[CGUYS] CGUYS] Investment Tracking Recommendations?
i have my accounts and my wife's accounts with etrade. i get in with password and rsa time code device. i can get into mine, or my wife's account, but not both at once. since the passcode for her account seems to be about twenty digits or so, it is a real pain to log out and log back in. what is a reasonable workaround? if i partition the hd(i have plenty of room) and put one account on each never mind put one in mozilla and one in ms ie. they don't see each other. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Use something like password safe (http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/) to store your password and copy/paste the username and password to log on. I open different browsers together to get into different accounts with the same company. Helps with viewing credit card transactions where we both have cards, different acct #s, at our CU and Chase. Works for me using Safari, Firefox and SeaMonkey simultaneously. It's in the cookies. Um, you must know of a different radical right than I do. The radical right I know would have slashed spending at the federal level, slashed or outright eliminated the income tax, never would have entered Iraq, would be out of Afghanistan by now, and would probably have a dollar so strong the export companies would be screaming. Not saying any of this would be good or bad, but raising spending to new highs, expanding the reach of federal gov't, and foreign adventures have never been the agenda of what is commonly thought of as the radical right. Sounds much more like the Wilsonian ideal. While I don't have personal experience with these with regard to what you want to do, here are a few that are used: scottrade.com marketwatch.com under tools and research finance.yahoo.com I'm sure that cnbc also has one as well as any financial newsletter such as Morningstar. For tracking investments, a spreadsheet and a web query would be as simple and straight forward a tool for your needs that there is. I like spreadsheets. Google Spreadsheets has a function for retrieving information from the cloud. I wonder how well that would work on getting financial statistics? That would certainly be a great way to leverage the Web. Or you can take the lazy man's approach and invest a set amount at regular intervals in a stock index fund. I think that the stock index fund is no longer the no-brainer it used to be. My intuition is that stocks are returning no better than a passbook savings account. In recent years the value of stock as an investment has changed as corporate managers drain away the profits for themselves. Hence my motivation for running some scenarios. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Investment Tracking Recommendations?
i think the best known fund that tracks that is the Vangard index 500 fund. i think it is the sp 500 marketbasket, less about a half % annually for expenses. since '76, shows 11.6% annual return. 10 year, however, shows only 3.99% return. i do not recall exact numbers, but only a modest percentage (10%) of mutual funds beat the dow or the sp500. probably better than passbook, and more stable than common stock funds are AAA rated preferred stocks. one can purchase one's own stocks for $10 for a purchase of 10k, 100k, or 1m. the problem with all individual purchases is: 1. the bid-asked system of purchase. small investors get the short end of the stick 2. information chain. the big guys know more, and get there firstist with the mostest. 3. the small guy advantage, small positions are taken. the big guy has to buy/sell 10+m for a position. this affects the market. or buy berkshire hathaway, and live on buffett smarts At 09:23 AM 3/11/2008, you wrote: For tracking investments, a spreadsheet and a web query would be as simple and straight forward a tool for your needs that there is. most trades in T-bills to the common man require a very large spread/discount. the difference between the buy and sell price for modest quantities(under 100k) cost one close to 1% of interest. certainly 1/2% interest. the best place to lookand buy for smallest spread i have found is: http://www.zionsbank.com/zd_bonds_about-guest.jsp if you plan to buy new treasuries, then the federal givernment is the best deal http://www.savingsbonds.gov/ you pay no discount to buy. Apparently does not include things like T Bills. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
