Fred, this and the Galeon snapshot you released today are dated 2002.
Quit living in the past! ;)

Oops, you're right.. I have some trouble to sync with 2003 :

Anyway, galeon will soon be released as 1.3.2 (tonight..)

I'll fix gabber snapshot date :)

Yeah, there were a lot of bugs in the previous versions, and RedHat
jumped too quick.

Apache 2.0.44 and PHP 4.3.0+CVS patches is the first version that works
correctly. That's why it took so long for me to move it from contribs to
cooker.

Irony is some people think Mandrake ships bleeding-edge packages that

[Cooker] Realtek RTL8029(AS) doesn't work

2003-02-15 Thread utuhiro
I use Realtek RTL8029(AS) ethernet board and I cannot connect to the internet.
It works fine on mdk9.0, but it doesn't work on the latest cooker.

I did drakconnect with:
 kernel-2.4.21.0.pre4.6mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm (latest cooker kernel)
 kernel-2.4.19.16mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm (mdk9.0 kernel)
 kernel-2.4.19.24mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm (mdk9.0 latest update)
but no success.

then I copied mdk9.0's /etc/rc.d/init.d/network to mdk9.1's one,
but it doesn't work.

I added acpi=off to /etc/lilo.conf but no success.

Does your RTL8029(AS) work well on the latest cooker?
Can it get the ADSL connection?
If you know something about this, please post to:

or reply to this mail.

# Luis, thank you for your quick and kind reply.

Ran the install of the products I've attached the output once the
install began. A number of packages had signatures problems. And don't
think the install scripts for mod_ssl ran the way you want. I've had
this same problem with scripts inside rpms. RPM just merrily goes on
it's way and rushes to the finish wait states user input and sleep
statements be danged. I attached the relevant portion of the install (I
left out the download part.) Hope this helps.

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=29880atid=397599

Regarding requirements, sure I could make 100 sub packages each requiring
exactly what's needed, but I'm lazy. Nagios is meant to be used as a Systems
Management Node, and this node needs a lot of tools. You would be surprised if
you ever had fiddled with CA Unicenter TNG.

Not only that, but the fact that they shipped a CVS snapshot of glibc2.3
also gave problems, such as:
1)Issues with developing for mysql
2)Broken nss (in other words, winbind is unuseable on larger domains)

But, I don't consider Redhat material for a samba server anyway ...

[Cooker] 1 question about suspend scripts

2003-02-15 Thread Quel Qun
Hi,

I tried yesterday but it failed. Then I realized my swap partition is
smaller than my RAM. Shouldn't the suspend refuse to work in that case,
if that's the reason why it failed?

After it failed, I tried to reboot, but had to use mkswap to be able to
use the swap partition again.

One last thing. Now that apmd is going away, will there be a day when we
can remove it without breaking the dependency on kdeutils?

Sorry to jump in here, but please don't make statements like this as fact.
msec doesn't make things impossible, it only enforces what you have told
it to enforce. Either change security levels or configure it. It may take
a few minutes to setup and a little more discipline, but don't blame msec
... it is a great tool if you spend a little time on it. Use drakperm and
 drakesec to customise.

msec is a nice tool - for sys admins. For the average user it's nothing
more than a pain in the ass. My kids want to create videos, not mess
with config scripts. And they shouldn't have to - but with msec
installed one of them needed to learn enough to tell msec to stop
disabling access to firewire devices so they could use dvgrab and kino.
By default it only let root use those tools (a stupid default, I know,
but a great example of why msec sucks). Their first attempts to change
things were undone by msec - even though the changes were made as root.
A definite BAD THING. There should be NO, NONE, ZIP, ZILCH, ZERO,
operations performed by default that override root actions. If root
does something stupid, root should pay the price. The default tools'
config should NOT second-guess. At MOST they should issue warnings or
mails.
Personally, I think msec requires too much education of users to be of
any value as a default tool. Not being a sys admin I have no idea if it
helps them in any way ( I write software - I rarely use it :)

(I hope the reason for quoting of root is self-evident. :)

Except for one rule (/home/* 711, which makes life difficult if you put

I agree. But remember that linux is many things to many people. Many
reasons for people looking at linux are improvied security. Ease of use
and security are always a compromise.

