[CGUYS] Wanted: reliable corded ear piece for cell phone
Seems like a minor thing but the corded ear pieces I keep buying for the cell phone keep going bad. Sick of being frustrated, so can anyone recommend a got one that might last a few months or at least a place to buy one? Also, speaking of frustration, any places to buy low-cost batteries for cordless phones that will last awhile? Or do you get what you pay for, basically? Have had hit or miss - mostly miss - on Ebay. [CGUYS] Gmail loading very slowly
Lately my Gmail has been taking forever to load. Think this has happened before. Any thoughts on causes or cures? Is this likely due to having too many emails, even though only using about 10% of the total alloted? [CGUYS] Why Sounds of Silence?
Can't get any sound from speakers. Had this problem before; this time it is not the volume knob being turned down by the cat getting on the keyboard - I checked. Think before I also had a BIOS problem and replaced this at suggestions from folks here. What could it be this time?? [CGUYS] buying at laptop at Staples?
A relative offered to buy a laptop and wants to get one he saw in an advertisement at Staples. Not sure which one he has in mind, but am a bit nervous about getting a computer there, given they only give you 2 weeks to return electronics. Is that a standard amount of time for returns for computers at most stores? Anyone have experiences (good or bad) buying a computer from Staples? *In other words, this virus, trojan or whatever it is could still be lurking and hiding from AVG's ability to detect it? I also ran a full scan of Windows Defender which didn't find anything. Re: [CGUYS] Help - computer seems infected, going crazy!
*Brian, Thanks much for the advice. Before I do reformat and reload my operating system as you suggest, want to be sure I have to go through this. For past 3 days, computer suddenly seems to be working normally, except maybe that I couldn't launch a new anti-malware program (run error) suggested here. Otherwise, things seem to be okay. AVG does report that on 2/26 and 2/27 Trojan horse Generic 16BZFO was found and also the virus vault contains 2 or 3 warnings around that time that a registry key with reference to an infected file was found. There was one other reported infection from a scan back in mid December. Since Feb 27 the daily automatic scans and 2 I did manually report no infections. Does this mean that AVG has found and contained the virus? On 2/26 and 2/27 AVG scan was interrupted before completed and there is a note that the log was corrupted one of those days and an earlier day. The scans since then have been completed according to the log BTW, is it important to delete the viruses in the AVG virus vault? Finally, what are the most likely ways to get this sort of virus, if that's what it is? I do have a back up drive. *Very strange, so far, since turning computer on today (has now been on for about 10 minutes) having none of the problems from yesterday. How does this virus or trojan get around antivirus software and firewalls? Do you usually get it by visiting certain sites? if I need this, will reinstalling Windows take care of this problem? Re: [CGUYS] Snow Removal and disposal.
*Why can't they come up with a way to simply melt the snow in place? I see they have a device some places used called a Snow Dragon which does this but still requires snow to be shoveled into it (like feeding a furnace). Why not, though, some sort of heating device (I'm picturing a giant soldering iron) that melts the snow in place? May need to have some tubing or something similar to catch the runoff and steer it towards a drain or something. Might not work in all locations but could work in some, particularly if it could melt the snow fairly slowly. I imagine a large arm with the device on the end that moves back and forth across a swath of snow. Once finished one swath the device would automatically move a little to the next swatch or controlled manually according to conditions. Crazy idea? Randall * On Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 7:51 PM, Rev. Can anyone verify whether this is correct or just another rumor? If the former, why am I not hearing it on the news or public service announcements? Time (already, after 8 months of fairly light use) to replace black and white toner cartridge for Canon 4-in-1 laser printer. Regular cartridge runs around $80. Once again I seek the wisdom that is so generously dispensed here. My Dell desk top just doesn't seem to want to do anything right...or quickly. When I click on links nothing happens. Sites don't load or only very, very slowly, hence the constipation metaphor. IE freezes up and Fire Fox (which is what I usually use) is having the above problems. Documents also open slowly. These problems seem to have occurred or become significantly worse since I installed the upgrade for the free AVG software on Dec 1, when the previous version expired, so wonder if this has a role. I notice that it now has a spy ware software, as well as the free Zone Alarm Pro version I downloaded maybe 2 months ago (the previous free version didn't have this as I recall). I also have at least one other spyware program running, so wonder if I have too much of a good thing. My question is - I don't even know where to start to figure out what's wrong or how to fix it. Are there simple steps I should take to see if the problem(s) get better? I can't even fix the message that says "Firefox is not able to show the Toolbar." Don't know if this is related, but in Firefox, don't even have the back keys highlighted or functional. Tried to reinstall Firefox but got a message and wouldn't even let me do this. One other thing - the program that is supposed to automatically begin to download pics from digital camera to PC also isn't working (and it once did). Couldn't get this fixed, either. Don't know if this might be related to other problems. Is my computer now like a very old person or car, where too many things are breaking down and it looks terminal?? Re: [CGUYS] Netbooks vs. Notebooks
But from the responses, guess a netbook can't be a full substitution for a desktop (what I have now) or a laptop, if it doesn't have CD or DVD drives. I was hoping to be able to substitute a laptop (which I don't think I can afford presently) or netbook for a regular Dell desk top, but sounds like netbooks would be more of a supplement. Other than the lack of drives and maybe keyboard size, sounds like it could do most of what I would need, though. Randall On Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 11:40 AM, Roy A. Re: [CGUYS] What to look for in digital converter box?
