Try one of the following things (I do not know whether all points really
 work exactly as described here):

 - Run CUPS and LPD in parallel by letting CUPS as is and installing the
lpr and rhs-printfilters packages. Use "printerdrake -expert" or
"printerdrake -lpr". In this case the LPD printing commands are
 "lpr-lpd", "lpq-lpd", "lprm-lpd", and "lpc-lpd".

I succeded with this way (CUPS + LPD). Your hint "printerdrake -lpr" helped
me to build a seperate lpr-printer with the correspondend rhs-printfilter.

 - CUPS can emulate LPD, see http://localhost:631/sam.html or
 http://www.cups.org/sam.html (CUPS-LPD mini-daemon).

I did not succeed with the CUPS-MINI-daemon. Maybe I did not set up
correctly. But I have it working with the first way.

 - Run only LPD by removing CUPS, installing lpr and rhs-printfilters and
using "printerdrake -expert" or "printerdrake -lpr".

I did not try this, it would be the worst solution to my oppinion.

 - If you want to use the "printtool", it is in the contribs.

I have posted your problem on the Canon forum of linuxprinting.org. Here
is the answer of Grant Taylor:

Hmm. I've observe thee exact effects with my

then was a bad wire.

I'd suggest that he fiddle with tunelp first -
change to
interrupt-driven, or shorten the poll time, or
something like that.
This printer really should not suffer from any
load or cups-related
host problems like this seems to describe.

 Essentially I can't print anymore.
Never had this problems before with LPR.

Is it timing problem, the printer works fine on the other OS.

If you recommend replacing CUPS with LPR then how do I do that?.

Lots of CUPS problems to report with 7.2 and an HP 970Cxi printer
using the HP Deskjet 970C, Foomatic + cdj970 driver.

Worked well until I tried to print from Adobe Acrobat 4 (acroread) -
silence.

General Question: Why is not Adobe Acrobat installed as standard by
Mandrake?

Tried also to print from Mandrake's ps and pdf viewer - silence.

These all attempt to spool via lpr. I understood CUPS intercepted
all such attempts?

After this all CUPs became inaccesible, requiring a user name and
password to do anything, which it always rejected.

Problem disappeared after uninstalling all cups RPMs and reinstalling
them from the CDs.

[Cooker] WARNING: CUPS on Cooker

2000-11-14 Thread Till Kamppeter

Oi,

PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THE CURRENT COOKER AS YOUR ONLY OPERATING SYSTEM
WHEN YOU WANT TO PRINT!!!

As most of you already know, the current Cooker uses gcc 2.96 and new
standard libraries, so it is not binary-compatible to Linux Mandrake
7.2.

Unfortunately, CUPS does not compile in the new environment, and due to
some configuration issues which I have to fix for 7.2, I cannot fix the
compiling of CUPS soon.

Note that Cooker is intended to be a development and testing version of
Linux Mandrake and that it is not suitable as a production environment.

WE HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH GCC 2.96.

If you want to help us in the development of printing, please use
Mandrake 7.2. Naturally every hint to get CUPS compiled with gcc 2.96 is
welcome.

Oh yes it does. But you need to change the FontPath's for XFree86-4.n. Try
putting :
   FontPath "tcp/127.0.0.1:7102"
   FontPath "tcp/:7102"
into your XF86Config file.

(or should that be
   FontPath "inet/127.0.0.1:7101"
   FontPath "unix/:7101"
I can never remember which is for fonttastic and which is for xfstt !!! )

If you think it's a bit overkill having two lots of each defined, remove them

[Cooker] CUPS: Back in Cooker again!

2000-11-14 Thread Till Kamppeter

Oi,

with the help of Chmouel I got the CUPS package compiled under the new
GCC 2.96. The problem was a "-O2 -O3" (both at the same time!) defined
as compiler optimization options by the CUPS authors. This worked with
all former gcc's and the compilers of all commercial Unixes, gcc 2.96 is
the first having problems with this senseless setting. Because the
Makefiles of CUPS hide the compiler command line I didn't see it.

Now you can print out of the Cooker version again, and I hope that you
will comment on any problem and give many contributions to make the
printing system even better in the next release of Mandrake.

Paul, I'd sure like to hear their solution to this problem.

