Did not work!

So, I mv'ed wget.mo to some "safe" spot. But I don't really want to do
this. Could you come up with a solution that does not make me delete the
german localization of wget?

[Cooker] Re: Mesa / XFree4 (update)

2000-07-05 Thread Michael Holt

Well, back to the drawing board! I just downloaded and compiled the
DRI-CVS and everything went o.k. except there doesn't seem to be support
for the 2.4 kernel yet (didn't leave me with the required mga.o after
compile) - at least with my Matrox G400. I updated to the 2.4.0-0.8mdk
kernel last night in preparation for dri because it wanted 2.3.51 - I
assumed that newer would be better :(

I guess the next step would be to download the 2.3.51 source and compile
(could someone save me some time and point me to a 2.3.51mdk.rpm
archive?)

Thanks, Mike

Hi. I have a k6. But rpm defaults to i586. This means it optimizes for
pentium, not k6. When compiling the kernel, I must make sure that I use
--target=k6 or else the -march=pentium in the RPM_OPT_FLAGS conflicts with
the -march=k6 in the kernel CFLAGS. Is this an rpmrc bug or is there
soemthing I can do to fix this?

[expert] Mandrake Forum News & Poll...

2000-07-05 Thread Gael Duval

Hello everybody,

several weeks ago we set up an experimental Mandrake web forum that
was intended to get as many ideas as possible about what the future
Linux-Mandrake systems should be. This forum was intended to have a
very short life (one week). As those discussions were a frank success,
this lead us to the idea that the users need to tell MandrakeSoft
their feelings about Mandrake. That's the reason why we have:

- reinstalled this system with a dedicated name
[http://forum.mandrakesoft.com]
- converted it into a general Mandrake news site where people can post
stories like in Slashdot, and post comments

I'm inviting you to take a look at it again, and especially to choose
a new name for it. Several names are already available, such as:
mandrakeforum.com or mymandrake.org. Which one do *you* prefer?

Vote now on: http://forum.mandrakesoft.com

Greets,

Gael.

PS Due to the recent new KDE2 beta packages that are available on the
same server, the forum can be slow sometimes.

map=/boot/map was specified in /boot
/boot/map exists and has not been altered by me

new vmlinuz copied over to boot and symlinked properly
new System.map copied to boot and symlinked properly
new initrd (ramdisk) created in /boot
/etc/lilo.conf was set up corresponding to /boot (I am almost sure)

What do you think?

I need the newer kernel so I can use the tdfx.o module!

[Cooker] A Cooker install problem

2000-07-05 Thread Richard Schiffelers

Hi All,

I am trying out Cooker. For that purpose i created a local copy of the
cooker files from ftp.ciril.fr (used fmirror). So far so good. I shared
this data out on my network with nfs (ro).

When i now try and install it on a clean machine from scratch using the
network.img floppy i run into problems when the installation of the
packages starts. On the first 8 packages being installed i get the error
mesage 'unable to read header of package ...'.

The packages affected are:

setup-2.1.9-13mdk
filesystem-1.3.5-2mdk
ldconfig-1.3.5-19mdk
glibc-2.1.3-7mdk
bdflush-1.5-15mdk
cracklib-2.7-11mdk
ctags-3.5.1-5mdk
e2fsprogs-1.18-5mdk

(I checked the rpm files and they seem to be ok)

After that the errormessage is 'warning: missing header at
/usr/bin/perl-install/pkgs.pm line 149.'.

On the graphical screen there is now the message of an error and
installation is halted. If i click ok on the error message i get back to
the package selection screen.

Anyone any clue ?

This may just be a permission problem or something simple, but it certainly can
bring a system to a halt in quick order unless it's caught in time. My
system lasted less than a day and then the partition was full. With no
floppy on the UltraSparc I don't know how I'd do a rescue. This means that it's
important for it to be correct in the default install and that's why I'm being
rather verbose. Hope it helps!

Let me know what to do with this one.
Much thanks!

I thought that it was related to the disk filling up, but I was just guessing.
If it happens again then I'll try to boot to runlevel 3 as you suggest. I
would like to split the /var partition off of the / partition. Any advice on
how to do that?

Unfortunately I deleted them so that I could get the machine working again.
What I could try is restarting the services and keeping an eye on those files.
If they show up and start growing again then I can kill the services and send
you part of the logs.

I assume that you meant lspci?
Here's the output.
[root@sparky httpd]# lspci
pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci
lspci: Cannot find any working access method.
[root@sparky httpd]#

Should I be trying something else or does that indicate that there are no PCI
devices?

One other thing here. The clock can't seem to keep the date and time
correctly. I don't know if this is just a low battery or if it's a software
issue, but I suspect it's software because I didn't notice it until I started
playing around with these betas. I'm going to try to keep a closer eye on when
it is that it loses time - it may be that it's only when it's turned off and if
that's the case then I suppose it may very well be the battery.

I'll restart those services and watch the logs. Let me know how to proceed
from the lspci thing.
Thanks.

