send canned replies. i have even done cut and paste to make certain the ebay and the eSnipe username/password are the same. no sense talking to a computer. who else does eSniping? * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Comcastic Broadband!
If we did it wrong we will fix it. I think the NYNEX branch of the company has always been a problem. Management so bad that it is even obvious to a distant observer. Not properly grounding an installation ranks among the most serious of errors, like a doctor leaving tools inside a patient or an IT pro installing Vista. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Comcastic Broadband!
I didn't have a problem and shooed off my installer after he got the outside wiring done because I had a last minute errand that needed running. I got the network hub installed without a hitch by myself. And because you know enough about proper grounding to go back and check their work and correct any mistakes they may have made. I tend to follow techs around, show them where things like the grounding rod are and quiz them about things that worry me. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

no sense talking to a computer. who else does eSniping? I can't answer that, but I do have a questions that I think others on the list may be asking too... Can you tell us why eSniping is even necessary. Doesn't eBay provide all the facilities you need to complete a successful bid? I have bought many things from eBay and never thought I needed somebody helping me do it. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
Try Hammer snipe. What sniping does is make it possible to do a last second bid to a higher amount without sitting there and watching the auction. I use it when I know I might not be available when the auction is coming to a close. There have been quite a few auctions I have lost when a bid is made in the last second that just beats mine by .50 or a dollar. A snipe program can be programmed to the last seconds (last 10 seconds of a bid) to automatically place a bid for you at a predetermined price. Handy not always necessary but can make the difference between getting what you want at the price level you want and having to sit there and monitor an auction all day long. Handy not always necessary but can make the difference between getting what you want at the price level you want and having to sit there and monitor an auction all day long. I still don't get it. eBay already lets you enter a maximum price, but the winning bid is set by the second highest price plus the auction's increment. Thus if the auction's increment is $1, you bid $60, and the second highest bidder bids $50, you win for $51. This happens automatically and very quickly, since it is built into the eBay program. Why use a third party to mess up something that works perfectly well as it is? If you are mad that you lost an auction by 50¢, why did you not bid properly in the first place? * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
I still don't get it. eBay already lets you enter a maximum price, but the winning bid is set by the second highest price plus the auction's increment. Because when you enter a bid, anyone can manually outbid you, as long as he has time. The earlier you do it, the more time people have to manually outbid. If you do it at the last second, no one has time and only automatic bids can outbid you. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
tom, i have been to many an auction where bidding fever takes over. if he is willing to pay at least one million dollars(lets be serious), i decide i am willing to pay 1mil,10and 20 and thirty, etc clear up to two million, because did not someone else think the item worth that much. if you look at bid histories, you will see many cases where some person(usually with a rating of 2 or 4 or 0) bids 10 times in the last two minutes. this is called auction fever. it can be complete avoided if one puts in a bid with 6 seconds left. i first realized the existence of auction fever probably before you were born. i sat next to a friend(a major antiques dealer) at an antiques auction at thieves market in 1962. she sat there and kept saying should i, should i. she kept bidding until it hurt. that was when i realized the value of jump bids. there is also value with the eSnipe because then i keep those idiots out. i know what i am willing to pay, but there is a very good chance that the other guy would never be willing to spend my price plus that extra 20-30 thousand, other than the fact that i bid the first mil. regards jer At 01:57 PM 8/24/2008, you wrote: Handy not always necessary but can make the difference between getting what you want at the price level you want and having to sit there and monitor an auction all day long. i should also point out to you that a very large number of these auctions end at 9 or 10pm..pacific time. i am a very elderly person living in gmt-5. i am long in bed when these auctions end. still jer At 01:57 PM 8/24/2008, you wrote: Handy not always necessary but can make the difference between getting what you want at the price level you want and having to sit there and monitor an auction all day long. Re: [CGUYS] Frankenstein iPod
My 20GB iPod's hard drive died. Since the Toshiba 40/60/80GB 1.8-inch drives are very close to the same dimensions, could the mobo in the old iPod handle a bigger drive? My 1st gen iPod's 5GB hard drive died 2 weeks ago. So I got a Toshiba 20GB 1.8-inch drive for $20 on eBay and dropped it in. Looks to be working fine. And now I got 4x more storage to fill up. No eSnipe still doesn't make any sense to me. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
No eSnipe still doesn't make any sense to me. I think what you're missing is this: snipers would useless if everyone bid their maximum, but a lot of people don't. They just enter a bid that's a little higher than the current bid and come back later if they're outbid. Suppose I've decided that I will pay up to $100 for a Hillary for President pin. Harvey wants it too. He's willing to pay up to $90. He never puts in his maximum bid. The current bid is his at $50. Your way: I put in my maximum bid. The price keeps going up as Harvey drops by and outbids me, and my autobid outbids him. In the end I win, but I pay $91 or whatever. The sniper way: I don't put in my maximum bid. Instead, I tell my sniper that I'm willing to pay up to $100. For now, the clock just ticks. Nothing happens. Harvey is fat happy because he thinks he's getting his heirloom for fifty bucks. But 10 seconds before the close, my sniper jumps in and bids $51. I still win, but I saved $40 because Harvey didn't have time to outbid me. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
Of course, this is an absurd way to run an auction. No RL auction would ever take that $51 bid without asking for more. Seems like there should be a simple way to solve the problem via software, such as extending an auction if a bid is received within the last x seconds.