IMHO, if msec in level 3 could break any software, it is the software that
is broken.

The problem was and is - msec changes things root has changed. That is
absolutely always wrong. There is no exception.

Then change security levels. It is good that msec does this, why should
msec not reset permissions on /etc/ to be write-only for root? Would you
want someone to leave /etc/passwd world-writeable by mistake?

But I cannot accept that msec is at fault, unless someone provides

When the extractible disk is not present /sbin/lilo would fail.
So I had to remove this line and /sbin/lilo ran just fine.

Hard to decide. My opinion has always been that if you mess with things
you know nothing about you live with the results. From being on #mandrake
on irc.freenode.net I've seen that I may be a little too strict - most
newbies mess with things they know nothing about and then blame linux that

Since I urpme msec since shortly after it was invented, I do not know if
it has matured to a usable state. The kids had to mess with it to make the
ONLY DV apps that exist work (buggy or not - they're all there is) for
users. That makes it bad. Users should never be hampered in doing
ordinary tasks by a security tool.

Actually, that is my one issue with msec, it may have been addressed

That is my one issue with it - and I don't know if it has been addressed,

Update on KT400 motherboard. The new kernels are detecting the BIOS in the
Soyo Dragon Ultra (KT400) and setting the boot parameters noapic and acpi=off
when setting up LILO. Hpwever, the installation kernel is not detecting this and no
network is available when doing a network install with network.img. Booting the
kenel on the network.img with noapic and acpi=off solves this problem.

This at least should be addressed in the README if the kernel can not be made
aware of these chisets.

Remember to always run lilo (as root) after editing lilo.conf. Changes
aren't applied until you do this.

I've already done it.
I don't think it's a kernel problem, because
RTL8029(AS) works well on the kernel-2.4.19.16mdk-1-1mdk in mdk9.0.
It works fine without extra kernel settings in mdk9.0.

2003-02-15 Thread Jay DeKing
Not sure what you mean by non-tree leaves, but glad to have some
confirmation of the rpmdrake hangs.

On another note, every package I update with urpmi recently has been reported
as having bad signatures. None of these are Contribs - all standard Cooker.

And, yesterday I found that urpmi was telling me that everything was already
install, though it obviously wasn't when I went to the mirror that I
reference. I had run urpmi.update already (and did it again after getting
that message), and the synthesis.hdlist.cz was the newest file in the mirror
(so that wasn't out-of-sync either).

I'll try again today when I get home from work.

Thanks
Jay

 Jay DeKing [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Yes, I've had this problem for at least two versions - so bad, in fact,
that I've been doing all of my updates from the command line via urpmi. I
open Konqueror on my favorite mirror and sort by date, rpm -q for the
newest packages to see if I need to update them, and run urpmi for them
  if necessary.

As for me, it seems that it happens when non tree leaves are
selected. Selecting another thing seems to workaround.

rpmdrake, on the other hand, hangs completely (not every time, but if not
on the first package group, soon thereafter) if I use it to install
updates. It appears to install the software, but does not return the All
  packages were installed successfully dialog.

I think I had seen that at the end of normal rpmdrake too.

Running gps or ps -ef shows that grpmi (called by rpmdrake) has zombied.
Worse, it won't respond to a hangup signal and can't be killed, except by
  sending rpmdrake a hangup signal.

The package being installed when the hangup occurs *appears* to have gone
in successfully, but without confirmation via completion of the rpmdrake
process, how can I be certain? rpm -qa packagename says so, but I
doubt that this checks every facet of the new software. What if something
is missing from some critical packages?

 rpm -V?

I've checked all the dependencies of rpmdrake and grpmi and made sure
  that they were updated.

Yes, the problem is still there. I've yet to investigate try to
 fix or work-around the problem.

Thursday, James Sparenberg mused:

 Mike,
You may be on to something there. I had a friend who's daughter was
looking for win98 CD so that here kids could run some educational games
they just bought. Seems that they were all DOS based (looked to be
about DOS 4 by the quality of graphics.) and wouldn't run right on XP or
2000 she had at home. Education is an area sorely missing in the
 industry.

Oh and I might mention squeak here. They actually have a programing IDE
type interface aimed at 5 year olds.