The solution is to get them to fix their braindead scripts (some of
them are even c shell scripts!). Their Word Perfect script (or one of them) is also
broken (even though Posix explicitly states that one may not assume
that uname returns any particular format, they rely on the kernel
version being a number (of course Mandrake appens mdk, so that breaks
that)). Anyway rpm -qp --scripts nameof.rpm will show you clearly that
their script is broken. Just install rpm -i --force --noscripts, and
then from /etc/rc.d/init.d copy into the runlevels
(e.g., /etc/rc.d/rc5.d) if you want to run on startup [remember you'll
have to rename the copied file in each runlevel to something like
S50fontastic].

[Cooker] BIG problem for KDE developers on Mandrake 7.2

2000-11-14 Thread Parodi Davide

I've noticed that kdbg-1.1.4-7mdk segfaults immediately after starting, do
you?

After a little bit investigation I've discovered that:
[root@pset40]# ldd /usr/bin/kdbg | grep qt
libqt.so.1 = /usr/lib/libqt.so.1 (0x404e3000)
libqt.so.2 = /usr/lib/libqt.so.2 (0x409df000)

That have no sense!
Specifically because kdbg spec file legacy impose use of kde2 and ,
consequently, qt2

On other and in /usr/lib there is libqt.so which is a symlink to
/usr/lib/libqt.so.1

Then I supposed the ld link order was wrong and swapping /usr/lib and
/usr/lib/qt2 positions in macro all_libraries in kdbg/Makefile solved the
problem.

Now I have a full functional kdbg-1.1.7beta1 KDE aware debugger.

But the problem remains: 1) installing kde1-compat-1.1.2 ld finds qt 1.1.2
shared object for first.
  2) Not installing can't compile old good kde1.1.2
apps
  3) Don't know how to impose different ordering for
libraries with autoconf automake stuff.

Anyway LM7.2 is great, thank you.

No. We talked about this before. DrakFont searches for Windows fonts, on your
windows partition, that's external. To include something inside a main package
would be a different thing. There are vraious problems, see:

(1) We do open source. This is the case with say, why don't we have applixware
in the main distro, why don't we have nvidia drivers, why don't we have lucent
modem drivers ...

(2) The license probably would't allow us to do that. We sell the LM product
for money too, I'm not sure if the license says that we can do that. In any
case the license for those DLLs suck. (IMHO).

Of course providing, say, libavifile is one thing, but the DLLs is another.

[Cooker] locale-probs after update with last glibc

2000-11-14 Thread Udo Weber

Hi folks,

after update of a 7.2 MDK with the last cooker-stuff (glibc, ...) I
always got
if the update-menu or other perl-stuff is called following error:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:

LC_ALL = (unset),
LC_MESSAGES = "en_US",
LC_TIME = "en_US",
LC_NUMERIC = "en_US",

LC_MONETARY = "en_US",
LC_COLLATE = "en_US",
LANG = "en"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

I know this was discussed in the past but I never saw a solution.
Somebody told that the local-stuff has to be rebuild but this never
happened.
In the last days nobody talked about this prob - silence - so maybe
there is a
circumvention or any other solution.

Maybe I missed something, if so, please tell me again what I have to do.

Thanks in advance for any help

I thought I was the only one getting these errors. Since I've seen no one
else mention this problem I thought there might have been a problem with
one of the packages I've installed.
Also, has anyone else been getting the occassional restorekdemimetypes
errors regarding scipts being too long? I've had this error now for about 4
weeks. It seems to be a perl error and it pops up whenever rpm runs
update-menus.
And finally ...
Is konqueror currently working at all?
When in KDE I cannot open anything which calls konqueror. I was getting a
protocol related error but now nothing. Anybody else getting this?
I've gone over to Gnome where things are working fine and I've been
looking forward to seeing some updates for KDE.
Although things are looking pretty good we seem to have hit a low ... Or is
it just my system?

no , is a priority but sometime you could not get something without some lost
, see you've got netscape , why ?
you couldn't do anything without it ?
konqueror use netscape plugin's , and is not perfect (yet).
to be honest , If you think opensource so powerfull to change mind of big
society like microsoft to enable people to made avaible (legaly) linux codec
I will be glad .
but I think it won't happen (not yet) .
the problem is that the only ways to use these codecs is to get them and play
them with the only open source project (that is present in contrib)
libavifiles .
I know why you won't do this :
netscape is too integrated in linux to put it out (yet) .
but if people will have possibility to play with avifiles format not avaible
in linux this will froze development of GPL one. (not good)
is 4 this reason that in my precedant mail I've changed my mind and tell that
I understand u know
and I won't use them anymore.

thanks and excuse me ,
I've not see this in this angle ;-)

[Cooker] How can I get rid of cups ? (my way)

2000-11-14 Thread Nora Etukudo

Hello.