Yes, but what percentage of the time do you end up having to return electronic purchases made online? All this talk of reception problems, maybe a need for a special antenna, possibly roof antenna, etc. makes me think a return may be fairly likely. But maybe there is no real good alternative, as the stores do seem to be out of these and so many other things. K-Mart online shows the Zenith Insignia out of stock. It would be so helpful if you could search a specific store's inventory online, rather than having to go in person or call and take a chance that a) anyone will answer and b) if they do, they will give you an accurate answer. Re: [CGUYS] What to look for in digital converter box?
*I'm a bit wary of buying this sort of thing online. What if it doesn't work out for some reason (reception problems, etc.)? Then you could be stuck with the hassle and expense of shipping it back. Seems like this is something that you really can't tell how it will work - no matter what reviews or others say - until you try it out in your particular situation. For example, I'm in an apartment and there is no option for a roof-top antenna. So hoping to find a decent model in local store, without too much running around. [CGUYS] For want of a USB 2 printer cable!
I took Betty's suggestion and bought the Canon 4-1 printer with the nice $120 rebate. They sell the printer sans printer cable and the Staples guy I spoke to said I could just use the printer cable for my old (4-5 years old) Dell 4-1. Well, after hours trying to get the printer to print and 3 hours more with tech support, nothing I or we tried worked. The tech support guy figured my printer cable was probably a USB 1.0, which seems strange to me, since I bought it at the same time I got my Dell computer and Dell 4-1, and the computer takes USB 2. He did say at some point, after I asked, that USB1.0 cables may or may not work with USB 2.0 ports. So after nothing else worked (including disabling firewall and antivirus) I borrowed a neighbor's USB 2.0 cable and, voila, computer finally recognized printer. After reloading printer drivers and a few other things, printer finally worked, and it works like a charm (so far)! Much faster printing than old b & w printer and much, much faster, quieter than Dell 4-1 inkjet. So thanks, Betty, for the suggestion, and thanks to everyone else who gave input that helped me decide on this option. So far, not missing color. Wish to note that there is nothing in the printer start up guide that says you need a USB 2 cable, and not sure why anyone would simply assume that this is known, given that a lot of people must be in the similar position of replacing printers or other devices that ran on 1.0 cables. Would be nice, too, if tech support would raise this early on in their troubleshooting. Also might help if printer cables were labeled as to what version USB they are. My point being that some of the complexity, confusions and problems the average person constantly faces when dealing with computers and other technology is unnecessary, if a little more thought was given to making things easier and simpler. Call me naive, but this seems obvious to me based on my various frustrating experiences. At any rate, I need to return my neighbors USB 2.0 cable which I'm temporarily using, so any suggestions on where to get one inexpensively, either locally (Maryland) or online? I'm assuming they are all pretty much the same, so quality differences isn't much of an issue. Thanks again ps. it's nice to be able to print again! And to declutter by getting rid of the 3 other printers that don't work! I'm assuming I can recycle the cartridges and toners, so hope someone nearby (maybe Staples?) will take them all back. Guess you should really recycle old printers, but if can't get rid of them on Freecycle, ain't up for driving to the recycling center in Montgomery county. Recycling is another thing that should be easier and simpler, if we really want people to do it! * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Would like suggestions for 4-in-1 printer
Looking at features, automatic doc feeder is important, right? Also, if just have a laptop (thinking of ditching desktop if I get a laptop) seems it would be nice to have wireless control of printing (whatever the term) so printer can be in different location than laptop. Do I have this right, that the wireless control would allow this, without connections with a cable, limiting spatial arrangement? If so, how far apart can laptop and printer be? Maybe I'm over-thinking this whole thing! Re: [CGUYS] Would like suggestions for 4-in-1 printer
One more factor I realize I need to consider - How good is the quality on photos made on color inkjets, compared to having the photos processed at a store? How expensive is the paper for this and what other costs are involved? Thinking it might be nice to have that photo capability. My old Dell 4-1 had this but when tried a few times, didn't get anywhere near photo quality, so assuming the paper was wrong type perhaps. Re: [CGUYS] Would like suggestions for 4-in-1 printer
Yes, I do need a fax. Space is also a consideration; I'm in an apartment and sitting here with 3 printers scattered around, none of which works. Scanning first to fax seems a bit of a hassle, but maybe not too bad. Why do you suggest I have both an inkjet and a laser, or am I misunderstanding you? I guess being able to print photos would be nice but my main need is simply to print documents, occasionally do significant amount of copying (though probably not much more than 500 pages a year) and some scanning and occasional faxing. Do scanners tend to go bad on 4-1s? I was thinking the thing that would go bad would be the printer. My old, reliable HP b &W laser printer bought in 94 finally ran out of ink (cartridge replacement is prohibitive) so have seen how much longer laser cartridges can last than, say, Dell inkjet cartridges. On the subject of cartridges, is it just (damn) Dell inkjet cartridges that cannot be replaced by off-brands or is this standard for most or all inkjets? [CGUYS] Would like suggestions for 4-in-1 printer
