[Cooker] Install

1999-12-25 Thread FunGuYom

It would be nice to pick the database that you want to use on install. If it
would ask "Click the database you want" and you can choose.

Things like this would be nice for a middle ground between idiot and expert.
The install will ask the user questions about specifics so the user will get
the box made especially to their desires.

I think it would be cool to have an option of a kernel build on install to
the specific machine.

[Cooker] Great Start!

1999-12-25 Thread FunGuYom

You guys have a GREAT start! Everything is pretty much cosmetically perfect,
but the stuff in the background needs some work. BTW Is there a text based
install for this? I asume not, b/c I've only been able to use Video. The
old box that needed the text based install kindof hanged. Thanks from the
whole community!

PS Why don't you guys add the Corel Filemanager? It is GPL. (best part of
their os)

[Cooker] No DrakConf?

1999-12-25 Thread David Hart

Just a quick oddity to report. Upgrading an LM 6.0 install to 7.0 beta
(haven't tried B yet), DrakConf didn't get installed for some reason. The icon
was on my root KDE desktop, but nothing happened when I clicked it. A quick
check in RPM showed it wasn't installed. Seems like it ought to go in by
default, even in an upgrade, especially if it's going to be showing up on the
desktop.
I'm going to do a clean install of 6.0 and upgrade it again with a new
Oxygen mirror. I've got some more comments and suggestion for things that
went a little ugly in the upgrade, but I'll hold off til I can try the latest.
DrakX install is pretty damn sweet, by the way...

[Cooker] Comments & Observations

1999-12-25 Thread Jack Foobar

Dear Sir:

I want to let everyone who beta-tests and works for Mandrake know that they
have done an excellent job with this beta. It looks like your on the right
track with the issue of ease of use; that is currently buggering the hell out
on linux in the arena of adoption by layman.

Upon installing Mandrake 7b, their appears to be no way to backtrack in the
installation process, as was with the previous clones of RedHat6.x. The
choices between normal, custom(3 options), and expert ought to have a more
exacting description of what each means, as in development will install every
version of the kernel known to man, etc. While normal, well.. I haven't
figured that out yet. I think every library ought be installed by default, as
it hinders the compilation and/or install of software if it is not present.
Purists may find it bloated, but as an option for a normal install- I think it
would be benificial. The addition of appending lilo on install I think should
be standard- for normal installations, whereas you add the amount of RAM you
have on the machine. Or, perhaps for the next release of Mandrake, a prog can
auto-detect RAM amount, and insert it into append, if the user permits. That
would be kinky. Anyhow..

After install of Mandrake 7b, the gui under kde is lacking a selection of
menu's under right-click on screen/new/folder-as it is a beta, it's to be
expected. Also shortcuts to various apps and games are not accurate. File
not found is a fairly common occurance. The rpm'd version of Mesa does not
work with current game (Q3,for ex.) releases, and it seems that you cannot
upgrade Mesa without having linked apps choke on it. Upon upgrade of Mesa,
with a standard rpm, no other apps seem to be able to see it as present on the
system. xmms, xscreensaver, etc. This is a problem, but it doesn't break the
bank just yet. I believe lesstif lib's should be included in install... I
just remember that because some apps tend to use it. The autosetting of the
HD or disk or whatever upon install is quite annoying. Mandrake should use
the designation set up by disk-druid, or whichever was used. If you set up
another FAT partion as /mnt/d, then it should use that reference and not set
up a /mnt/DOS_hddx. It a bitch to work-around when the rpm gui tends to not
be able to detect the switch. Upon resetting the rpm gui to the /mnt/d, for
example, where the rpm's reside, it cannot access the new source of rpms. It
gives an error, and cannot install the files. A tad problematic, if you wish
to use the diskdrakerpm gui thing. This is the reason why people still use
slackware. If your hard drive is set up as /mnt/z, then it is forever more,
until linuxconf parts it, /mnt/z. Please allow people who can partition their
filesystems to be able to use the non-idiot proof setup scheme. Make is
WYSIWYG if you will.

