How DO you get mesa to work. Is mesa what is used for playing accelerated
games?

I tried to follow instructions linked off og 3dfx's site (Linux 3dfx), but
glide would not install.

I have been wanting to test Quake 3 with XFree86 4.0, but can't get
everything working that I need.

Any suggestions/hints are greatly appreciated!

hummm ok well the only two things that would cause this would be:

1) If you're running these services out of inetd, I'm just gonna assume you're
not(it'd be quite silly to run these services out of inetd).

2) You simply didn't turn these services back on. Level 4(high) does a chkconfig
task basically turning off ALL services except the bare ones that are needed
(e.g.: network, xfs, crond, etc...) So ya might wanna make sure these services
(sshd and httpd) are in fact running.

You can do this a few ways, I suggest you run 'drakxconf' and go to
drakxservices and make sure these are checked to start up at boot. After so,
start up the servers by running it's script from /etc/rc.d/init.d/
(e.g.: /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start).

Linux Project Exclusive!

If you want Linux to have the power of SCSI at the cost of ATA,
you need to explain your desired uses and how many drives you would like
to purchase.

Reply to this address only. You will not get a response.
Should there be enough interest, there will be an announment and a vender
list with drive models. Minimum drive size is expected to be 60-100GB.

This is a survey, because production/delivery of the drives for the
project is under way. If there is no strong desire for the use of this
under Linux, the technology will be sold or forgotten.

[Cooker] hackgimp revisited

2000-06-29 Thread john . cavan

Geoffrey and Lenny,

I finally was able to test my "theory" and yes, it works. There is a
couple of things to note:

1. Previous versions of the Gimp must be uninstalled before building the
new version.

2. The perl-PDL package is missing a number of files required for
building the perl stuff. I had to add them back in the spec file to get
things to build.

I'm attaching both specs, though the Gimp one is quite heavily modified
for my own preferences, so you probably should adjust it accordingly.
Note that on the install phase, the PREFIX in uppercase is required for
the perl makefiles to install correctly (otherwise they will dump right
into the perl area and bypass the /var/tmp location).

%description
The GIMP is an image manipulation program suitable for photo retouching,
image composition and image authoring. Many people find it extremely useful
in creating logos and other graphics for web pages. The GIMP has many of the
tools and filters you would expect to find in similar commercial offerings,
and some interesting extras as well.

The GIMP provides a large image manipulation toolbox, including channel
operations and layers, effects, sub-pixel imaging and anti-aliasing,
and conversions, all with multi-level undo.

This version of The GIMP includes a scripting facility, but many of the
included scripts rely on fonts that we cannot distribute. The GIMP ftp
site has a package of fonts that you can install by yourself, which
includes all the fonts needed to run the included scripts. Some of the
fonts have unusual licensing requirements; all the licenses are documented
in the package. Get ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/freefonts-0.10.tar.bz2
and ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/fonts/sharefonts-0.10.tar.bz2 if you are so
inclined. Alternatively, choose fonts which exist on your system before
running the scripts.

[Cooker] ZDnet Challenge

2000-06-29 Thread Phil

Hi,

Just read about ZDnet having one of those "cracking challenges" with
Linux vs. Microsoft web servers. The story says Mandrake is on the Linux box:

"Targets for attack

Behind our formidable firewall cluster are three targets. The first is the
Web server, running MandrakeSoft's Linux Mandrake and the Apache
Web server. We'll be using Axent's NetProwler intrusion detection
system to monitor the activities on the Web server subnet.

The second target is an e-mail subnet hosting the latest build of
Exchange 2000 running on Windows 2000 Advanced Server. (This
test will be a baptism by fire for the soon-to-be-released messaging
platform.) Because Exchange 2000 uses Microsoft's Active Directory
as its directory service, we will have a separate Advanced Server
system hosting an Active Directory tree in the Exchange subnet."

Yes, but 1.) no one really uses telnet anymore, ssh is the way to go
unless you can think of a good reason not to, and ssh is standalone. 2.) I
like proftpd myself, and there's other standalone ftp daemons. But you're

Is Kudzu needed at each boot to recognize and configure certain hardware

I disabled kudzu, and everything still works nice :). Think you just
need it to automatically detect changes in hardware configuration.

[Cooker] sparc 7.1-beta#2 install

2000-06-29 Thread T Korte

I installed the second beta of the 7.1 sparc port on my ultra 1 creator
yesterday and today.

Things went ok during both installs, but for some reason it seemed to crater a
little while after the first install was done. Someone was booting the machine
and it just stopped after all of the services started and then sat there with a
blank screen.

I thought I'd try to install it again, as I noticed before it went down that
the / partition was close to maximum. The machine doesn't have a floppy drive
so I can't do a rescue disk. :p

I did the second install this morning, and it went ok too. I had to try a
couple of different mirrors for the crypto stuff, but in the end it all
installed. A note here though - when it gave me a message that "there was an
error installing one of the packages" for the crypto stuff it then put me way
back at the point in the install where it asks if you have the extensions CD.

Today I was using it a bit and then this evening I started to get some
filesystem type errors. I checked the disk space again and the / partition was
full! Just this morning it had about 80M available, so I did some looking.

What I found was that two files had used most of the space:
/var/log/httpd/error_log = 43M
/var/log/httpd/ssl_engine_log = 42M

I deleted the two files and rebooted and it's running fine again. I'm back up
to 85M of free space on my / partition. Normally I run a separate /var
partition but the machine only has a 2G drive so I wanted to save some space
for a separate /usr/local partition.

I have stopped httpd and zope services so I hope that takes care of the problem
for now. I ran the 7.1 beta #1 beta for over a week with no problem so it just
seems to have come up with this release (at least in my case).

By the way, can anyone tell me why on some installs linuxconf starts in a
terminal window and other installs it starts in a GUI? It's doing the terminal
thing in this install and I'd like to have it in the GUI. How do I change it?

Also, is there sound support in this port? There's a soundcard in this box but
all I can get is the system beep - no other audio.

Another problem that I'm having and it was in the other beta as well is that
the display doesn't seem to redraw properly on logout. Sometimes you can see
silouhettes of the icons that were on the desktop when you logged out. I
have even restarted X from the logout screen and the broken up background comes
back. It almost seems like it's not flushing the buffer or something. I
believe I'm running the Sun24 X server.

Well, that's about all I've got to report for now. Any feedback on the huge
logfiles would be appreciated, or on any of the other issues for that matter.

It looks really nice on the big Trinitron screen. Far better than Solaris 7,
that software just sits in the box now.

Keep up the good work guys!
Tom Korte