I need a 4-in-1 printer and have had it with replacing ink jet cartridges every 50 pages (or whatever the low number is) so am thinking of getting a laser 4-in-1 if it's affordable. Was in Staples recently and noticed they have 4-in-1 inkjets which claim (and the salesperson did as well) get far more pages per cartridge, and are actually cheaper per page (50% cheaper as I recall the statement). Some of the models were on sale, at least that week. I don't think I need color, at least not for current needs. So my questions are: 1) any suggestions for a model of a reasonably priced (under $200?) laser 4-in-1, and where to get one? Is this something to buy online? 2) Anyone with experience with these supposedly improved, higher capacity inkjet cartridges, and if so, whether this might be worth it over a laser printer, all costs considered? 3) Is is it a good idea, if one can afford it, to get a color laser printer, in case one has need for this in the future (maybe brochures, flyers?) 4) Is the print quality on a laser noticeably better to today's inkjets? Please don't suggest a Dell inkjet; I've had so much frustration with the one I have now! As always, I appreciate people with knowledge and experience on this list taking the time to answer such questions! Yeah, but imagine it can be quite a hassle, and maybe expense, to try to deal with the manufacturer if you get home with a defective item. Re: [CGUYS] Will Obama delay switch to HD?
Should add that while tv may not be important to you or anyone here personally, this policy affects ALL Americans, including those without computers, who are invalids and can't get out or do much else, children, those who need to keep up on some local news issues, those whose lives are so stressful or difficult they just need some R & R entertainment (who can't afford movies, plays, TIVO, DVD recorders, fancy entertainment centers, etc.) If we are going to start questioning the reasons people watch tv then we should start questioning all other habits and choices of people, starting with computers, internet, cars and living on credit. Re: [CGUYS] Will Obama delay switch to HD?
If the government is going to mandate this changeover than they should similarly intervene to mitigate the problems this will cause, regardless of whether those problems are truly profound. By an admittedly stretched analogy, if the government intervened to, say, make drinking or smoking illegal, it should take steps to provide for an adequate transition and for programs to help those addicted to these. Some people are, more or less, addicted to tv; or at least it is an integral, regular part of their life, for better or worse. To put people in a position of either losing tv in less than a month or of shelling out maybe $80 to keep watching seems an unnecessary burden, falling disproportionately on those not wealthy enough to have cable, dish, HD tv, nice computer screens to watch on, etc. Let's see Obama, the champion of the middle class and those below the middle class(I dare presume and hope), walk the talk on this. Are you saying that if you suddenly woke up one day - say Feb 17 - and had no tv reception, you wouldn't be very bothered? True, some of us may be more "addicted" to tv than others. Re: [CGUYS] Will Obama delay switch to HD?
$50 for a converter is a lot for some of us, particularly if you have more than 1 tvs. One should not jump to assumptions to readily - I, for instance, have 2 tvs (one in living room and one in bedroom) which I didn't pay for; one being given by a family member, another recently acquired from Freecycle. And the first tv is decades old, which shows one can have something they got years ago but they may be in an entirely different financial circumstance today. As someone else said, this looks like the latest development or maneuver to eventually drive those without cable or satellite to pay for these ways of getting tv, with the usual, ever-increasing, regressive fees and taxes. Re: [CGUYS] Will Obama delay switch to HD?
Sounds like a story (and others here) that the new Administration would want to hear about, assuming they genuinely want input and to do things in a new way, with the public interest in mind, if not paramount. What was the rationale for this entire forced switch, anyway? If they go ahead with this apparently poorly planned, poorly implemented program, some of the blame will fall to the new administration if and when predictable problems occur on a massive scale, and they did nothing to prevent this. Many of the very people so excited about Obama (like the few million recently in D.C. for his Inauguration) may not be so happy when they run into the sort of problems being chronicled here. Obama is reversing course or delaying other Bush policies, so seems it would be prudent to do so here. Maybe we should compile the problems and experiences noted in this thread and send to the Obama website and FCC. I've heard of some people who, for whatever reasons, ended up with coupons they didn't need. I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to pass these along to others who do need them. Perhaps selling them should and is prohibited, but not giving them away. Obama official said (during transition) they want a delay in converting to HD tv because of various problems, including lack of funding for the coupons. However FCC said (during transition) that delay would cause more problems and the Feb 17 date should remain. Anyone hear if Obama is planning or likely to delay this? I'm hoping so, as don't have a converter or coupon and coupon wait list is months, at least. BTW, if anyone here has any converter coupons they don't need I'd be most appreciative.
