[CGUYS] Low system voltage problem solved?

2008-10-31 Thread Ranbo
When tried to turn on computer today kept getting the same low voltage
system message, whether I had other USB devices plugged into the computer or
not, no matter what I did (turn computer on and off, turn off power on surge
protector). So finally changed the CMOS battery and, voila, computer has
started up okay 3 times in a row (last 2 were tests). So, does this mean
those who suggested the battery was the problem in the first place were
right and that I don't have to worry about the computer's power supply?
Please say yes! Don't need any further computer tricks, just treats.

I wonder if hibernation problems have to do with the on-board,
always-on, anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall software? The WinXP Pro
system that is used on a VPN here, where all the protections reside on
the corporate server has no problems with hibernation. The local PC
systems which have the protective software loaded internally seem to
have intermittent issues with hibernation. Just personal observation
without data to back it up.

Re: [CGUYS] Tivo problem

2008-10-31 Thread Brian Jones
The problem I'm having is when I change a channel either through the guide
or the Tivo remote, the channel that it tries to change to is different.
For example, if I try to change to 296 and I'm already on 249, Tivo tries
to change to 2296 or 2 or 96.

I don't use this setup, but it seems that your problem may be in the IR
transmitter/receiver... Let me get this straight:

Your TiVo tells your DirectTV receiver to change channels through the IR
dongle (that you have positioned in front of your DirectTV receiver).
The DirectTV receiver misunderstands the channel requested, and goes to the
wrong channel (with a bouncing 721).

When you use your remote, are you using the TiVo remote the change channels
on the DirectTV DVR? (Thus using the same faulty IR Transmit/recieve link)

Is there another IR device transmitting in the same room? (wireless
headphones, palm pilot, TV remote stuck in a sofa cushion with a button
pushed) Try sheilding the IR link from outside interferance with books,
cardboard, etc., Try optimal placement of the IR transmitter about 18" in
front and center of your DirectTV box.

Yep That's exactly what's happening.

Yes. The Tivo remote is the only one I use.

No other IR devices. I actually took the batteries out of the other remotes
"just in case" one was transmitting when it shouldn't be.

I've never tried the 18" placement, but can give that a try as a test.

2008-10-31 Thread Brian Jones

I've never tried the 18" placement, but can give that a try as a test.

I am sure that you have tried the obvious... rebooting the TiVo,
rebooting the DirectTV DVR, checking the TiVo's IR setup to control the
DirectTV model you own...

Since it is likely that the IR link is the source of the problem, you
might try swapping out the TiVo's IR transmitter with another one. Know
anyone else with a TiVo? I received an IR transmittor with each of my
TiVo's, but don't use either one. Maybe someone near you has a spare or can
swap with you to test it.

Next, see if changing channels with your DirectTV remote works well...
this will test the IR receiver in the DirectTV box.

If still flaky, the only circuit left is the IR driver chip on the TiVo
motherboard. If you have a lifetime TiVo contract, get it fixed (I can give
you the name of the company that can do it). If no contract, consider
getting a new TiVo! They run specials on the new HD Dual Tuner TiVo's
ocasionally.

  Good Luck!

The decision is ultimately yours. While I and others on this list have
updated to SP3 and it's running well, it's not been entirely free of
installation and running issues. You might want to read all the other
comments on SP3 in the CGuys archives to get a better viewpoint. As
for me, I would install it again, knowing what I know now, but that's
me. Before installing SP3, just make sure that all of the other
Windows Updates are installed and the computer is running OK. You are
backed up, aren't you?

If you can get a disk with XP Service Pack 3 as an upgrade my experience
was that that works with less problems. As always back up everything
before beginning this update.

On the three occasions I had trouble I was using the windows update. In
all three cases the problem was with access to the internet using the
browser (email still worked). These were home machines attached to a
router. At work, of 40 some stations that updated none had any
problems. However, about 25 of those updates were done using a disk we
obtained via our university license.

Before I undertook the upgrade I investigated the complaints about it
and decided to wait about six months before upgrading. By that time I
did not see many complaints although, as noted, I experienced problems
on my home machines.

Re: [CGUYS] Low system voltage problem solved?

2008-10-31 Thread Brian Jones
Sorry to differ, but I believe that the 'system clock' they are referring to
is not the clock/calendar. There is a more important clock that determins
the timing of gates as they open and close allowing signals to flow from one
component to the next. Most computers boot up just fine without the
BIOS/Clock battery, but it takes a bit longer for the BIOS to discover what
is installed in the machine, since this stored data is often lost when the
battery is removed. Many of us remember the pre-386 machines of the 90's
that could not even discover the hard drive partitions when the batteries
died, and the specific information about that hard drive (heads, sectors,
tracks, etc.) had to be reentered by hand. Sometimes we had to remove the
hard drive and read the lable to figure out what the settings should be.

SNIP
When the computer's power is first turned on, the CPU initializes itself,
which is triggered by a series of clock ticks generated by the system clock.
Part of the CPU's initialization is to look to the system's ROM BIOS for its
first instruction in the startup program.