Since I couldn't get good print quality with Cups and HP LaserJet 6L, I
had to get rid of Cups too, today.

I've removed

cups-1.1.4-3mdk.i586.rpm
cups-drivers-0.3.6-30mdk.i586.rpm

and then installed

control-panel-3.11-17mdk.i586.rpm
lpr-0.50-7mdk.i586.rpm
rhs-printfilters-1.76-3mdk.i586.rpm
printtool-3.44-3mdk.noarch.rpm

The 'printtool' rpm is stolen from Mandrake 7.1
Now my printing is ok and in good quality as before on Mandrake 6.1.

Liebe Grüße, Nora.

Super, both pages are excellent!

Simon, have you tried XF 4.0.1 and xf86cfg utility?
I encountered several problems re-installing XF 3.3.6 and decided to try Xf
4.0.1 (some time ago). xf86cfg, which is included with it, solved all
problems, my X started at 1024x768.
It also created very interesting ModeLine, see below.
Is it possible to put it in Monitor/Card database so next time [Compaq

On top of 1024x768, I have also 640x480 mode operational, but was not able to

LCD panel is 15" 1024x768, 800x600 works in Windows.

Re: [Cooker] How can I get rid of cups ? (my way)

2000-11-14 Thread Till Kamppeter

Once, you can find the printtool under the contribs, and second, I
cannot imagine why you get bad printing quality with your HP LaserJet
6L. All drivers which were available for LPD in 7.1 are also available
for CUPS under 7.2. And under CUPS you can even do a lot of fine-tuning
to raise the printing quality.

The drivers available for your printer are

   HP LaserJet 6 series, CUPS+GIMP-Print
   HP LaserJet 6, Foomatic + ljet4
   HP LaserJet 6, Foomatic + stp-4.0 (GIMP-Print)
   HP LaserJet 6L, Foomatic + ljet4

The "Foomatic + ljet4" entries are exactly the same driver as in
Mandrake 7.1. They should give exactly the same quality. Make sure that
you set the default options correctly to get a high quality. Either got
to http://localhost:631/printers/, click the "Configure Printer" button
at the entry of your HP LaserJet 6L or start "kups" and click with the
right button on your printer in the printer list of the main window. In
the pop-up menu choose "Configure Printer". Now you can put the
resolution to 600x600 dpi, try different dithering methods, and so on.
You can even set up options for every individual printout ("Options" in
"xpp", "Properties" in "qtcups".

   Till

P. S.: I have a LaserJet 1100 here and it works perfectly with CUPS.

This is only important for people who have downloaded the complete
Cooker and installed it. This Cooker is not binary-compatible to
Mandrake 7.2. So Cooker needs this new CUPS package and this package
does not work on 7.2 unless you do an "rpm --rebuild" on the source RPM.

One item I notice, if I cancel a job with CUPS WEB manager, the job will go
away but the printer, like the energiser bunny, keeps on going and going...

The printer has a certain amount of memory and it makes it empty.CUPS
does not send a reset signal to the printer.

Any ideas?

[Cooker] kernel-2.4.0

2000-11-14 Thread Chmouel Boudjnah

Hi,

To be ready to the upcoming kernel-2.4.0 i'll begin the switch soon,
there is a lot of issue who need to be resolved, i have beginned some
package if you want to test them you can download from :

https://kenobi.mandrakesoft.com/~chmou/kernel24/

it based on test11-pre4 (yes i know pre5 is out), let me know if you
have problems.

There is some architechtural changes, here i list them :

--=-=-=
alsa is merged into the kernel-??? (when ??? is -smp or normal or other
kernel package) as well as alsa-source is merged in kernel-source

kernel-headers doen't provide anymore a link to the source kernel but
the real headers file, we should recompile the glibc with the last
kernel-headers before releasing.

[Cooker] 7.2 Problem on Dell Laptop

2000-11-14 Thread Kevin Maciunas

I have installed 7.2 on My Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop and now have the
following strange behaviour:
Leave the machine alone and it hangs - hard! Need to powercycle.
Occasionally X crashes (V4).

The machine was previously running 7.1 + Cooker parts perfectly.

Any clues?

