Since you asked for other thoughts, I have one. Stop using IE.

PS I've had no great luck with Windows networking recently, so don't
even get me started.

access the sites I want. When I try I get the
message that IE could connect with the
site. Then, once in a while I do get the sites...

 Any other thoughts?

To amplify on what Tom is saying, I would bring it upstairs and use the
cable from the working computer to the downstairs computer. That will
eliminate the cable and the environment and focus only on the computer
itself.

But haven't you also posted about problems getting to web sites with IE? I
would stop using IE for a few weeks and see if that helps, as Tony
suggested.

There is no other drive on this cable. There is a CD/DVD drive as

What letter designations are they?

Re: [CGUYS] Strange problem

2007-05-21 Thread Fred Holmes
Because the Zip drive came up as C:. That's the way things work. Do not ever
install a Zip drive until after the hard drive has been _completely_ prepped.
If you are working on an existing computer, disconnect the Zip drive before
installing a new hard drive.

And the CD drive came up as D:

You might get away with first formatting and partitioning the hard drive, so
that the drive would be recognized by the boot from the OS product CD, and it
would then come up as C:, but the Zip drive likely would then come up as D:,
before the CD drive comes up as E:.

On the other hand, having the boot drive as E: is likely to make it more
difficult for any Trojan to compromise it. And having the boot drive as E:
works just fine.

Why does it do that? Because it is designed that way? Why was it designed
that way? Dunno!

Re: [CGUYS] Strange problem

2007-05-21 Thread Eric S. Sande

That could have easily happened sometime after taking out the old hard
drive that was C:. I have seen it over and over with Windows.

Right. You can (in XP) shuffle the deck with volume letters using
the Disk Management utility, BUT NOT THE SYSTEM VOLUME.

At least not without pulling all the drives and reinstalling the OS to
the base system volume, i. e. HD0:. This is covered here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307844sd=tech#3

Hence your E: drive is now the system volume, which in actual use
is only a problem if the software wants to see C: as the system volume.

Probably better to bite the bullet and reinstall the OS, if possible,
on the computer. Even with the removable and optical hooked up
this should work, you'll end up with C: as HD0:, the hard drive,
probably D: as the optical and E: as the Zip.

My machine has C: as the RAID array, D: as the DVD burner, E: as
the spare DVD player, and F: as the big music (data) HD1:.

The order in which I installed them.

Good luck.
