-Original Message- From: Axalon Bloodstone [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] So which do you use workstation or server? Normally Workstation, but all that has changed now. Actually, I kinda miss the old simple Workstation selection. Since we are talking about this, I suggest there is a selection for KDE, and a separate one for Gnome, as this would make it easy to install ALL the packages related to either one, or both of those selections. Just a thought. -Bill

[Cooker] Can't umount /var
Hi! I installed latest initscripts (-25mdk) and mount (w-1mdk) packages, and when rebooting, I got a "failed" because a device is busy. The /var partition cannot be umounted. Please note that I don't have latest cooker installed, most of my system is still Venus. Is there a bug somewhere, or should I upgrade some (which?) packages in order to correct this problem? [Cooker] FTP daemons
Cooker's default ftpd is BeroFTPD, and I bet the choice was made because Kberoftp was supposed to make the setting up administration of the ftp daemon easier However, beroftpd is IMHO still very difficult to configure, not what I would call "user friendly" or "targetted at the newbies". For instance I still haven't found how to create an user account on the ftp without creating an user on the whole system. Glftpd is really easier to use, and comes with a FAQ and a documentation that anyone can understand. Adding an user to the ftp is as simple as logging to the ftp and typing: site adduser name Moreover, I have not heard of any exploit affecting glftpd so far. And I'm not the only one who likes glftpd better than beroftpd since Linuxberg gave it 5 stars when beroftpd only had 3 :) http://alpha1.linuxberg.com/conhtml/ser_ftp.html The main url is http://www.glftpd.org , but it seems to be down today, so here's the freshmeat appindex http://freshmeat.net/appindex/1999/01/15/916446705.html

I had put /usr/local and mandrake stuff in /tmp and after reboot, was able to relocate back to new /usr/local. Very handy program... My /home and /usr/local are getting to be "personalized" with lots of stuff and I don't want to have to redo after I do another install. Things working pretty good. Haven't re-installed since 22nd or tried the new Panoramix yet. Maybe on the weekend. I'm starting to do productive stuff with linux now and have to search for some nice apps. [Cooker] Panoramix Experience..
I just rebooted after having a look at panoramix. When I got into the graphical part of panoramix it asked me again for my scsi card even though the txt version asked the same thing. Then I get into disk druid. And it can only see the partitions on my first harddisk. The other 2 harddisks where 'empty' (but as I am now in linux running of sdb I guess it is wrong :) ). Anyhow as I didn't wanna repartition everything I rebooted the machine. (I have some partitions on my hdb that I don't wanna fuck up) and what do I notice.. DiskDruid has fucked up my ext2 partition it could see on sda. And that was the only ext2 partition that I definetly didn't wanna loose as it contains my mirror of mandrake.. My scsi setup is like this.. AHA 2940u2w id:0 9.1 gb lvd drive on the lvd connector id:1 9.1 gb lvd drive on the lvd connector (active terminator) id:2 9.1 gb u2 drive on the u2 connector (terminated) AHA 2940uw id:4 Tandberg SLR5 (streamer) id:5 Plextor R820TI (cdr) Wouldn't it be wise to have the disk druid not to write ANYTHING on the disks until I click something like 'done' or 'apply'?? Re: [Cooker] Panoramix Experience..
Hi, I just wanted to mention that I also had the new GUI disk partition thing completely hose my partition table. I have two IDE drives. My second drive had a SuSE install with a bunch of partitions, and one spare where I figured I would just put the cooker root, then I could mount my homedir. Anyway, the reason I'm able to report this problem rather than screwing around re-installing my system is because I found a wonderful tool called rescuept. This great little thing let me manually rebuild my partition table and get my SuSE back (along with all my MP3s and home directory!!) All I did was boot with the latest hd image (with the cooker distribution on another drive which thankfully didn't get hosed). I chose expert mode, no scsi. When the partition tool came up, all I did was hit "done" because I didn't want to do any partitioning (I already had my partitions setup, thank you very much!) Anway, I think I'll wait a few days before I try this again. :) Chris

Kaixo! On Fri, Aug 27, 1999 at 02:08:40AM +, Jean-Michel Dault wrote: I have a few packages that would require an interactive post-install script. Not possible. And not negotiable either; rpm *must* be runable from shell scripts, so no interactive scripts are allowed. That has been discussed a lot on rpm mailing list; and the conclusion has been that the smart solution for that problem is to have the post install script to create a flag file, and when the program is first launched it checks for that flag file, and if exists launchs the interactive thing. For example, MySQL could ask for the database password to create, Frontpage could ask for the name of a virtual host. Those are *configuration* things and must not be done at installation by the root adminsitrator but instead done by the people in charge to manage such servers (yes, on home computers he is the same person; but not on most real life business situations) I haven't found the perfect way to do it yet. Assuming defaults is very dangerous regarding security when it comes to passwords, and we all know the PITA we had with Postgresql over-writing a poor user's database when upgrading. How comes ? If it does that the rpm package is dead-bugged and the *.spec file must be rewritten; could you tell me exactly what is overwritten ? What would be great is a special attribute to the %post section, something like "%post --interactive" that could start an xterm or pause No, that won't be great as that would hand forever updates done trough ssh somemachine -c "rpm -Uv *.rpm" for example. Therefore such thing will never been implemented. Maybe there is a better solution. If any of you has an idea, just let me know. If you really absolutely need to launch some interactive script to have a program useable, use a flag file (tagged as %ghost on spec file to avoid rpm -V warnings when it won't exist anymore; and created by a touch on %post script, depending if it is a first install (if [ "$1" = "1" ] ) or not); and then have your program chack for that file; you can use a script wrapper for that also.
