Step 1 is to disconnect all data cables except the one going to your
optical drive. Pull all cards that are not necessary for minimum function
(probably keep the video card only). Disconnect everything other than the
keyboard, mouse, and monitor. If you can get it to start in this
configuration you can then start adding stuff back -- preferably one by
one. If it doesn't start you now have only a small amount of hardware to
worry about.

Yesterday I was pulling my hair out after an OS upgrade on a computer
that had been working fine. The computer would KP during startup or
within a minute or two of startup, but not at the same point. It would
also KP when booting off a DVD, again doing it a different points in the
startup sequence. Eventually I isolated the problem to a SCSI card. The
upgraded OS no longer supports that old card.

OK I get it you need the CDROM to be recognized.

Check the cable connection it may look connected but it may not be
properly. Also check the power connections.

Swap out power connections if possible. Also if after you check the
cables and verify they are all properly seated and connected. Swap
out with a new one.

I know sounds too simple to be true but I have had cables that looked
good but just failed. Also the cable may not be on all the way but
look attached.

Also make sure the BIOS sees it and registers it as a device. It
should be the first master device.

If all that fails it may have gone bad. (I know last resort)

The other drives I added, are not in use yet, on purpose. Only one SCSI drive
is active. That is the one I have been using.

The card is an AHA-19160 and, the active HD is a U320. All the other HD's are
not connected to the power supply or, to the data cable.

Once I can get the CD-R/W to be recognized for the boot, then I am sure, things
will be ok but, until then, I am stuck.

Once you make sure they are terminated, I am not sure how to make the
BIOS recognize them but the old way to turn the drive ID to zero in
the old BIOS.

You also need to make sure you the proper drivers in the WinXp

Simple but pertinent questions.

What kind are they? PATA (old IDE) or SATA (Serial)

The old PATA had to be set for master slave or cable select and on
the appropriate end of the cable to be recognized properly.

I am not sure with SATA but I assume there is something in the BIOS
to select boot drive in a SATA array.