 James

Yeah, I've got some of those games and since I've got a couple of boxes
hooked to a kvm, I don't mind having one of the boxes load win98 on at
least one partition. I just hate to get the kids used to using that
stupidware.
As far as the IDE, all I can say is wow. I'm not sure if I'm quite
ready for my kids to be *that* advanced! :-)

Well, chances of getting it fixed are better if you can try some more
experiments. Have you tried updating to the latest version of initscripts?
I know the ne2k-pci driver doesn't support ifplugd, so it may have been
affected. Also, you could try installing the initscripts from 9.0.

Are you using dhcp?

What does 'ifstatus -v' tell you?

A feature freeze does not guarantee fewer bugs, neither does squashing of
all known bugs. To reduce the errata, we need to try and find all the
potential bugs first ... so a feature freeze will help if it encourages
more people to test. But I guess that is what the idea of the RCs are.

Of course, we probably need to try to ensure that squashing of known bugs
does occur, so maybe Warly will post a bug summary sometime so we know how
many uncofirmed bugs there are, how many confirmed but unaddressed bugs
there are etc.

Also, just banging on all the software needs to be done, both by those who
know it, and those who do not ...

[Cooker] ACPI problem (Gigabyte GA-7IXEH)

2003-02-15 Thread Adam Williamson
When we first switched to ACPI, it wouldn't work on my desktop at all,
so I switched back to APM. Thought I'd give it another try with the
newest kernel (-6mdk). Now it boots, but it doesn't seem to power up the
USB bus properly. That is, my M$oft Intellimouse Optical normally turns
itself on (you can tell from the snazzy red light) quite early in boot
up (well, when it does the USB stuff :). With ACPI, it doesn't turn
itself on, it just sits there looking cold and dead, the poor little
thing.

This is a Gigabyte GA-7IXEH motherboard (KT133E chipset). Is this known?
Is there anything the MDK guys can do about it, or should I report it

logdrake segfault with the following output:

# logdrake
hostname: Unknown host
Can't call method set_sensitive on an undefined value at
/usr/lib/libDrakX/ugtk2.pm line 74.

OR the following output:
# logdrake

Is gtk2-perl missing Gtk2::TextView::get_length ?

If you open the Save as window by clicking on the Valid button, and choose
Cancel or Apply (with a valid file name).

I think a cleanup button should be a good idea, because all queries are appended
in the output window.

Have you tried updating to the latest version of initscripts?
Yes. I use initscripts-7.06-4mdk.i586.rpm.

Also, you could try installing the initscripts from 9.0.
It's dangerous..but I did it.
I can't get the connection.

What does 'ifstatus -v' tell you?
(after downgrade initscripts from 9.0)
[root@localhost]# ifstatus -v

SIOGGMIIPHY failed (Operation not supported)
SIOCDEVPRIVATE failed (Operation not supported)
eth1:

SIOCDEVPRIVATE failed (No such device)
-snip-
eth9:
SIOCETHTOOL failed (No such device)
SIOGGMIIPHY failed (No such device)
SIOCDEVPRIVATE failed (No such device)

mmm..something goes wrong.
I don't use my machine without the internet connection.
I'll change the distro soon, and I'll test the next beta(maybe RC1).
Thank you so much, Buchan!

Well, chances of getting it fixed are better if you can try some more

*snip* it's not a problem with mandrake, it's a problem with the kernel. I
also had problems with a different network card similarly. acpi=off in
lilo.conf worked on the newer kernels.

Oh, and the reason it worked in 9.0 is because the 2.4.19 kernel that ships

 I don't think it's a kernel problem, because

It has been over a week since any change has been made to mdkkdm. You still
do not have the option of typing in the username of a hidden user, and the buttons
all move their positions slightly when switching from one screen to another. All in
all I think that these are necessary adjustments that must be made. Please clean
this thing up or take it out.

Also, when clicking the reboot button, the system asks for confirmation and then
does not reboot.

security

A good solution would probably be:

1) A mdkkdm package (that can be installed by default) that has this new kdm in it
(although, I surely hope that it is improved before it's used anywhere!)

2) The original unmodified (but it can be branded, as usual--we have no problem with
that) kdm being installed by kdebase, and used if mdkkdm is not installed.

