Re: [Cooker] Readonly NTFS5 partitions?
Mandrake 8.0 and Cooker both have support for NTFS5 (NTFS under Win2k, and 'Whistler'). simply type the 'mount' command in reguard to which drive AND partition contains the NTFS volume Example: mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/disk (Will mount the secondary/master hard drive's first available partition) DO NOT ENTER FILE SYSTEM TYPES in the mount command. Use the straight mount request, and the kernel will autodetect the revision of NTFS used on that volume. NOTES; Linux doesn't support Windows' "Dynamic Volume's". Such as simple dynamic volumes, striped and mirrored volumes, etc. Confer with the Microsoft "help" in reguard to the definitions of "Dynamic Volumes", "striping" and "mirroring". After this I burned the CD's and updated MDK 7.2 -> 8.0. Unfortunately the upgrade didn't go well either. I had some serious problems during the updating process and after installation the system didn't even boot. Here are the most serious problems: * mkbootdisk failed (unresolved, but maybe something to do with the next one) * The installation of bootloader failed because of error while loading shared library: /lib/libsafe.so.1.3. For some reason it was not removed from /etc/ld.so.preload * My RivaTNT was detected as Riva128. After I had corrected the settings manually and tested them I got following error: the graphics card does not like X in framebuffer. (XFree 4.0.3) * After rebooting the system hanged up with 2.4.3 (VFS panic).. The problem arises from ReiserFS (I think it has something to do with the reiserfsprogs, I'll try to resolve this). With 2.2.19 the system booted. * With the 2.2.19 the kernel booted but the system hanged up in the init: error while loading shared library: /lib/libsafe.so.1.3. Removing that from the /etc/ld.so.preload did the trick. * Gnome didn't work propertly until I deleted .gnome*/ (and removed the helix-gnome packages). * dhcpd was started at the boot time, LM Control Center said that it was not even running. * rpmdrake doesn't show other packages than those which come with Mandrake. So you can't remove for example helix rpm's with it. There is also some other issues to be solved, but I'll try to resolve them before I brother you with them. Regards, Matias

FROM: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/index.php Mandrake 8.0: Fixing ugly fonts in KDE ( Mandrake) Posted by tom on Wednesday, April 25 @ 09:18:45 PDT - (513 reads) The default font settings in the 8.0 KDE are sure to give you some serious headaches. I fixed three settings to make them look ok again: In '/etc/X11/fs/config': switch the positions of these lines (as 'root'): /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled, In KDE's Control Center: 'LookNFeel' - 'Fonts' change the setting for 'Fixed Fonts' from 'courier' to 'lucidatypewriter' Do the same in the 'WebBrowsing' - 'Konqueror Browser' - Appearance' module. That should do (well, it did here ;-)). Of course, installing the standard Windows fonts using DrakFont helps, too. Re: [Cooker] Corrupted fonts depending on installation stage!:
Sorry for replying to myself, but I just solved (sort of) one of the problems. On Fri, 27 Apr 2001, I wrote: > It seems there are at least two problems with the fonts that add up > to the uglyness: > - Type 1 rendering is far worse than it used to be. Running 'xset +fp > /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1' mostly reproduces the problems on a > Mandrake 7.2 system, but the fonts still don't look /that/ bad. This problem is caused by an actual bug in the type 1 font loading. When compiling XFree86 (tested 4.0.2, 4.0.3 and 4.0.99) with gcc-2.96-0.48mdk, you have to give the flag '-fno-force-mem' in RPM_OPT_FLAGS. No problems with gcc-2.95.2 or egcs-1.1.2-44mdk. The problem is XFree86-4.0.3/xc/lib/fonts/Type1/type1.c, unfortunately I could not localize it any more to fix the source itself. The source file makes heavy use of inlining and macros, so I would not completely outrule a compiler bug related to that. You can see the effects of this on http://users.evitech.fi/~arndb/cooker-type1-fonts/ . Note that it still looks kind of ugly even in the fixed version, but that is just because I used the URW-fonts for demonstration purpose. At least it now gets readable... There is also the working libtype1.a module, but the version that came with Mandrake 7.2 has exactly the same effect, since it was compiled with gcc-2.95.2 which did not produce this bug. The module should work as a drop-in replacement for any of the versions I tested, including the one from Mandrake 8.0. Arnd <><
[Cooker] Installing a larger number of fonts with Drakfont takes forever
Hello. I've just used Drakfont for the first time, since I wanted to install some Windows fonts. In particular, I wanted to install about 1.000 TTF font files. I checked that it should check thouroughly. Well, this takes forever! Right now it spend about 1 hour, and it is still going. Watching the "error messages" fly by on the console, it looks like it's scanning the whole directory over and over again - it appears as if it does this for each single font. Is there a way that the whole check could only be done once at the end, or that not the whole font directory is checked, but only the font file which is going to be installed? I imagine this would speed up the process enomoursly. You are taking about Ximian GNOME, aren't you.. Blame Ximian, not us.. I've sent them patches to add support for our menu system.. You should try 8.0 : we have integrated our menu system in "Mandrake menu" and we keep GNOME menu separate, so people who don't like our menu can have GNOME menu.. -- Frédéric Crozat MandrakeSoft