[Cooker] bzip2 woes

2000-07-05 Thread Bryan Paxton

After upgrading to the latest bzip2 some whacky stuff happened : )

This error happened after trying to install a package via urpmi

hdlist2names: error in loading shared libraries: libbz2.so.0: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory
hdlist2names failed at /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia line 115.

so I did a ldconfig -v | grep libbz2.so.0

So I downgraded and again
ldconfig -v | grep libbz2
 libbz2.so.0 => libbz2.so.0.9.0
libbz2.so.0 => libbz2.so.0.9.0
libbz2.so.0 => libbz2.so.0.9.0
libbz2.so.0 => libbz2.so.0.9.0
libbz2.so.0 => libbz2.so.0.9.0

Ok all ok right ?

urpmi autoirpm
Failed dependencies: autoirpm-0.3-7mdk requires libbz2.so.0

So I then tried uninstalled urpmi && rm -rf /var/lib/urpmi && re-install urpmi
updated my list, same error as above...

So what could be going wrong, and why is this all centered around my bzip2
upgrade, bad spec file maybe ?

[Cooker] sftp, scp & ssh tunneling

2000-07-05 Thread Frank Meurer

FYI, maybe it is interesting for some of you:

Besides sftp there are more methods for secure file-transfer:
1) Using "scp" of the ssh-package.
2) Use tunneling with ssh (needs local ssh-client and
remote ssh-daemon).
I also use ssh-tunneling for a kind of "secure-pop".
Here's a sample .fetchmailrc:

poll mail via localhost port 1243 with proto pop3:
user my-login-name-remote
pass my-remote-pop-password
mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d my-login-name-local"
keep
preconnect "ssh -f -L 1243:139.6.1.1:110 139.6.1.1 sleep 10 /dev/null
2>&1";

have fun,
Frank

Any posiblity of sticking in a symlink for
resolv.conf in the man-pages RPM? I spent quite
a few minutes figuring out that "man resolver"
needs to be used rather than "man resolv.conf".

A simple "ln -s /usr/man/man5/resolver.5.bz2
/usr/man/man5/resolv.conf.5.bz2" would be
appreciated.

[Cooker] new kernels, dhcp, tokenring

2000-07-05 Thread Udo Weber

Hi cookers,

I have a Thinkpad 770X with Mandrake cooker always uptodate with the
latest available rpm's.
I need to use the pcmcia-tokenring from IBM.
In the past all works perfectly for me until kernel 2.2.15-04-mdk (from
Mandrake 7.1).
With the startpoint of 2.2.16 kernels the pcmcia did not work with the
ibmtr anymore
 - solution for me was: add install of the old kernel and all works
well.
Now since 2.2.17-kernels I allways get a kernel ups (crash) when the
ibmtr does an dhcp-request.
Now the circumvention with the old kernel also don't works anymore.
The tokenring does a dhcp request but when the initialisation is done,
no IP is available.
  The dhcp-request dies with:
No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
With Win... it works! (No HW-probs), I worked also befor the latst
dhcp-update.

I have also tryed the new kernel 2.2.17-06 (with pcmcia compiled by
myself because the pcmcia-files are missing) -> same result
(kernel-crash).

So I think there are some changes? or bugs? in the kernel/pcmcia since
2.2.15-04.

I also think something is wrong or changed with the last dhcp-update
(3.0b1pl15-1).
Do I have to do some add. config-work ?

Has anyone some suggestions how to get the TR working again with dhcp
and the new kernels ??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Udo

I'm uploading the fix.

hum. Maybe some device go sleeping and the kernel just can't wake it.
What've you made on your box just before the first hang (kernel upgrade, new
device, ...) ??

did magic keys work (ie altgr+sysprint+{s,u,b}) ?
and telnet

is it a 7.1 or a cooker related problem ?

maybe your hd is bogus and cannot properly wake up?
play with hdparm (hdparm -S 251 /dev/your_disk'll let him sleep only after
5 idle hours)

Re: [Cooker] installkernel woes

2000-07-05 Thread OS

Moreover kernel-2.2.17-0.6mdk.i586.rpm appears not to have any PCMCIA support !
pcmcia start results in three error messages such as
/lib/modules/2.2.17-0.6mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o no such file

[Cooker] Re: Mesa / XFree 4 (next questions)

2000-07-05 Thread Michael Holt

Hello again,
Ok, so far I've gotten rid of any Mesa and XFree 3.3.x rpms and
upgraded to XFree 4.01. I've also upgraded to the latest hackkernel
(2.4.0-0.8mdk) but when I try to run the mesa demos (did leave them
installed) I get the following:
gears: error in loading shared libraries: libglut.so.3: cannot open
shared object file: no such file or directory
I'm also missing libGLU.so.1 so I'm wondering if I should have kept the
Mesa rpms? Anyway, this is mostly an update of where I'm at. Tomorrow
I will download the cvs dri and see what that does.