Others have made plenty of comments in the cooker ML and can add comments here
as appropriate.

this RPM doesn't use the daemon command, but directly
executes /sbin/apcupsd, which must detach from stdin
on startup. I've not checked the source to confirm
this.

Another user on the apcupsd mailing lists reports the
same on RedHat.

in the nagios-plugins, then we must install them first, otherwise is not usable

[Cooker] [Bug 1668] [drakconf] New: mcc starts without root password

   Product: drakconf

Summary: mcc starts without root password
   Version: 9.0-6.1mdk
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2

ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I run mcc on a remote machine for package update.
These are the commands I run:

1. ssh remote-machine -l non-root-username

2. After login, I run mcc from commandline

3. It asks for root passwd. So far so good

4. mcc starts up after root passwd is given. I quit mcc.

5. Run mcc from commandline again. This time it starts without asking for root
passwd !!
Why ?

6. I quit mcc, logout of the remote machine.

7. Immediately, repeat steps 1 and 2. Mcc starts without asking for root passwd !!

Is there a timer associated with the root passwd in the sense that once u
authenticate, u have
tokens that last for the next 2 minutes ? If that is true, why are these tokens
valid even after
the remote ssh connection has ended ? If not true, then its a severe security bug.

If the non-root user who was issued these tokens logs out, the tokens must also
vanish.

I used the mail interface to resolve this bug, and I didn't ask it to
change the assigned, but as Buchan has reported numerous times, it just
does it on its own.

I can't see through the web interface how to change it back (although it
shouldn't matter for this one in particular as I don't believe this bug
to be valid).

Anyway, hopefully this could be fixed.

by booting with linux acpi=off (type F1 at the very first

Hi,
When I tried testing Beta 3's setup again yesterday, mostly because I
wanted a development partition that I could update to Cooker, I noticed an
issue. I didn't install foomatic initially, and because of this, when I got to the
stage to use PrinterDrake, printer setup just failed complaining that it didn't
exist! IIRC, previous versions of PrinterDrake would have installed the
needed packages to continue.

Also, once I finished installing and _updated_to_cooker_, I decided to try
running PrinterDrake again, before installing foomatic manually. Running it
from MCC caused it to continually display the little loading animation (with
the printer fading in and out) without showing any indication of the problem
(or a solution to the problem, for that matter).

I guess this isn't exactly a bug, but I was wondering why, since you have a
nice GUI for adding entries to LILO during setup, there is no way to do so
using Drakeboot after setup? Sometimes I'll realize after I've finished that I
need to add an entry, and while I don't mind going into lilo.conf to do so,
that would stump many people. As long as you already have the code, why
not make it work even when you using drakeboot via MCC?

(usermode) that does grab the focus exclusively. I think that's
normal (well, wanted) operation because of the security issue.
When you're in that dialog, you also can't switch desktop with
key shortcuts, etc. Gnome probably receives absolutely no key
input events (to circumvent sniffing probably).

Product: drakxtools-newt
  Component: drakxtools-newt
Summary: drakconnect problems
Version: 9.1-0.26mdk
   Platform: PC
 OS/Version: All
 Status: UNCONFIRMED
   Severity: normal
   Priority: P2
 AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When I click on expert mode in drakconnect, then click on configure local area
 network, drakconnect exits.

9.1-0.27mdk fixes that.

Also after completion of wizard and attempting to save changes, drakconnect
hangs on trying to restart the network.

Here is what i have :

 /ChangeLog/1.779/Sat Feb 8 22:41:49 2003//

I've changed something in the code which should workaround the
problem. Please try to test the upcoming RC1 (or any installation
program with a VERSION = 1.783) and try to do the same things,
and re-open this bug if that was not really fixed. Thanks!

Some Speedtouch modems do not take the microcode every time. If Internet is
enabled on boot in Mandrake this makes the boot up sequence hang.

There is a work-around included in the new 1.1 version on Sourceforge to address
this problem. It only affects a few users, but we would be most grateful :-)

I was just wondering what package this new theme for KDE and GTK is in? I
wanted to see what it looks like, but the only package I can find is the
Galaxy welcome message/program launcher tool. (I'm running Beta 3 updated to
Cooker)

  Thanks,