I was experimenting with different options yesterday to find a fix and I appearantly found it but now I can not get back to the broken state to reproduce what I have done. I also reinstalled font packages during the process and once put a (superfluent) 'Load = "bitmap"' in XF86Config. It seems there are at least two problems with the fonts that add up to the uglyness: - Type 1 rendering is far worse than it used to be. Running 'xset +fp /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1' mostly reproduces the problems on a Mandrake 7.2 system, but the fonts still don't look /that/ bad. - In some configurations, fonts fail to get loaded. My problem was that I could no longer load "-adobe-helvetica-*" (even though 'fslsfonts -u' showed it) in some apps. It would sometime get replaced by 'courier' and sometimes by "-urw-helvetica-*', triggering the first problem! Arnd <><
Re: [Cooker] xawtv non functional
Does the card get detected correctly as WinTVGo? I had to put 'options bttv card=10' manually in /etc/modules.conf some time ago for my WinTV Go, though I don't remember if I got similar errors or others. I also had to put 'Load "v4l"' in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 of my G400 card. Arnd <>< On Thu, 26 Apr 2001, Charles A. Shirley wrote: > Hello Folks!, > I'm having trouble getting xawtv to function. Re: [Cooker] Ximian GNOME 1.4 integration ?
Please integrate Gnome 1.4 and mandrake unified menus. I just installed Gnome 1.4 on my 7.2 installation and it is nice except for the menus. Even though I can call up the unified menu, it lost all icons that were not in /usr/share/pixmaps... how irritating, plus I am not sure if some of the new programs made it to the unified menu. I think it would be great if you could have an add on script within rpmdrake that would parse rpm's for menu info and apply it to the unified menu. A kind of mdk-ification of standard rpm's. --- Steve Fox <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On 25 Apr 2001 17:07:03 +0100, Michèl Alexandre > Salim wrote: > > Am surprised nobody posts this before.. Re: [Cooker] Fonts Fine but what happened to MC??
The problem with mc in antialiased 'Konsole' is one of the reasons why antialiasing is switched off by default. The only workaround is to use xterm for mc. But yes, switching antialiasing on fixes the other font problems with KDE, because the (somewhat broken) Type 1 renderer is then replaced by FreeType. You will of course still have problems with other apps like netscape. [Cooker] Quesion about db1 and zlib packages on Mandrake 8.0
Title: ¶ê§Î¹Ï Dear : I have used linux on Redhat6.2 and 7.0 for a while. But I am new to use Mandrake 8.0, I am happy to use Mandrake 8.0. I have tried successfully installed mysql-3.23.36 + openssl-0.9.6 + mod_ssl-2.8.1-1.3.19 + php4.0.4pl1 on Redhat 6.2 But I got some errors when applying those on Mandrake8.0. Here is the installation steps and the messages on Mandrake: # (1) install mysql, suppose now on the mysql path ./configure make make install scripts/mysql_install_db /usr/local/share/mysql/mysql.server start # It works, and I can use Mysql database # (2) install openssl, suppose now on the openssl path sh config \ -fPIC \ no-idea make make test # It works # (3) install modssl, suppose now on the modssl path ./configure \ --with-apache=../apache_1.3.19 \ --with-crt=... --with-key=... # It works # (4) install apache, suppose now on the apache path SSL_BASE=../openssl-0.9.6 \ ./configure \ --prefix=/usr/local/apache \ --enable-module=most \ --enable-shared=max \ --enable-module=ssl \ --enable-shared=ssl make The screen shows that I got some errors /usr/local/apache_1.3.19/src/modules/standard/mod_auth_dbm.c:85:22: db1/ndbm.h : No such file or directory I found that when I installed Mandrake 8.0, it doesn't create the directory /usr/include/db1, so it gets an error while trying to read /usr/include/db1/ndbm.h file. As I checked the rpm packages installed by rpm -qa. I noticed that only db1-1.85-4mdk installed, and I found that the orginal Mandrake8.0 cdroms contains db1-devel-1.85-4mdk package, so I try rpm -Uvh db1-devel-1.85-4mdk.i586.rpm It successfully create /usr/include/db1/ directory. And I can configure and install apache successfully. Another problem arises when I tried to configure and install PHP4.04pl1( I skipped some steps to install gd and libxml here), the php configure is: ./configure \ --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \ --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/apache/conf \ --enable-versioning \ --with-mysql \ --with-ftp \ --with-dom =/usr/local/libxml2-2.2.12/.libs \ --with-gd \ --with-pdflib=/usr/local \ --with-zlib \ --with-png \ --with-xml \ --enable-debug=no \ --enable-magic-quotes \ --enable-memory-limit=yes \ --enable-track-vars It shows some error that libz is not installed. So similay I found zlib1-devel-1.1.3-15mdk package is not installed. That is: rpm -Uvh zlib1-devel-1.1.3-15mdk.i686.rpm Then run the confiugre step above: But error still occurs: requires zlib>=1.0.9 It confuses me. I tried http://rpm.find.net , and search zlib. I downloaded zlib-1.1.3-15mdk.src.rpm rpm --rebuild zlib-1.1.3-15mdk.src.rpm Finally configure php, it works. Then: make, make install All works. Is there any better way? Regards Robin

I have noticed that fonts are a lot hard to read in the KDE terminal when AA is turned on. I have to use the other rxvt terminal to get readable text. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of michael > Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 10:38 PM > To: cooker > Subject: [Cooker] Fonts Fine but what happened to MC?? > > > I turned on anti-aliasing earlier and my fonts are fine although somewhat > brighter and bolder than before. [Cooker] Corrupted fonts depending on installation stage!
Hi all. I'm reading that many people has trouble with font in mandrake-8.0, and I'm having problems too. What I noticed is that these problems disappear if I install "default" packages, but they sometimes come back if 1. I do not install KDE 2. I install some more packages during installation Instead, it seems there's no problem if I perform a default installation and then (later!) I install the needed RPM in a second time. If fonts are corrupted anyway, it seems to be a non-reversible process :( They stay corrupted even if I uninstall packages. Claudio -- Nothing's as simple as it seems...