The hardware management, linuxconf, res setting Drake gui is excellent. I'd
like to see an expanding on the prog. The hardware detect, lothar, ran
beautifully- since I beta-test for Alex.. heh, just kidding. It all ran well,
and kudos to everyone on the various projects. When it comes to vid/moitor
resolution though.. Corel has something to look into. They mimic and surpass
win9x monitor setup and res change. Very easy, fast, low overhead. The
ability to enter in your monitors hor/vert freq should be allowed via gui. I
still use XF86Setup because of this. The user needs the ability to add his
hardware variable via gui, if he/she wishes. The defaults are never quite
accurate. Easy, yes, but not accurate or to the potential of the hardware.
I'm glad Mandrake is beginning to become it's own entity with all the projects
we've been working on. It's still a RH6.1 clone, but much improved.. much,
much improved. I apologize for the size of this comment, but you know what
they say...

[Cooker] Mandrake 7.0b install on Toshiba Satellite 2595CDT

1999-12-25 Thread root

For the most part, the installation went smoothly. everything was
autodetected with the exceptions of:

Video Card - I have a Trident Cyber 9525 CDT - I was forced to install
to Runlevel 3 and then use XF86Setup to configure the video

Ethernet - I have a PC Cardbus ethernet card, and I was forced to
install without network support, download and install the latest card
services, then I could configure. The included pcmcia-cs RPM was
useless. I can't say that I understand why the card services included in
Mandrake did not work, but it wouldn't even run either from the init
script (/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start) nor from the command line
(cardmgr).

Enough of the bad stuff, here's my praise.

The USB support ROCKS!!!

Your distro has support for the sound card on my laptop (ESS Maestro 2E,
not expected until 2.4 kernel).

Kudzu detected and configured my audiocard without user interaction.

The straight install is fairly fast and easy, but the upgrade took
forever.

The workstation/development/server options work fairly well, with minor
exceptions
1. Server install does not install the kernel source and headers - I
personally must have that for any server I install, but RPMDrake took
care of
that easily.
2. The server install didn't install sufficient development libs to
compile and install Apache. Again, RPMDrake to the rescue.

The security level settings are amazing

The encryption/SSH/SSL support during the install is killer

Synopsis:

After experimenting with RH6.1 and all of it's broken hardware
detection, this was a terrific breath of fresh air. The
application/hardware support was groundbreaking. I have been a Mandrake
proponent since 5.1, and I have yet another reason to sell Mandrake to
my clients. Under RH6.1 my laptop was unable to boot unless I disabled
APM in the BIOS, but under Mandrake it booted right up with full APM
support. The USB interface that I thought I would have to wait a while
for is now competently available.

I just have to say that this may not be the easiest Linux I have
ever installed, but the combination of eas-of-use in conjunction with
the included features is unmatched. I have seen easier installations
(e.g. EasyLinux), but they are usually missing key components (e.g.
Apache, GCC, etc...).

Thank You!!!

[Cooker] Install hangs on second stage

1999-12-25 Thread Chris Cable

I burned a CD from the ISO and tried booting it on my
regular machine, no problem, but when I boot it on my
laptop I get passed the PCMCIA window and then it
scrolls down and says entering second stage. At this
point it spins the cd a few moments and then displays
something to the effect of:

X11Transocket: cannot connet

and then scrolls a bunch of lines and stops at:

(7)ISO9660 Extensions:RRID_1991A

I have to reboot at this point.
The system is a CTX EZbook 700 series with the
Neomagic Chipset.

I think it has something to do with the display,
becuase I also tried it on another Desktop system and
it boots into Drakx.

Other than This I like the new install feature and
look foward to getting it installed to check out the
rest of the new things.

[Cooker] an idea for 7.1+ -- Free Internet

1999-12-25 Thread Gary Lawrence Murphy

I recently wrote an article on free ISPs for OsOpinion which sparked a
lot of discussion about free ISPs who are friendly to Linux, and this
had me pondering "What if we had a distro which offered pre-installed
free Internet for a wide variety of locations?" --- we know Compaq is
planning to offer free internet (NetZero) with new Windows PCs, and it
is only a matter of time before MS does something similar, but our
advantage is we do not need to have one "strategic partner" but can
list any number of free ISPs without offending any of the others.

What I imagine is either KPPP (although I truly believe diald is more
practical for the home or home-office dialup user) pre-configured from
an install section or config script that lets the person select either
a free ISP (if one is close enough) or to put in the details of their
own ISP. As more and more free ISPs appear, we can expand the list.

Is this doable?

[Cooker] oxygen first install glitches

1999-12-25 Thread Simon Oosthoek

Hi

I just tried to install mandrake 7 beta 1, but I didn't finish it yet (no
time).

