Re: [CGUYS] .MOV to .mp4
Well actually, DVD's mostly still use .mpg (mpeg2) files. Usually they're arranged as indexed .vob files, but most players will play .mpg (mpeg2) files. But they won't fast forward or rewind through them. If you want to save yourself some trouble, you can buy mpeg4 Divx DVD players (Philips). File conversions can get pretty hairy, so are probably beyond the scope of this list, but you can find everything you want to know here: www.doom9.org/ On Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 9:31 PM, Rev. Re: [CGUYS] Google Joins Apple to Develop Webkit
Not sure how google and apple are going to work together, there are several other major players on the field with webkit, but they seem to work independent, not jointly. Chrome is probably an answer to the IE 8 beta that is out there with the new 'porn mode' feature. This feature in IE 8 basically renders adsense useless and google has to be a little jittery. Mozilla too is rumored to be working on such features. There is no other reason for google to release a browser other then to help keep control over it's adsense program. The real question is what will chrome offer over firefox and IE 8, yes, I do think IE will begin to matter more because MS is thinking it can help control google's influence on the web if it can control their cash flow. Safari is a non starter in this whole deal. Mike On Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 1:50 PM, Tom Piwowar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > WOW! This is a big deal. Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?
Of course how much additional magnetic storage you need depends on your requirements. I need about 1.5 terrabytes so I have several external hard drives connected to my computer. I chose external hard drives instead of upgrading or adding to my internal ones; there is not really a good reason to justify one way or another as far as I know, but it was just easier for me with external drives. Plus, they are more flexible -- I gave one of my smaller 300 GB drives to my freshman daughter in college to encourage her backups and to hold the music & videos she will soon be downloading like any other college student. She knows how to plug in an external drive. If you are using an external hard drive for everyday storage to augment your limited-size internal drive, I recommend one that automatically shuts itself off when it is not needed (and on when it is needed). If you are using it only for backups or for some data transfer that is infrequent, an external drive that has a manual shutoff switch is better. If you have been happy with 110 GB internal storage, you probably don't need more than 500 GB external. But it might be tight to get a 100 or 120 GB external drive for backup. Comparing $80 with $100, the 500 GB drive is a better choice. (The cost of name brands is at the higher end of the range that I mentioned -- but, who knows, maybe the name brands are no better than the unknown brands? I believe this is definitely true for DVD players that I have bought.) Just my opinion, everyone has at least one. Ranbo wrote: Even if my current hard drive is only 110? Re: [CGUYS] RAIDs ad nauseaum
Nevertheless, many editors don't like the extra step and possible lossiness of Intermediate Codecs or Proxies. They buy 8-core monsters and external RAIDs. More power to 'em. Interesting article in the 8/20/08 issue of TV Technology (sorry, not online). The author complains about all the RAIDs he's ever used (it can take up to *14 hours* to rebuild a RAID with 300gb drives; during that time all your data is vulnerable to another failure). Anyway, he waxes poetically about Grid Computing on a GigE network and how not only can you use the Grid for storing multiple copies of your data, but also use their CPUs to do rendering! Huh? Probably nothing. If you're buying hard drives you'll be buying SATA, and ata100 is a PATA term. Actually, .mov could already be an .mp4 file, since .mov is a container format. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mov#QuickTime_file_format Anyway, you should post your solution for the archives. Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?
Even if my current hard drive is only 110? Maybe I should, at some point, upgrade that as well. Guess getting 500 for $100 vs. 100 or 60 is a much better deal. Any need to go higher than 500? Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?
Newegg.com or Fry's electronics if you have one close to you... tigerdirect.com. Any of these will have sales on various drives. Since your main use will be back up, speed isn't an issue, after the initial backup is done it will be updates. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=414&name=External-Hard-Drives That's the link to the front page of newegg's external hard drive section. Look for good warranties, I'd stick with western digital or seagate. As far as size goes, I don't think you can go wrong by getting a bigger drive then you think you might need.
