[CGUYS] Firefox tabs

2009-04-10 Thread Sue Cubic
I have Firefox set to "new pages should be opened in a new
tab". This works fine if I click on a link in a new email. However,
if I attempt to open a new site from my Personal Tool Bar, the new
page opens in the tab that is currently open.

Am I doing something wrong? The only way I can seem to have more
than one tab is to open a new tab first.

I don't have a middle mouse button. :) So I'm not missing something

A laptop? Strangely, everyone I know - myself included - drags around
mice with their laptops, so I *always* have a middle mouse button
available.

As Tom said, if you don't mind using two hands there are hotkeys. You
can also right-click and "open link in new tab". Thing is, you don't
want EVERY link you click to open new tabs, only some of them. Have
you considered a mouse for the laptop?

In Firefox/Seamonkey/Flock/Camino location bar type: about:config

In search field type:tab

That gives you all the available choices for how you want tabs to work.
Double-click on any and you can change the parameters. Confused? This

No, not a laptop. It's a Logitech Trackman Wheel mouse. No center
button--in the center is a scroll wheel. I have 2 of these
mouses/mice/meese?--one for my desktop and one for my laptop. It's
the only thing I've ever found that doesn't wreck my hand.

That's odd. I rarely see anyone using a mouse with their notebooks that
they carry around, only with desktop-replacement ones at home.

All Mozilla apps had click-and-hold contextual menus as a default until
Firefox 3. Even though I have a mouse that can do right/left click, I
like the click-and-hold method better. Dumped the multi-buttons when my
trackball died years ago.

To return that preference to it's proper default, go back to
about:config. Enter "click" [no quotes] as your filter in the search
field. For ui.click_hold_context_menus, set value as true. You'll see
other settings that you can change, like
browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick [not much good for a one- or
two-button mouse], and browser.urlbar.clickAtEndSelects.

You type that into your address box (about:config). But be careful.
Don't change anything in there unless you know what you're doing.
Really, the only options you might need to change for tabs is in the
Tools>Options>Tabs.

I used to hate trackpads. Then Apple innovated all sorts of finger
gymnastics (two-finger drag, three-finger drag etc.) that made the track
pad as fast or maybe even faster for many common actions. I no longer
hate trackpads. (Makes me wonder what would happen if Apple reworked
Vista.)

The about:config window is available when you type it into the URL
location bar at the top of the browser window. Firefox now gives you a
warning that you're about to break something, but do you want to do it
anyway.

If you're worried about breaking something, don't do it. However there
are a lot of good preferences that are hidden in Firefox and can't be
changed in Preferences or Tools/Options. The file is called *prefs.js*,
located in the user profile for Firefox. Back that up first, and have
fun turning things on and off.

Mozilla SeaMonkey lets you set the preferences for new windows and tabs,
but most of those choices in Firefox are hidden. I can choose new tabs
to open in the background with the same URL as the last window/tab in
SeaMonkey, but not in Firefox. For that I copied that pref in SeaMonkey
prefs.js and added it to Firefox.

When you don't know about useful preferences, you probably don't care to
change them or create new ones, but you'll be missing a lot of handy prefs.

Speaking of all this: I thought I found somewhere in Firefox (I think it
was an about:config setting) that tells the page to scroll to where ever
I click in the scroll bar. Sort of a scroll to here.
I can't find this setting now. Could I be mistaken? Does Firefox do this
by default? I'd like to get Seamonkey to do it.

[CGUYS] Firefox tabs error

2009-05-19 Thread Richard P.
Here is the source page: http://www.bbqgalore.com/support/contact

When I right click on a link that turns out to be dead, such as
"Cooking Tips" (http://www.bbqgalore.com/backyard/cooking-tips.bbq),
and tell it to open in a new tab, it opens up a "Can't find this page"
message
(http://avg.urlseek.vmn.net/search.php?tbn=avg&lg=us&type=404&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbqgalore.com%2Fbackyard%2Fcooking-tips.bbq),
on every open window I have. In order to get back to the original
window, I have to go back on each window. It looks like this is a
Firefox error rather than a website error because this has happened to
me on different websites in the last two days.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Win XP, SP3

I do have this happen from time to time, especially when I click on a
string of news links from a news site. I have these open in a string of
tabs so the pages will be fully loaded by the time I flip to them. When I
later reload the "dead" pages they usually turns out to be fine. So I
think this is more likely a DNS response problem, not a browser problem.

Broadbandreports.com has a list of DNS
servers you can use. Switch DNS. I have several "Locations" that I use
in addition to Verizon's [my ISP] DNS. Here are a few of the thousands
of choices, http://www.dnsserverlist.org/.

Sometimes DNS requires that the http://www... prefix the rest of the
URL. Some services add that automatically.