Anyway, I noticed a few glitches in the first stages of install (with my
particular hardware).

Everything went ok until it got to SCSI detection... I do have a SCSI card,
but currently there is no kernel support for it and the manufacturer is
still working to fix the linux-drivers. (see
http://www.advance-peripherals.com/ for their website, in german)

It seems to detect some kind of artop card (but I can't see it, because the
window is replaced by another messagebox asking for retry.

I have two problems with this:
1) I would like to keep seeing the "detected" hardware (so I can report it
to you properly ;-)
2) I get the feeling of an unbreakable loop in the installation when the
retry box appears, even though I can click on the next install item on the
left. (this should be in there with the retry option, (like in dos
when trying to access a drive that isn't there).

When I do click on the next install item, it returns each time to the
failing SCSI installation. This is really a bug, I think.

When I got to the security setup, I noticed it was set to low by default, I
believe I read somewhere that it would be set to medium by default and that
there would be more levels available (stronger than high, "jailhouse")

I'll continue the installation when I have some time for it, but other than
the mentioned problems, it looks good so far...

Cheers

Simon

Where you want to select it? to install to? for bootdisk? or for lilo?

It'll get better, no worries ;)

modprobe emu10k1 # It's already there

I'll make sure it's in lothar on monday

rpm -ql kernel | grep usb

My understanding is usb still isn't all that stable

Do who to what?

Patches have been applied for i810, and geforce. retest..

Like i said they are there, there just isn't a pretty gui _yet_.
We'll have more, better, and sexier hardware/software setup for the next
one ;)

Yeah they always tend to go well with a machine assembled from the ground
up by the person useing it.

[Cooker] Oxygen Beta - My List!

1999-12-25 Thread Roger

Installation:

Excellent choice of colors & graphics for the installation interface! I
found the installation quite enjoyable w/ them!

1. Some minor problems with understanding one of the options towards
the end (other than these, everything else was very explicit!):

a) Prompt after selecting packages, “Going to install 781 mbs. You can
choose to install more programs. Choose the size you want to install. (UH?
What does this mean?? Looks highly useful or needed tho’! But I have no
idea what this means. You need to specify proper nouns/names of “choose the
size you want to install”. Does this mean that if I choose a larger size,
it just gives me a larger partition? For free space??

b) I’ve got no idea which hda1/2/3 that the “/” install was installed
to. Do I need this to configure lilo? I just selected cancel at the prompt
and it looks like it wrote the data to the mbr of the drive. Or so it
looks. Didn’t know where my “/” install was to install lilo separately
since I have several other distros installed.

c) I have an ls120 for an “A:\>” drive! Suprisingly there is no hack
in this config program to simply select the /dev/hdd drive (my ls120)!

2. Desktop:
a) Glad to see the RPM simplified list! Now I can simply check the
rpm category! (lol) Including the Mandrake h/w configurer, but still needs
work in here.
b) Would like to see options for some Soundblaster Live support or an
option to configure your o/s properly at the install of mandrake so that all
the person has to do is install the sblive driver instead of recompiling the
kernel again. Soundblaster Live card is really mainstream these days and
the simplified drivers are out for basic sound! Here’s the url for the
code! http://opensource.creative.com/
c) Uh? No USB? This is kernel 2.2.14 and found nothing for usb? Not
even listed in any of the h/w configurations except within a pci probe list!
d) How about displaying the kernel version somewhere within the desktop
or the /System/Information?
e) No GeForce Support! ???!?! Ok Ok … it did configure my adapter card
to use the fb server! What more can I really ask for? Here’s a url to a
“patched” SVGA server that will work (successfully I might add!) with the
Nvidia Geforce Card:
http://perso.club-internet.fr/pousson/files/XF86_SVGA_GeForce.tar.gz
   I
see that Mandrake may wait for the new Xfree tho’. Guess Geforce support
may have to wait. However, it did configure it properly for 16 bit 640x480
resolution! Did better than Xconfigurator (or the old version)!

3. Overall:

a) The main differnce that I see in Mandrake 6.0 and 7.0 is only with
the simplification of the installation process. It is a major improvement
within this area tho’.
b) Still am somewhat surprised that there is no usb options or
soundblaster drivers with the mandrake! Because the sblive drivers, users
may goto slackware or something if they have sblive drivers w/I their o/s!

FYI: The installation was a done on a "self built" or "custom
built"
computer. As such, the installation went primarly flawlessly.
