Safari has had "Private Browsing" for a long time. When the press oohs at

that they are on "the payroll").

Hardly. Google is working on a new platform for application delivery. It
is MS that is more than a little jittery about this.

Perhaps you should have read the article? Or better yet, follow the link

P.S. You can download Chrome on Tuesday.

Re: [CGUYS] .MOV to .mp4

2008-09-01 Thread Tony B
Well actually, DVD's mostly still use .mpg (mpeg2) files. Usually
they're arranged as indexed .vob files, but most players will play
.mpg (mpeg2) files. But they won't fast forward or rewind through
them. If you want to save yourself some trouble, you can buy mpeg4
Divx DVD players (Philips).

File conversions can get pretty hairy, so are probably beyond the
scope of this list, but you can find everything you want to know here:

Ah no. That only means that they agreed to buy the insurance that Verizon
offers on their inside wiring. The best part of this insurance is that you
only need to wait a month after signing up for them to treat a preexisting
condition for the cost of the insurance. DirecTV offers a similar deal. If
you can tolerate a problem for a month then you can get off cheaper than the
more expensive immediate treatment.

Not sure how google and apple are going to work together, there are several
other major players on the field with webkit, but they seem to work
independent, not jointly.

Chrome is probably an answer to the IE 8 beta that is out there with the new
'porn mode' feature. This feature in IE 8 basically renders adsense useless
and google has to be a little jittery. Mozilla too is rumored to be working
on such features. There is no other reason for google to release a browser
other then to help keep control over it's adsense program. The real
question is what will chrome offer over firefox and IE 8, yes, I do think IE
will begin to matter more because MS is thinking it can help control
google's influence on the web if it can control their cash flow. Safari is
a non starter in this whole deal.

Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?

2008-09-01 Thread Robert
Of course how much additional magnetic storage you need depends on your
requirements. I need about 1.5 terrabytes so I have several external
hard drives connected to my computer. I chose external hard drives
instead of upgrading or adding to my internal ones; there is not really
a good reason to justify one way or another as far as I know, but it was
just easier for me with external drives. Plus, they are more flexible
-- I gave one of my smaller 300 GB drives to my freshman daughter in
college to encourage her backups and to hold the music & videos she will
soon be downloading like any other college student. She knows how to
plug in an external drive.

If you are using an external hard drive for everyday storage to augment
your limited-size internal drive, I recommend one that automatically
shuts itself off when it is not needed (and on when it is needed). If
you are using it only for backups or for some data transfer that is
infrequent, an external drive that has a manual shutoff switch is better.

If you have been happy with 110 GB internal storage, you probably don't
need more than 500 GB external. But it might be tight to get a 100 or
120 GB external drive for backup. Comparing $80 with $100, the 500 GB
drive is a better choice. (The cost of name brands is at the higher end
of the range that I mentioned -- but, who knows, maybe the name brands
are no better than the unknown brands? I believe this is definitely
true for DVD players that I have bought.)

Just my opinion, everyone has at least one.

Ranbo wrote:

can take up to *14 hours* to rebuild a RAID with 300gb drives; during
that time all your data is vulnerable to another failure). Anyway, he

There is no cost advantage to getting old technology. A SATA/300 drive

This is a moot issue when you consider that NLEs edit a proxy, not the

[CGUYS] 2nd hdd capacity in dock

2008-09-01 Thread rlsimon
I bought myself a sled to hold a 2nd HDD in the Ultrabay2000 of my
UltrabaseX3 into which I slide my ThinkpadX31 2672XXL PIVm1.4 XPproSP3
notebook computer. I wonder if there is a limitation on the capacity of the
HDD I could put in there (takes a 9.5mm thick, 2.5" PATA IDE HDD) based on
the CPU (Intel 855PM Chipset 82855PM Memory Controller 8280 IDBM (ICH4M) I/O
Controller) or what? Also, if there is a limitation, then could a larger
drive be installed simply using a partition scheme to break it into several
virtual drives? How can I figure this out?

Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?

2008-09-01 Thread Tony B
Depends what you want to store on it. But it seems today the sweet
spot is probably 500 gigs.

Your real choice is the interface. For average home users, just get
USB2. But for more serious work consider eSATA or 1394b.

Re: [CGUYS] Computer back up?

2008-09-01 Thread mike
Newegg.com or Fry's electronics if you have one close to you...
tigerdirect.com. Any of these will have sales on various drives. Since
your main use will be back up, speed isn't an issue, after the initial
backup is done it will be updates.

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=414&name=External-Hard-Drives

That's the link to the front page of newegg's external hard drive section.
Look for good warranties, I'd stick with western digital or seagate. As far
as size goes, I don't think you can go wrong by getting a bigger drive then
you think you might need.