I've made sure apmd is running (I can close the lid, take the machine
home and then open the lid and it all comes back to life..). I'm very
suspicious that it's a bad interaction with V4 of XFree86 and the power
management. Prior to installing 7.1 I was running V4 from Cooker
without problems, however.

I've also tried to install 3.3.6 from the distribution (via DrakConf)
and this hangs the machine when it tries to test the configuration.

For completenes, the XFree86 log file from /var/log is attached. When X
crashes and re-starts it crashes with a Sig 11, if that is any help -
and always when I've just typed a character or moved the rodent. Smells
like an input device problem. This is a complete *virgin* install, too
- I haven't (yet) futzed with it.

Do you mean the BIOS settings to set the thing to automatically suspend

wanted my BIOS to take the laptop away! All this worked 100% under 7.0

I tried to try :-) I used the DrakConf tool and when it tried to test
the configuration, it just hung - screen went black, then the pale
whitish screen you get when it's testing the config but the little
dialog box (yes/no it works) never came.

I did an init 3 and left the thing alone and it's still running - really
does look like XFree4! I'll try a manual installation of 3.3.6 and see
what happens (but like I said, it *was* running a (June ish) Xfree4
under 7.1 fine).

[Cooker] KDE 2.x updates for 7.2

2000-11-14 Thread Christopher Molnar

Hello,

I have built a full set of kde 2 rpm's for 7.2 (NOT COOKER). Before I put
these into MandrakeUpdate (if we do) I would like to let some people test
them. I have made these available on one of my own servers at:

ftp://nebsllc.com/pub/KDE_UPDATE

The purpose of these updates is some rather large bug fixes and enhancements.
It pulls the code up to the level of the code in Cooker (post 2.0). These
RPM's will not fix all reported bugs and may contain new ones. Please do not
re-report bugs if things still aren't fixed. What I need to know is:

1. Are these valid updates? Do they offer you any improvements, look and
feel, functionality?

2. Is anything in them now broken, that wasn't broken before? In other words
do they break anything.

NOTE: Use these at your own risk! They work on my machines, have no idea what
will happen on yours. There is also a new dependency for kdepim on libical,
the rpm for this is in the same directory.

Thanks to Chmouel for his quick turn around on this.

I have manually installed configured the version of XFree3 on the 7.2
CD and it appears to cure the problem. It looks like the version of 4
which ships is in some way incompatable with the ATI Rage Mobility P
card in the Dell. Since I'm marking exams right now, I can do some
testing for you if you have something you want to try to fix it :-)

Also, belatedly, I have to report that the intall went almost perfectly
- the test of the X config worked OK but when it returned to the
installer, the video was messed up (the image on the LCD was broken and
rolling). I guess this should have warned me :-).

Overall, the 7.2 installer is a big improvement on the previous
incarnations (have done 6 machines so far with it).

RE: [Cooker] KDE 2.x updates for 7.2

2000-11-14 Thread Koma Yu

I've d/l all rpms and I use rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm to test. No error message. However
during actual installation, rpms prints ~20 lines of message, "package catalog not
listed in file index."

Is it because I am -Upgrading some rpms that are not installed (no previous version to
upgrade)?

Subject: [Cooker] KDE 2.x updates for 7.2

-Chris

 Sorry for an off-topic question.

The installer always halt at the middle of download. Do I need to be root to
install? I am using LM7.2

Have some trouble installing kdegames. Get this error
 [root@root]# rpm -Fvh kdegames-2.0-6mdk.i586.rpm
 error: failed dependencies:
 libkdegames.so.1 is needed by kdegames-2.0-6mdk

Have no installation-trouble with the others(not that they are all installed)

[Cooker] rpm and wv problems in 7.2

2000-11-14 Thread Mattias Eriksson

Hi

I have big problems with LM7.2, I was about to upgrade gnome to the
official helix-gnome to install evolution. However this dont work for me,
the problems seems to be in rpm. It just seems to fail during both upgrade
and removal of packages. I have tried from a X environment but also from
a console. Both attempts failing, the X environment chrashed for me once,
the other times rpm just quits with the message 'Killed'.

The wv package I have problem with wvText, it doesn't give the correct output.
wvHtml however does give a good output, I also cant find wvLatex, wvPs and
wvDvi. This might just be an old version, I haven't looked that close.

But please help me with the rpm problem!!!

Info:
Pentium 133
Mem 80M
Clean installation of LM7.2 (Hand picked the packages one by one)

well that should be all of interest...
